Chittagong: The Australian cricket team has been shaken by an incident following play on day one in Chittagong in which a projectile was thrown at the team's bus as it returned to the Australian contingent's hotel.

No players or officials were hurt in the incident, which Cricket Australia suspect was caused by a small rock or stone thrown by a child. Only minor damage was caused to the bus, but security has been beefed up around the team on Tuesday as a result of the incident.

CA's head of security Sean Carroll – who is with the team in Chittagong – explained what happened.

"En route back to the hotel last night a window on the Australian team bus was broken. No one was injured in the incident," Carroll said on Tuesday.

"Team security personnel are currently in discussion with local authorities while they investigate the cause, which is believed to have come from a small rock or stone.

"Bangladesh authorities are taking the incident seriously and security has been increased on the route.

"To date we have been happy with with security measures that have been in place and we are comfortable with the response from the Bangladesh authorities and the increased security presence we have been provided in light of the incident."

The entire Australian contingent – including travelling media – have been getting a convoy to and from the ground both in Dhaka, where the first Test was held, and Chittagong, where the tourists are trying to level the two-Test series.

Australia cancelled a tour to Bangladesh in 2015 because of security concerns, but studied the approach taken by England during a tour last year in preparing their security operation for this tour.

There were no visible signs of fear or distress from Australian players at the team hotel on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Players and staff have largely been confined to their hotels during the tour when not training or playing, with little sightseeing being undertaken, in part due to security concerns.

Does this really need an article?

:))

Odd, no report on this incident last night.

Hopefully the guilty person is found and penalized. Jailed for 10 years

It's a stone which was hurled .... 'projectile'

South america - soccer, south asia - cricket have crazy, lunatic fans these minor things are expected at times.

Throwing stones at the vehicle of visitors, even if by kids, is unacceptable behaviour. Let us not make light of the incident just because we are "used" to it.

Well since a window was broken this was indeed pretty serious, what if one of the players got injured? The lot above playing it down are hysterical, when was the last time your car/bus/train window broke & you didn;t get at least a scare?

What if it was something else? Would a molotov cocktail illicit such a response or does your threshold for condemnation only starts at serious/grave injuries to their players?

Exactly. It is our inborn error to make mountain out of molehill. Its such an incident which should not get noticed at all.But look at the thread title ."rocked"," projectile".The use of such words may just distract you from the original happening.

The last paragraph is the most important. It was such an incident which has caused no fear at all in the mind of the Aussies. And that is all that matters.

The use of words such as "projectile" (You'd think the kid was Kim Jong Un!) or "rocked" is a smidgen excessive.

But yes it probably shouldn't be brushed aside.

The real issue is if a child could manage to toss a rock at their bus, what stops an adult from chucking something far more serious?

Bangladesh fans have a thing for opposition team buses. Remember the world cup game against west indies in 2011.

Even if such a thing happens and we think it is "normal", we have to show zero tolerance for such conducts.

That's click bait title from Aussie media, though the CA press release is far more reassuring, it need not have been.

That was the point, people are taking this so callously? What if this was anything more serious, than a rock? Also shattered window, can anyone with half a brain say that a window shattering in front of you wouldn;t scare you, even if for a moment?

If there are such brave souls on this forum, I'd ask them to go on UN aid missions in various places with a history of violence.

Condoning an act like this, and then wondering why other teams are reluctant to tour should come as no surprise.

:)) They want to use this as an excuse to return home because defeat is a big probability

Statement from BCB

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is aware of the report of damage to a window of the Australia Cricket Team’s bus while returning to the hotel from the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong following the end of play on day one of the second Test on Monday.

The BCB has taken this matter with utmost seriousness and a high-power committee has been formed by the concerned security agencies to investigate and find out the facts.

The Board has been in constant communication with the Australian Cricket Team management. As added assurance, security measures have been enhanced on the travelling route of the teams. The Australia Cricket Team has expressed its satisfaction and comfort with the security operation in place and has appreciated the response from the BCB and the local authorities following Monday’s incident.

I can shed light on a few reasons the issue is worrying the team.

a) a rock heavy enough to break a bus window makes a loud cracking sound. For a moment- with loud noise & shattering glass it will seem like a gunshot.

B) The addition of the "child"to the story has come entirely from the posters here- a mental association game to make the whole thing seem innocent & "childish"when there is no such mention of that in that actual report.

Let me play the same semantic game. "A projectile, launched directly at the window where Australian team and officials were sitting, hit the vehicle with enough force to shatter the glass. Such an attack may have come from a fundamentalist ISIS operative testing team security procedures as a guide for future attacks."
Now, none of that is in the original either- but portrayed in a more sinister way. Both version diverge from the few known facts.

C) Travel approval/recommendations in Australian comes through the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade. (In Australia sport defers to govt guidelines & procedures on such matters & is not a law unto itself as cricket may be in other nations. They are well down the pecking order) Many DFAT officials knew and in fact frequent the cafe where many hostages were taken & killed just a year or so ago in Dhaka.

As a result, the threat report on Bangladesh is still very high, close to the point where non-essential travel (e.g sport) could be recommended against if there is the slightest negative shift in the threat level or the promised level of security.

So it turns out this was minor- but recent events are fresh enough in the minds of the people consulting/recommending with security staff that a hostile act (no there way to interpret it) and the similarity in the moment to a shot or a bomb will be taken seriously.

Wanted to edit, but time forbade. The DFAT officials worked, spoke, consulted daily with the hostages/dead in Dhaka as part of shared projects & lifestyle among expats in Dhaka. They feel/see the risk. It's all fine to say it was a rock this time, but to the government department CA seeks advice from, that rock will be about as welcome as a rock attack would be the next time a country tours Pakistan.

What?

I literally quoted straight from the article in post #3. Read the article again (paragraph 2).

It says, "...which Cricket Australia suspect was caused by a small rock or stone thrown by a child."

Cricket Australia statement does not mention a child. See Post#7
