Australian cricketer subject of death threat in Pakistan before Test series

Cricket Australia and the Pakistan Cricket Board have investigated a death threat sent to the partner of Australian spinner Ashton Agar on social media, warning that the cricketer should not travel to Pakistan.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age can reveal that a message was sent to Agar’s partner, Madeleine, on social media, which was immediately reported to CA and the PCB.

A team spokesperson confirmed Agar was the subject of the death threat, but team security has investigated and do not believe it is a credible threat. There is a suggestion it is from a fake Instagram account, potentially from India.

The Australian team had planned for such disruptions on their first tour to Pakistan since 1998.

Agar was said to be in good spirits despite the direct message sent to his wife.

The team will have their first training session on Tuesday before Friday’s first Test at Rawalpindi.

From PCB:

“Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content has been investigated by the PCB, CA and combined Government security agencies.

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which, in this case, is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time.”

I don’t understand

Why can’t these players switch off the comments section on their social media when it comes to sensitive security posts?

An SENA player traveling to pakistan will have trolls in their comments section from the sub continent making silly comments. Why don’t they just turn it off and avoid the nonsense all together?

It has been traced to an fake instagram account in India.

Not a random fool. Indians do their best to derail international cricket to return in Pakistan. The SENA players are already behaving like their lives are under threat and these silly comments on social media make them even more terrified

Ramiz was right. The SENA players don’t seem to have an issue when traveling alone to Pakistan for PSL etc but as a group they act like they are spooked all the time!

Shame on whoever orchestrated this and we know this happened with NZ as well. Plz clearly state the origin of the threat in the thread heading as it is misleading.

So much desperation to cause the postponement of the series.

Some people are so sad.

I don’t understand why 95% Indian users of the Internet think it’s ok to harrass women or make such threats/emails. Why isn’t their government doing enough to clamp down these scams and cyber criminals?

This is bound to happen. Some stupid Indian troll will try to go lengths to sabotage this tour. If the blackmailer has been identified. Action should be taken through cyber crime investigation.

Who’s going to do what? Nothing will happen. What did they do about the last cyber criminal who sent the email to Guptil’s wife?

No idea why such trolls deserve any attention whatsoever. Any one of us can create a fake Insta account and flood these cricketers’ pages with death threats when they are touring India next.

This.

Trolls should be ignored. Full stop.

And I seriously doubt that it was an email from a random Indian account that made NZ pack up and leave Pakistan. They must have had more serious intelligence from elsewhere.

Then our Indian friends tell us it's pakistan who constantly is trying to derail India in its activities.

Why would the news agencies publish this, it is only going to encourage the trolls.

Too much generalization happening here.

One idiot did this.

The main point is that CA and other Boards should understand that the India-Pakistan dynamics are such that these things will happen and they need to have processes in place to quickly understand and assess threats, and then to move on.

English does not seem to be the strong suit of Gujarati students or at least this particular university. Tons of grammar and spelling mistakes in, what you would consider to be professional profiles. I can understand if one was writing elsewhere and making such mistakes but this sort of stuff on LinkedIN and the like, is pretty sad.

It seems like someone was trolling. I hope the tour will not be canceled based on this "threat".

Yeah. I agree.

News agencies need to be more responsible.

condemn such behavior and hope he is fined/ apprehended but I guess it doesn’t take much to make a headline in Pakistan.

Before you go on a hunt to find equivalences it applies to Indian media too which isn’t that far ahead in terms of foolishness or call it in a way shrewdness to know what news sells.

That’s about it. Nothing much to look into this.

It's good to out them and their social media profiles ASAP rather than let it simmer behind the scenes. This is good, being proactive. Name and shame.

Also need to get interpol involved if Indian authorities do not take action.

I hope ISI have tracked it down and prepare for an extraction. Lets see how brave he is in the torture chamber.

I can’t speak for others but as a cricket fan I am excited for this series because it is 2 top teams playing a full series.

Agree that the perpetrator is dumb and foolish and maybe his naming and shaming around the internet, publishing of his linkedin etc has shaken him a little. Hopefully now this is the last we hear of any such antics and now we can enjoy a hard fought and entertaining series.

His employer is probably goona give him a raise.

And authorities will not do anything to prosecute him.

How many other times has this happened?

