Watched his first innings against Ireland and have to say I am concerned about his form.

He was being squared up.
Playing down the wrong line.
Footwork all over the place.
Short of confidence.

Worrying signs.

Didn't look convincing at all. Even when set you can't tell if he's on a 100 or 0 without looking at the scorecard. Dead batting doesn't make you a great test batsmen. The best test players in the world right now can bat time and score at a good rate.

That is why you need a Fakhr style opener. Two super tuk tuk batsman will only build up pressure.

He better find some form before the England series starts, otherwise we're screwed. :/

Azhar has always had a problem of consuming a lot of deliveries at the crease without moving the scoreboard along. It doesn't help that he hasn't had much time in the middle lately which you need especially as you age and your reflexes slow - he's already 33 years of age.

He is simply not good enough to lead the batting lineup. Irrespective of the quality of the opposition, the match situation and the conditions, he is always in survival mode and scratches around. Just doesn't have the ability to impose himself, which is why he is not viewed as a threat by the opposition - never has and never will be.

He is a very good foil for a couple of master batsmen, but he cannot do the job on his own. People should lower their expectations from a sidekick batsman like him.

Anderson and Broad will eat him up for breakfast if he bats like he did today against England.

Very curious innings today.

He tried some curious things - like coming down the wicket etc - not sure what the issue is.

Almost reminds me of YK in 2016 when he decided to change his batting style by jumping up and down then realized he didnt need it by time of The Oval Test.

To say the least he batted like a tailender and would be breakfast for any half decent bowler under the given conditions.

Never liked this guy. Bats at super tuk tuk rate. Not sure what he tries to do out there.

his days are numbered imo

Doesnt play limited overs cricket , so simply wont have enough game form to be able to play a handful of test games for pakistan , we hardly play any test cricket

Probably better to draft fakhar into the playing xi

You people need to be patient with him. He hasn't played competitive for more than 8 months before this game. He was our best bat in AUS and scored a double ton against Starc, Hazlewood and co.I fully back him to hit the form soon.

With you on this.

His batting style is ancient

He's had success so far, but as he gets older he really needs to change his style to remain consistent

He'll be challenged now with more youngsters coming up

by the time we play England in the 2nd test, Fakhar and Sami will be opening, Azhar will bat at 3 and Babar wont be playing as well..

He's a slow starter, that's one thing I have noticed about him. I'm backing him to come good.

Fear the key word.

Both Azhar and Imam looked petrified out there. One can understand the young kid on debut being nervous but Azhar was batting like a debutant.

There is the 2nd innimgs (if we get one weather permitting) and a two day match against Leicestershire before the Lord's Test. There's still time for him to get a big knock under his belt.

Come on Saj, this is his first innings of the UK tour; he has never been the most naturally gifted batsman and we all know that. It takes him a while to get going and at his age it does get a little harder but am sure he will deliver the goods eventually.

We should be more concerned about Mohammad Amir and Sarfraz Ahmed. Lets not forget Azhar has been among our best and most consistent batsman for a while, it's got to a stage now that every time he does fail it's shocking. It's not easy being Azhar Ali. But when in doubt make sure you rewatch what he did to India (Astagfirullah) in the CT final (My god really enjoyed that am going to check his innings out again) and the Australians at Melbourne. He is one of the most gutsy cricketer's in the HISTORY of cricket, never write him off, never ever write him off.

Without exposing anyone, last year it was I don't think he should open but has now gone on to average 50+ as an opener. Now one bad innings lets press the panic button in spite of being one of the best batsman in the world and top 10 in the test rankings. Unlike Misbah he hasn't just scored in UAE.

Azhar needs to understand that this team is playing a different brand of cricket. Him being the senior needs to guide the team.

I hope he saw that batting with intent gives you results.

Agreed he’ll bounce back InshaAllah

Beautifully written.

I think that being dropped from ODI captaincy and team ate Azhar's confidence.

He needs more games to get his confidence back,

Surely the clock is ticking on this guy's career. I keep hearing what a classy and wonderful batsman he is, but all I ever see is single-figure scores with the occasional 50 in which he got three or four lives.

i hope shadab's and faheem's knock give some confidence to others at the top..

Well said man.

Lolx he averages mid 40s with 14 hundreds

He is going through a bad patch and hopefully will be back soon

Azhar Ali is like Rohit Sharma.

Lacking of confidence, but has a silent killer instinct. He can smash a 100 (250) out of no where with the whole team skittled for 20.

He has got a triple century and a double century against Aus in Aus; only Pakistani to do so in a series where he scored 400+ runs.

But i guess u where hibernating at that time

One major issue yesterday was strike rotation. Both openers seemed very wary of the pitch and were just intent on survival. In addition Imam and Azhar don't seem to be the best pair when it comes to running between the wickets.

Think running between wickets is an issue and could be due to basic survival instincts when faced with low form

Fairly solid innings by Azhar at Lord's in the first innings, but there is a technical issue which has crept into his batting - he seems to be playing around his front pad a lot, as was the case with his lbw to James Anderson.

I think it's more to do with slope at Lords. hes been easily affected by it and with his head falling over at times.
