Australian Men's squads for ICC 2023 World Cup, tours of South Africa and India

The National Selection Panel (NSP) has named the following men’s squads for the Qantas Tour of South Africa, One Day Series against India and an initial 18-player squad for the ICC 2023 World Cup.

The squad travels to South Africa for three T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals, then onto India for a three match ODI series followed by the ICC 2023 World Cup.

Australian T20 squad:

Mitchell Marsh (WA/Fremantle Cricket Club) (c)

Matt Short (VIC/Northcote Cricket Club)

Steve Smith (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)

Marcus Stoinis (WA/Subiaco Floreat Cricket Club)

Adam Zampa (NSW/Sutherland Cricket Club)

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and David Warner will miss the T20 Series in preparation for the World Cup while Ashton Agar has been given more time to recover from a calf injury. All will join for the one-day leg of the South African tour.

West Australian all-rounder Aaron Hardie, South Australian Spencer Johnson and Victorian Matt Short join their first Australian tour, while current West Australian captain Mitchell Marsh will lead a senior Australian team for the first time during the South African T20 Series, having previously captained at under 19 national level.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said: “Mitch has long been a senior player within the white ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at international level. We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa.

“Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future. This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment.

“Aaron has impressed in recent outings for Australia A as well as for the Scorchers while Matt has blossomed with extra responsibility at the top of the order for the Strikers.

“Spencer’s left-arm pace and bounce was highly effective in his first season for the Heat. This trip will be a fantastic experience for all three and the chance to play their first games for their country.”

Jason Behrendorff also returns to national colours for the first time since the 2022 Pakistan tour.

*Glenn Maxwell will miss the ODI series in South Africa (family leave) and rejoin the squad in India. Pat Cummins will join the squad for the ODI series in South Africa to prepare for India as he recovers from a fractured left wrist sustained on the first day of the final Ashes Test match in London.

“Pat injured his left wrist diving in the field on the first day at The Oval,” Bailey said. “He has an undisplaced fracture of his left radius which requires six weeks rehabilitation.

“We expect him to join the squad during the South African ODI Series. We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign.

“There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation.”

The squad is largely a continuation of the group which last defeated India 2-1 in March with the addition of Hardie, promising young spinner Tanveer Sangha, who is yet to debut in national colours but has previously toured with the Australian T20 squad, and the omission of Marnus Labuschagne.

A provisional World Cup squad of 15 players will be named in early September, with squad finalisation required on September 28.

Bailey said: “This side has been extremely impressive for several years in limited overs cricket. There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group which you need in a World Cup.”

Head's World Cup dream in doubt as Aussies name ODI squad

Short, Johnson in line for debuts as Australia name squad without Travis Head for three ODIs in India before World Cup
Travis Head's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after it was announced the opener will return to Australia rather than joining the ODI squad in India for a three-match bilateral series next week.

A host of first-choice players including captain Pat Cummins will be back in Australian gold after missing the ongoing campaign in South Africa.

But the absence of Head is significant after he fractured his left hand in the fourth ODI in Pretoria.

Surgery is understood to be one of the options considered for the opening batter. Even if he does not go under the knife, the 29-year-old appears to be in a race against time to feature at the World Cup, which begins in three weeks.

The only other member of the 15-man squad recently named for the World Cup (which is subject to change until September 28) who will not be in India for three-ODI series is Ashton Agar, who remains on family leave for the birth of his first child.

Along with Short and Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Tanveer Sanga, Nathan Ellis are the other non-World Cup squad members heading to India.

Aaron Hardie is not, despite being named in an initial 18-man group for the tournament, while Tim David and Michael Neser are also heading home after playing multiple matches in South Africa.

Head's injury is the latest in a series of injury concerns hanging over the Australian team heading into the pinnacle 50-over event.

Glenn Maxwell, whose wife Vini gave birth earlier this week, has been named despite recent complications over his left leg, which he broke in a gruesome accident last year. Ankle pain ruled him out of the South Africa ODIs.