If a Pakistani had done this they would be calling for sanctions and isolation.

This is Indian racism towards Pakistan. It needs to be dealt with.

Trust me he is not the only indian who doesn't want this tour to go ahead. During the past couple of days I have seen many who just can't accept India's new arch rival Australia is touring Pakistan. :inti

Problem is these sort of things can escalate and cause disruption and concerns as we saw with the New Zealand tour of Pakistan.

It only takes one idiot.......

Very pleased with CA's reaction to this - measured and mature.

Truth of the matter is, BJP and Sanghies have a very well sourced IT cell whose only job is to spread lies, false information and to create these kind of accounts and make such tweets.

I won't be surprised one bit if this mental midget somehow got some sort of benefit from religious fanatics who are currently ruling over India.

So why doesn't the India govt clamp on it?
Most probably because this is exactly what it wants - and who knows, if this fascist indian govt actually supports such sick activities?

Thank you for bravely speaking the truth.

Stick to the topic and no need to bring in Time Pass type discussions into this thread.

Would love to see the victim posting a statement and letting the western world know whose behind the death threats. At least then the world will see that Majority of Indians don’t want cricket returning to Pakistan.

If only the majority were like BVB…

Guys,

While we appreciate the feedback and observations, please refrain from commenting on our roles and responsibilities as moderators in the public forums.

Wait .. am I missing something .. how was the instagram account traced back to an Indian linkedIn account ?

I think he was idiotic enough to use his email address to verify the fake instagram account he set up

Is this a verified case of an Indian sending in a fake threat, with no holes in that claim?

Do Pakistanis care or even know what teams are touring India and if they did would they rather tune in than sending death threats? Why the obsession?

Will Indian authorities do anything to prosecute him or the one that sent threats to NZ?

Is their media racist towards Pakistanis and is guiding them towards this?

If the company he is working is reputable, they should fire him for this. He has put his company in bad light.

I feel pity for this dude...has an education and looks like he has a decent job?..what in his life could be so bad that he thought sending a death threat to a person's wife is a good or even funny idea. I get that there are pranksters but insinuating death takes some screws to be loose. Does Pakistan cricket really need to affect his psyche that much if he is probably living a decent life.

No, No, and finally Yes!

Only Indian Govt and Indian media have this insane obsession with deriding and tripping Pakistan at every level but have failed on most levels in last few years. The guy should be given a proper Chittrol (size 12 Bata Flip Flops dipped and seasoned in oil). Don't even stop till he starts asking for his mommy!

This Indian fascination of isolating Pakistan has already cost them a lot in last couple of years (on many levels)...yet morons like this guy are supposedly ruuning rampant in their society (every where) because Govt sides and abbets with such low life idiots!

It was all over gthe net and news that they had nothing to show for when PCB asked for the proof or a source...one thing which could have stopped this lowlife troll would be if that earlier guiy was named, shamed, and punished.

Not holding my breath for such an action from the Modi govt and co.

The NZ backing out doesn't make sense for a few reasons.

1. UK government didn't use the same reason when England backed out. In fact, Uk government didn't even ask the team to back out and said their security advisory remained unchanged.
2. Australia went ahead with the tour despite that supposed threat.

Both Australia and UK government didn't take the threat seriously.

So the threat was serious for NZ government but not UK or Australian government? Doesn't make sense. These countries all share intelligence via 5 eyes. We know Australia would have found any reason to back if they could.

This guy should burn his degrees. It would have been understandable if this was done by some ignorant person.

BTW where this news come from abt this guy Mridul Tiwari?

It just says as per Twitter - its only coming out of Pakistani news channels. Where was she emailed? in Australia?

Mridul Tiwari is a famous youtuber. Coz the email host has to request IP location of user, cops involved, its not that simple and was it done via cyber cafe or personal

It appears the way he was traced was that he used his genuine email to create a fake instagram account to issue the threat, and that email address was traced to his LinkedIn account. So this is quite solid evidence, barring his LinkedIn account getting hacked.

Must be a fool to give away so easily or smart to get someone else accused. Coz complaint must have gone to insta, who probably had to see eveidence and then give away pvt info I assume. He should be interrogated, coz cops can make him say the truth and this is serious stuff

Then Indian's here wonder why people like me hate India so much!. This time the Pak security agencies were prepared after the New Zealand players experienced the same. The Indian propaganda machine has been exposed good and proper here. Even the picture of the Indian has been shown here together with his entire profile as seen in posts 8 and 9. We need to expose this to the entire Cricketing fraternity and world in general.

