SOMERSET SIGN AZHAR ALI

Somerset County Cricket Club can today confirm that we have signed Pakistan opening batsman Azhar Ali for our remaining Specsavers County Championship games.

The 33-year-old replaces Matt Renshaw as Somerset’s overseas player and he will join the Club in time to make his debut at Worcestershire later this month.

The right-hander has featured in 65 Tests for Pakistan, scoring over 5200 runs at an impressive average of 44.84. He has also scored over 10,200 runs in First Class cricket at an average of 40.13.

He has scored 14 hundreds in Test cricket and the high point of his career came in 2016 when he made an unbeaten triple century against the West Indies in Dubai.

He is also no stranger to the Cooper Associates County Ground having made 101 not out against Somerset in Pakistan’s tourist match in 2016.

After completing the signing Somerset Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “Finding the right fit at short notice can be challenging, however we are delighted to have secured a player of Azhar Ali’s character, pedigree and class for the remaining seven Specsavers County Championship matches.

“His experience at the top of the order will prove to be hugely valuable at the business end of the season. I have spoken to him several times over the last few weeks and he is very keen to share his knowledge of the game with our aspirational players, so the influence he can have within the changing room will also be vital for us as a Club.”

After signing for Somerset Azhar Ali said: “The standard of First Class cricket in England is very high and I hope that I can make a contribution to Somerset winning matches. I have heard good things about Somerset and I was impressed by what I saw at Taunton in 2016.

“I am looking forward to joining my new team mates and meeting the Somerset supporters soon.”

Good to hear. Given the paucity of tests Pakistan plays, our test specialists need match practice.

Any update on Asad Shafiq?

This should really benefit him in the long term.

Excellent news , hopefully it helps Azhar to prolong his career and achieve better heights .

Remember when Fakhar also signed for Somerset?

He was called back or refrained from joining them bcz of World XI matches, Pak had to field best team in that series, they were playing at home after years. He shouldn't regret it, everyone will prefer playing at home first time rather than county

Wasn't he called back for a fitness test?...Thats what I recall

Yeah they were called back for fitness test and the National T20 cup, which never took place, so he never represented Somerset due to the shambles.

He could have left after that but he stayed or was made to stay bcz of World XI games, there was 20 days difference bw Fitness tests and World XI games if i recall correctly

I think Zaman pulled out as he was supposed to be playing in that national T20 cup in Pakistan, there was delay in him joining as couldn't get the visa and by the time he had, the T20 cup thing had been decided so Somerset gave up on him. But then, PCB went and cancelled the T20 cup, so Zaman actually could have played for Somerset but it would have been too late due to the pathetic organisation by PCB.

Taunton is a flat, dry pitch with not too much pace or bounce - good batting wicket so Azhar should enjoy his stint.

He is not going to play all 7 games in Taunton, additionally conditions will always be tough in England when you open and this can be exaggerated by humidity which is more influential in generating swing then grass. Furthermore, there is no batsman who has a better awareness of their off stump then Azhar Ali. So, he will enjoy his run but it wont be an easy ride; regardless a great outing for him and somerset who will relish his international pedigree.

Somerset coaches will hopefully work with him on the technical issues we saw in the England series. They're 3rd in Division 1 so they seem to know what they're doing.

He'll learn more than letting his technique rot playing on the minefields back home in domestic cricket.

Great news .hopefully he will have successful stint .i am not expert but in eng series he was playing straight ball across the line with also his weight was over balancing .hopefully he will rectify this error

Expect Azhar to relish the flat, low bounce nature of the Taunton wicket. Good prep for the UAE series later this year.

Definitely, they're a decent club :mv and all their coaches will have the minimum ECB qualifications with solid backgrounds. Tresco could potentially return for the finishing stretch of the season but even if he doesn't am sure there will be plenty of wisdom for him to pass. At this level while not as consistent he can still deliver the goods, scored a hundred in his last game with a broken foot lol my all time favourite England opener, was a joy to watch him bat.

Really happy for him!
he is a tremendous hard worker and a good learner, hope he become better batsman.
I think he still stands a chance to sneak in in a WC 2019 plans, provided he display ample skills and temperament for ODIs in time to come.

Also looking forward for Asad to join something in UK/SA/Australia

Hopefully the game time helps him For 8 tests overs the next 4 months

He will do well.Good match practice and a good opportunity to earn some extra money as he doesn’t play T20 leagues.

Azhar batting on 33* right now.

Man I really want him to do well. I would love to see him getting another opportunity next year with Somerset.

Gone past 100 runs in the match, a 100 in this inns for him and Somerset are sureshot favourites here

On 70* off 110 balls. Has given Somerset a good lead here. Keep going Azhar!

He's a top class test batsman. Anybody who can score 92 in england against a peak anderson and broad, at the Oval in your first tour ever, is class..

Great ton, considering Pujara couldn't buy a run some days earlier. Took 70 days to get off the mark or something.

But but according to some experts pujara is better then Azhar Ali lol. Infact they say pujara is very good while Azhar is finished.

In one match Azhar has scored almost as many runs as Pujara did in half a dozen matches. Well played Ali.

In his defence, Pujara started playing a couple of months ago when the pitches had a bit more life, but take nothing away from Azhar, this was a brilliant innings

Great test batsman. Hopefully he continues to learn and improve, and given more opportunities like this.

A much-needed innings for Azhar after a tough period of late.

Azhar is the best test opener in the world.
Pujara is poor man's azhar ali in overseas conditions .
His impactful home performances are keeping him in the team

Would never have expected that from Pujara probably just a blip. Azhar's temperament is arguably the best in the world, never doubt him. It took him a while to get going during the Tests in England but he was instrumental in helping us win the 1st Test during challenging early cricket season conditions.

I'm happy for him scoring a century as it should boost his confidence and hopefully this will improve him as a player so he can score more runs for Pakistan. If he flops at international level then he won't have benefited much.

Meanwhile the sky is blue and the grass is green.

Think this should be a template for our test batsmen, when not on international duty, get yourself a county or Oz gig outside of the PSL. Good work Azhar, Asad and Haris would do well to follow...

I really hope Azhar keeps on playing cricket around the world before our next test series. He is still our best test batsman and a genuine world-class player. Would be sad to see him not score runs in the upcoming tours.
