New Zealand Cricket confirms T20I tour for Australian men's team

New Zealand Cricket has today confirmed that the Australian men’s team will tour New Zealand in mid-March 2022 for a short T20 International series.

The announcement follows confirmation this week of the schedule for the proposed Australian men’s team tour to Pakistan early next year for three Test matches, three One-Day Internationals and one T20 International.

Australia’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour will comprise players not required for the Test Matches in Pakistan.

Nick Hockley, CA CEO, said:

“New Zealand’s home summer schedule has been heavily impacted by the pandemic, and we are pleased to be able to support our closest neighbour with this T20I tour.”

“As well as supporting New Zealand Cricket to host a full summer of international cricket, it will also be a great opportunity for our men’s T20 team to ramp up their preparations ahead of our home ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in October and November next year.”

NZC chief executive David White said his organisation was extremely grateful for Cricket Australia’s support at such a challenging time.

“The impact of Covid-19 has meant a number of changes to our schedule - and we want to place on record our thanks to Cricket Australia for agreeing to send a team across the Tasman at such short notice.

“NZC and CA have always enjoyed a close relationship and we really appreciate the lengths they’ve gone to in order to help us.”

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand’s white-ball cricket tour to Australia later this month is in doubt because of extended border restrictions which require the team to have isolation places booked for their return.

The Black Caps are due to leave for Australia on Jan. 24, to play one-day matches on Jan. 30, Feb. 2 and Feb. 5 and a Twenty20 international at Canberra on Feb. 8.

New Zealand Cricket didn’t book places in managed isolation for the team in February because they anticipated the implementation in mid-January of a policy which would allow New Zealand citizens and residents returning from Australia to do so without going through managed isolation.

The change has now been delayed until late February because of the emergence of the omicron variant which New Zealand so far has contained at the border.

New Zealand Cricket on Friday said it expects the Australian tour to go ahead but is discussing options with Cricket Australia. That might include rescheduling or delaying the team’s return from Australia. A spokesperson told media the team will not travel to Australia unless a plan is in place for its return.

BLACKCAPS tour to Australia postponed

The BLACKCAPS tour of Australia, initially scheduled for January 24-February 9, has been postponed until further notice, due to the lack of certainty over when the squad will be able to return to New Zealand.

Despite a proposal from New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Australia to extend the length of the tour so that the BLACKCAPS could return home at a time more manageable for the MIQ process, the Government confirmed today it had no capacity to meet the request.

Discussions are now continuing with CA over when the postponed fixtures will be played.

NZC chief executive David White said the tour was initially scheduled last year, after the Government signalled its intention to relax MIQ restrictions relating to the trans-Tasman border.

“As we now know, the advent of Omicron prompted a change of heart from the Government, resulting in a hard 10-day mandatory isolation period being imposed on all incoming travellers,” said Mr White.

“NZC and CA had explored a proposal to expand the tour and to push out the date on which the squad might return to New Zealand, in the hope that might be more achievable for the Government.

“But we received advice this morning that they could not provide certainty over this, either.”

Postponement of upcoming Dettol men’s ODI and T20I series against New Zealand

New Zealand’s men’s white-ball tour to Australia, scheduled for January 24 - February 9, has been postponed until further notice due to New Zealand’s border controls, quarantine requirements and the resulting uncertainty over when the squad would be able to return to New Zealand.

Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) will discuss when the postponed fixtures can be played.

CA will confirm the schedule for the Dettol T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka in coming days.

Nick Hockley, CA CEO, said: “We are extremely disappointed that we won’t be able to play the scheduled matches against New Zealand as planned, however we will continue to work with New Zealand Cricket to reschedule the series.

“We thank NZC, who made every effort to make the series happen, however because they were unable to get certainty over return quarantine arrangements, it is simply just not possible at this time.

“We know fans will be disappointed and thank them for their understanding given the unique circumstances that the global pandemic presents for everyone.

“We look forward to welcoming Sri Lanka to Australia next month and will confirm the schedule for that series as soon as possible.”

NZC chief executive David White said: “As we now know, the advent of Omicron prompted a change of heart from the NZ Government, resulting in a hard 10-day mandatory isolation period being imposed on all incoming travellers.