I agree, bit too easy all this.

Obviously done by someone with not best interests of Pakistan at heart but not sure if the perp is this guy.

CA says Agar death threat ‘not a risk’ on eve of historic series

Rawalpindi: Australia’s cricketers remain in “good spirits” and will continue preparations as normal before Friday’s first Test, despite a death threat sent to the partner of Ashton Agar, according to Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Todd Greenberg.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age revealed on Monday evening that Cricket Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board and government security agencies had investigated a death threat sent to Agar’s partner, Madeleine, on social media.

The message warned that Agar, who hasn’t played a Test since 2017 against Bangladesh, should not travel to Pakistan.

The threat was immediately reported to CA and the PCB and was investigated throughout Monday, four days before Australia’s first Test in Pakistan since 1998.

CA said in a statement the threat was “not a risk” and that it would not have an impact on the tour or the team’s movements.

“Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content has been investigated by the PCB, CA and combined government security agencies,” the statement read.

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which, in this case, is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time.”

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age have seen a copy of the message.

A portion of the message reads: “This is a warning for your husband Ashton Agar if he comes to tour against Pakistan he won’t come [back] alive.” The message also references Agar’s children, which he does not have.

The threat has not pleased the PCB just before such an historic tour.

Greenberg, the players chief, is in Pakistan with the Australian team and said the group would continue to be briefed.

“Threats like this were expected and the players and their families were well briefed by CA and the ACA before leaving Australia,” Greenberg told the Herald. “We have good communication with the playing group and will continue to keep them informed and educated on these types of issues.

“The players are all in great spirits and looking forward to the first test starting on Friday.”

Pakistan has hosted only six Test matches since 2009 due to security reasons in the years after Sri Lanka’s team bus was attacked by gunmen 13 years ago.

The Australian team had planned for such disruptions on their first tour to Pakistan since 1998.

Security agencies, CA and the PCB have procedures in place for investigating these kinds of messages that target players and their families.

Agar was said to be in good spirits despite the direct message sent to his wife. He is comfortable with the procedures that have been followed.

The team had their first training session on Tuesday before Friday’s first Test at Rawalpindi, where there will be a huge security presence.

Pakistan’s cricket community truly hopes this series goes ahead after New Zealand’s limited-overs tour in September was cancelled without a ball bowled due to a mysterious security issue.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja slammed the decision at the time.

“Walking out of the tour by taking a unilateral approach on a security threat is very frustrating. Especially when it’s not shared!” he wrote on Twitter.

Glad the relevant parties have treated the 'threat' the way it deserves to be treated. Hopefully no more similar sorts of disruptions going forward. Probably doesn't help the players in any way

Can't pak embassy file a case in India? Death threat is a serious crime..

Would love to see the victim posting a statement and letting the western world know whose behind the death threats. At least then the world will see that Majority of Indians don’t want cricket returning to Pakistan.

Show the proof..

ISLAMABAD: Australia batsman Steve Smith said on Tuesday the players felt "incredibly safe" on their first tour of Pakistan in nearly 25 years, despite spinner Ashton Agar receiving a death threat via social media just days before the start of the first Test.

Agar was warned against travelling to Pakistan, though the threat was dismissed following an investigation by the boards of Pakistan and Australia and government security agencies.

Cricket Australia said extensive security plans were in place for such social media activity and that the threat was "not considered a risk".

Smith said the team trusted the security arrangements in place. "We're aware of social media and the unfortunate events that can occur on platforms," he told reporters ahead of the first Test, which starts on Friday in Rawalpindi.

"We've got a lot of people working here with us, we trust our security and we're feeling incredibly safe in Pakistan."

Top teams have largely shunned Pakistan since an attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six policemen and two civilians. International sides have recently started touring Pakistan again but in September New Zealand returned home after abruptly abandoning a tour minutes before the opening game in Rawalpindi following a government security alert. England followed suit three days later, withdrawing their men's and women's teams from a tour in October citing the "mental and physical well-being" of players.

