The Big Show dropped/rested

Australia batting first

Australia

1. Warner
2. Finch
3. Watson
4. Bailey*
5. Smith
6. Marsh
7. Wade+
8. Starc
9. Richardson
10. Doherty
11. Hazlewood

Smith should be higher up in the order

South Africa

1. Amla
2. de Kock+
3. du Plessis
4. Behardien
5. de Villiers*
6. Rossouw
7. Miller
8. Philander
9. Steyn
10. Morkel
11. Tahir

Behardien is not befitting a team like South Africa. Should just play Parnell so they atleast have a proper fifth bowler.

SA batting should make mincemeat of that bowling attack in Canberra (Hazelwood aside)

Warner, Finch and Watson is one deadly top-order. Best in the world at the moment.

Finch is a pub cricketer at best

Zero footwork. Just a strong bloke with a good eye

Finch never seems to learn, from what i've seen of him, he always gets out hitting it at catch-able height early on in his innings.

Australian Sehwag then? A great find.

That's a massive insult to Sehwag.

Finch will be phased out from the Australian team sooner rather than later and won't be missed.

We all talk about how fast bowlers have disappeared in tests, but so have true medium pacers. Johnson and Behardien are the last of their respective kinds.

I laughed last match.

Brayshaw "The only knock on Finch is that he has a habit of getting caught in the ring"

I mean even it was the only knock on Finch, getting caught in the ring often enough that it's a habit is a disgrace.

Averaging 35 at a good SR means that he'll be the first choice opener for the WC atleast. I don't see any Gilchrist's that could replace him.

Take out Scotland and the occasional fluke.

Average drops.

I mean Watto averages 45 at a strike rate of 90 as an opener...

Also like Finch's name. Finch.

There should be an Aussie cricketer called Budgie, he would instantly be among my favourites.

Yeah but if Watson opens, who will bat at #3? If Smith comes up then there is a hole in the middle order and so forth.

Smith at 3 - where he belongs, Bailey at 4, Marsh at 5, Maxwell at 6.

Alternatively even if Clarke misses all of Hughes, Shaun Marsh, White and Voges and even Khawaja are better players than Finch

Finch seems to have the Shehzad problem. Finds the rope easily enough but can't rotate the strike too well.

Finch is just not equipped to succeed in difficult situations

I don't see how you can drop Finch and play Maxwell.

Maxwell is? Atleast as an opener, he can make use of the PP and get some quick runs. Maxwell coming in at #6 during a pressure situation is going to end badly.

Not being able to rotate the strike is an indication of a substandard player.

Though I think Shehzad will improve that part of his game

Maxwell is a slogger, he is there to slog 30 off 19 balls and bowl a few overs of non threatening off spin.

Quick someone score 270 just to annoy India

I think double centuries in ODIs have been patented by the BCCI. Non-Indians can't score them.

Not really. Misbah has that problem too.

Some players can rotate the strike easily but can't score boundaries, other players are the opposite.

Finch looking good here and silencing his haters.

I have no idea why I'm defending him though.

He's not silencing anyone

36 at a strike rate in the 60s on a flat wicket where he is unable to rotate the strike

An inability to rotate the strikes suggesting that you can only hit bad balls.

Smith averages just 25 after 40 odd matches. That is pretty poor since his SR isn't great either.

Irrelevant.

Smith's a vastly superior player now to when he played those matches (back in 2010-2012) playing the role Maxwell does now.

Yup, Finch ain't going anywhere.

Deal with it, boys.

That explains it. Should be averaging in the 40's.

Lol

He'll probably make the world cup and unfortunately be a liability for us but he'll be out of the team by the time he is 30.

I think he'll do decently. Another intriguing sub-plot to watch out for.

Will probably beat up on Afghanistan and Scotland to drag his average for the cup up to 40 with a good strikerate

And the Lankans. Add a few quick runs against the stronger opposition and he'll have a better WC than several other batsmen.

Averages 10 against Sri Lanka (all matches in Australia)
And 17 against the Windies (all matches in Australia)

I've never seen Amla bowl before. Hoping to see that in this series.

Use the Smith argument for him too. He's a changed player now, playing more sensibly.

So sensibly that even James Brayshaw notices that he gets out caught in the ring way too often.

The powerplay always helps the bowlers in Australia

Don't know why SA still playing with their main bowlers. Should give the rookies a run. This series doesn't even matter.

Time for Watson to support Finch. Just keep your bat in front your pad, big guy.

I think technically you can declare in an ODI - some uber nerd on here should be able to answer that.

Pakistan should do that ASAP. We're going to break the world record for breaking world records.