“NZC and CA had explored a proposal to expand the tour and to push out the date on which the squad might return to New Zealand in the hope that might be more achievable for the Government. Unfortunately, we received advice this morning that they could not provide certainty over this.”

Ticket purchasers for all matches that have been postponed will be fully refunded and will be contacted directly by the relevant ticket agent.

It's 2022 and everybody is still paranoid about Covid.

When are we going to show this thing the finger?

NZ doesn't want a omicron breakout in NZ.

Tour is off because the NZ government couldn't guarantee MIQ facilities for returning players.

New Zealand dodged a bullet here. They always lose to Australia.

Australia & NZ boards only really care about series with India.

They would do anything humanly possible not to cancel a series with India.

That’s unfortunate, the Omicron variant has really set the world back in its ongoing battle with Covid.

It was a T20 tournament, NZ definitely had a chance, shame the tour was canned.. If it was a test series it would have been a whitewash by Aus...

How come pakistan supporters get so emotional over India playing Aus or Eng.

Its not about who India plays. India could well play a 5 test series against Uganda and still make a profit.

Its about the hypocrites sitting in Australia and England boards who make all this hoo-ha about players well being and Covid variant blah blah when they play poorer boards.

So why does it bother you or any other pakistan supporter. Its not like PCB are not hypocrites so I dont know why it bothers you so much.

So how did Bangladesh player get spots? How are SA player getting spots?

Why is it an issue only for NZ players travelling abroad and returning?

Give me one example of hypocrisy by PCB?

Pakistan is the biggest supporter of smaller cricket boards.

The NZ tour of Australia was arranged when there was an open travel bubble between NZ and Australia last year, so the assumption was that no MIQ would be required. There’s a massive queue for MIQ places for returning NZ citizens stuck overseas, so the NZC was reluctant to take up any more spaces when they’d already had to arrange for tours by Bangladesh, SA, Australia and the Netherlands. The original plan was for the tour to Australia to be lengthened, but finally earlier this week the government announced that they’re putting a temporary freeze on making new MIQ spaces available due to the surge in Omicron cases detected at the border, so the NZC had to pull the plug.

New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Australia have agreed to abandon the BLACKCAPS upcoming T20 mini-series, scheduled to be played in Napier next month.

The short, four day long series, set down for McLean Park, Napier on March 17, 18 and 20, was initially arranged on the basis of the New Zealand Government’s plan to relax restrictions at the trans-Tasman border.

However, with those plans now substantially delayed, and no MIQ accommodation available for the Australian side on their scheduled arrival into New Zealand, NZC has been given no choice but to abandon the series.

As a consequence of this (and given the cancellations would have left the Hawke’s Bay region with a substantially reduced international programme) the BLACKCAPS-Netherlands T20 on March 25, previously scheduled for Bay Oval, Tauranga, will now be played at Napier’s McLean Park.

NZC chief executive David White said the move to call off the tour was inevitable given the restrictions at the border.

“At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the trans-Tasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria.

“However, the advent of Omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border, and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.

“It’s disappointing - but we know it’s the same for businesses and individuals and other sports, and we’re grateful for the international schedule we have.”

Mr White noted the series was a late addition to the New Zealand summer schedule and expressed his thanks to CA for their support, and their attempts to assist with the season.

On a more positive note, the remainder of the home international summer remains unaffected.

Since it is a regular T20 series, it doesn't have much relevance. It is not like World Super League where every game matters.

Australian men's T20I tour of New Zealand cancelled

The men’s T20 International series between New Zealand and Australia scheduled to be played in Napier next month has been cancelled.

Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have agreed to abandon the series due to New Zealand’s border controls and quarantine requirements.

The short three-game series was initially arranged on the basis of the New Zealand Government’s plan to relax restrictions at the trans-Tasman border.

However, with those plans now substantially delayed, the decision was made to abandon the series.

Nick Hockley, CA CEO, said: “We thank NZ Cricket for making every effort to host the series but unfortunately it wasn't possible given the border restrictions and quarantine requirements.''