Smith said that he was relishing the challenge of playing in Pakistan. "It's great to be back here and playing cricket," he said.

"It's the first time a lot of us have been here and we're excited. We know how passionate Pakistanis are about cricket."

Smith sustained a concussion in a match against Sri Lanka in Sydney last month, slamming his head to the ground after falling over the boundary rope but the 32-year-old said he had progressed well.

"It's the first session back for me facing fast bowling. I'm recovering from the concussion and I've faced some side-arm and spinners," Smith said. "The head has progressed really well the last few days. I'm feeling in a good space, done a lot of stuff where I've got my heart rate up to a good amount and brought it down ... all part of the protocols of getting back to playing."

Majority of Indians won't even know that Australia is touring Pakistan, just like they won't know that SL or WI was touring India. Thanks to media, most people have completely wrong perception about India cricket followers. An average international T20 cricket match scheduled for late evening in India is watched by some 12-16 million people, WC semis when India was playing was around 28 mn on 1st day and when match spilled over to the following day, the viewership dropped to some 13 mn. Stadiums are empty for test matches. While the numbers are much larger than other countries but in absolute terms is it is like 1%-2% of Indian population. And while it is entirely possible that there may be some fools in India who would engage in such dirty stuff of sending mails/mssges, majority of us can't care less about teams touring Pakistan. I personally, i am happy that cricket is returning to Pakistan, the crowd deserves that.

Can't pak embassy file a case in India? Death threat is a serious crime..

Most of the time, Pakistan govt's dossiers and reports without any evidences are meant for consumption of Pakistani population, just to show to them that "case has been cracked". Have you ever seen any follow-up on such accusations towards India? Do you remember the first reactions of Pakistan officials when SL team bus was attacked - It is being carried out by India was the TV statement. And then an year later their official records show it was done by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and the terrorists involved in the attack were killed during a police raid in Lahore with their leader being killed in Afghanistan.

I wonder if this was the main reason for the kiwis to back out of the tour, if so i am incredibly angry.......a random troll sends a threatening message and the whole tour is cancelled, the kiwis are looking far worse off now than even before.

It was so bad that their PM didn’t want to interact with the Pakistan pm on the matter.

Jacinda Arden is no saint or saviour she is made out to be

If it originated in India, its pathetic - one loony who muddies the pond. As a cricket lover - frankly i think half the people in india would not even know this series is waiting to happen and the other half would relish the prospect of two top teams playing, like in this series.
Whilst on the one loony bit, the pathetic mohammed shami trolling after the india pak T20 originated in pak, the user handles were created before the games with zero followers, their profiles showed various locations in pak.
#ShamikiFarziTrolling

Any ways i wish all the best that the series goes off safely and we have fantastic tour with memorable displays of on field skills.

Indian trolls need to be careful, they may hurt their own country. Imagine in response to this, Pakistani posts such threat to IPL foreign players & media finds out he is affiliated with Lashkar, Jaish or any other such organisation. Then that threat would not be taken lightly.

Question is - is it really him?
Yeah that's a concern.
Problem is our governments always have been on different ends of rope and our agencies don't share any intel.
Else it would've been easy to find the source of these kind of threats and take necessary action.

And what is the revelance of any of this (true or not)? The evidence here is quite solid.

What exactly is the evidence could you pls share with us? All i see is an Instagram message and a LinkedIn profile, no commentary on how the 2 are connected. I read Sydney morning herald and there's no mention of some random india guy sending that threat. Read the PCB official statement and no mention of Indian guy in that statement as well. If it's that well established that this particular guy sent thr threat, why not tell it in media?

Good point

What are BCCI/IPL or Indian gov going to do if their foreign players receive a genuine threat from these so called terrorist organisations? It will turn into the boy who cried Wolf situation

He is linked by his email address. Official statements from cricket boards are not going to talk about the detailed security investigation.

Until such people are made an example of, then this sort of idiotic behaviour will continue.

They thought they would cause the same issues that occurred when New Zealand were in Pakistan.

Who is to know it never happened? it probably never made it public

Great to see CA have brushed off this perceived 'threat'.

There would have been a lot of work behind the scenes by the relevant security parties that we wouldn't have seen in anticipation of these pathetic sabotage attempts by unfriendly actors.

I'm not an expert on the Indian legal system, but isn't this an offence in India?