Cummins (wrist), Mitchell Starc (groin and shoulder) and Steve Smith (wrist) are all at various stages in their recovery from injuries suffered during a gruelling six-Test campaign in the UK earlier this year.

Mitch Marsh, who is opening in the ongoing fifth ODI in Johannesberg, could partner David Warner against the new ball for the World Cup if Head is not available.

Labuschagne is in the box seat to take the vacant squad spot after big innings in the first two matches in South Africa and would compete with the likes of Green and Josh Inglis for a middle-order berth if he won a spot in the 15-man group.

Head being injured is a big blow to the Aussie team, will they open with Mitch Marsh in the WC isntead? That would open a place ofr Labuchagne to come in

India have named two separate squads for the ODI series at home against Australia before the commencement of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

India have recalled veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to the ODI squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia right before the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup that begins next month. Ashwin, who last played an ODI in January 2022, comes in as the third spinner behind Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

Notably, the off-spinner wasn’t a part of the 15-member World Cup squad India announced and did not make it to the Asia Cup either. The two ODIs against South Africa in 2022 were his first in five years in the fifty-overs format for India before he was sidelined again.

KL Rahul will lead the team in the first two games with regular skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rested. The duo return for the final ODI with Rohit leading the side again.

Washington Sundar, who flew to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup final, is also retained in both squads. Axar Patel, who injured himself ahead of the final, is recovering and will play the third ODI subject to fitness.

Rohit Sharma had revealed in the press conference after the Asia Cup that he was in talks with Ashwin.

“As a spinner-all-rounder, Ashwin is in line, I have been talking to him on the phone," Rohit said on Sunday.

"The injury happened to Axar at the last minute. Washington was available, so he had to come and perform the role for us. He (Washington) was cricket-fit because he was part of the Asian Games camp (in Bengaluru)."

The series, which begins on September 22, will be the final one either team plays ahead of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Both teams are within sight of the coveted No.1 ranking in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings. A series win will ensure India head into the World Cup as the No.1 ranked team. Meanwhile, Australia, who slipped up after the series loss to South Africa, can regain the top ranking if they beat India 3-0.

India had also announced their 15-member squad for the World Cup and have until 28 September to make changes to the squad, after which any alterations will be subject to approval by the ICC.

Australia also announced their squad for the series with a few key players making a much-awaited return.

This will be a big plus for Australian to play against India in these conditions before the World Cup. It seems a bit unfair for other teams who only have a couple of warm up games before the World Cup and these two teams have a proper 3 match ODI series.

Australia, NZ, SA these countries know Indian pitches like back of their palm. THey play a lot of bilaterals here. Plus most of their key players know every inch of key venues having played in the IPL for years. They are not going to learn anything new.

Yes, most of the Australian players have played plenty of cricket in India in recent years but it would still be helpful to play a series just days before the world cup.

UPDATE - Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are unavailable for Australia's first ODI against India tomorrow

They have sent a full strength world cup squad for this tour. Probably the first bilateral they will play with the best available players in last 3-4 years.

Australia will be without the services of two key players for the start of the three-match ODI series against India, which begins on Friday, 22 September.

Pat Cummins confirmed that Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are set to miss the opening match against India but remains hopeful of their participation towards the end of the three-match series.

Starc continues to recover from groin and shoulder issues from the trying Ashes series in the UK and had missed the South Africa white-ball series earlier.

Maxwell, on the other hand, was set to play against the Proteas but aggravated his ankle injury in the lead-up to the series and flew back home for the birth of his child.

Australia welcome back a host of their stars ahead of the World Cup for the series against India, including Steve Smith and skipper Cummins after their respective recoveries from wrist injuries.

The two teams will also be vying for the top spot in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings. Pakistan are currently on top but do not play any other competitive matches before the start of their World Cup campaign.India are second with 115 points after their Asia Cup triumph with Australia closely trailing them with 113.

The outcomes of the series will decide who will head into the World Cup as the No.1 ODI team.
