Before the honour of his first MCG Test century, Azhar Ali had to cope with a scoreboard horror.

The Pakistan opener has shone in the gloomy Melbourne weather that has hung over the first two days of the Boxing Day Test.

His patient 139no from 287 balls has been exactly what the tourists needed amid a succession of rain delays, pacing them to a solid first innings of 6-310.

But Azhar's 12th Test century only came after a particularly nervous time in the 90s.

First there was a short rain delay, then he was at the non-striker's end when Asad Shafiq hit a straight drive.

Bowler Jackson Bird deflected the ball onto the stumps and the umpire called for a regulation video review, although it was obvious Azhar was in his crease.

To the shock of everyone, especially Azhar, the initial message that flashed up on the scoreboard was that he was out.

"My reaction was 'excuse me, how is that out?'," said teammate Wahab Riaz.

"I (later) asked Azhar as well and he said 'what is this, what's happening?'

"He said the umpire told him to stop and obviously the decision was changed."

Azhar also had nervous moments on six and 112, when he went for quick singles and throws from Nathan Lyon just missed the stumps.

In the same over as the second run-out chance, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade also just failed to get his gloves under a low caught behind chance off Mitchell Starc.

But Azhar otherwise was outstanding as the ton meant he became only the fifth Pakistan player to score more than 1000 runs in a calendar year.

He is also the first Pakistan batsman to score an MCG century since Mohammad Yousuf's 111 in the 2004 Boxing Day Test.

"He was very committed, very determined ... from the first day as well," Riaz said.

"He wanted to score a century and see his name on the board at the MCG.

"He wanted to achieve something and the way he's played the last two days, the way the Australians are bowling, he took his time really well.

"Obviously we are very happy for him - and because of him as well, we have put some runs on the board."

Azhar unfazed by 'boring' tag - Wahab

Azhar Ali made his 12th Test century at the MCG on Tuesday, and Pakistan team-mate Wahab Riaz defended him in the face of prior criticism.

Wahab Riaz says Azhar Ali is unconcerned by criticism regarding his scoring rate after the Pakistan batsman made an excellent century against Australia at the MCG on Tuesday.

Azhar, resuming on 66 not out, had reached 139 before another rain-affected day was called to a close with the tourists 310-6 batting first.

The opener's 12th Test century came up off 218 balls, including seven boundaries, and he hit five more fours before the close.

Azhar's strike rate - 41.50 across 55 Tests before the Boxing Day clash - has attracted negative comments in the past, but Wahab says his team-mate is not affected.

"Everyone has his own opinion, which could be right or wrong," Wahab said.

"Azhar has never taken offence over such comments. He knows what he is capable of and what are his skills.

"He has his own areas where he scores runs. If you look at his strike-rate it is not that slow.

"So I think we should not bother about what people say. They have their own opinion. Azhar knows where he is good at, how he needs to score runs.

"Azhar is showing himself as one of the best batsmen Pakistan had.

"The way he has maintained an average of 46 in the last five years it shows he has scored consistently for Pakistan throughout his career.

"I wish that he scores more runs and Pakistan continue to benefit from him. He is very determined and focused and always wants to deliver for Pakistan. That's why his hard work is paying off."

Ali has batted well, needs to up the rate for the next day for just 10 overs.

Not an attractive batsman but he gets the job done more often than not

He needs to improve his strike rotation though (infact all of our batsmen need to)

Can someone please post the picture of Misbhah's spirit award cake cutting ceremony?

Wow, what a batsman. Currently there aren't many batsmen who r better than Azhar in tests.
