What's new

Azhar Ali resigns as ODI captain, Test vice-captain - Sarfraz Ahmed to take over in ODIs

That's just as harsh as making Misbah keep wickets.

UA is not a WK; he was forced to keep.

We also need to remember that eeping was such a burden on Junior that his average and strike rate were both better than when he played as a specialist batsman.

Definitely, though his batting as a specialist batsman really didn't help his cause afterwards.

England are able to play that way because they have batting depth like I've never seen before. They've put out ODI teams where every member of the playing XI has scored multiple first class centuries.

Where are our bowlers who can bat that well? The guys batting at 9 or 10 for England would bat at 6 or 7 for us.

We can talk about changing the mindset or culture until we're blue in the face but none of it matters if we don't have the players.

They backed those players. It looks a solid team now but it was Eng vs NZ series that really set off this team on an ascend.

I am sure Pakistan have similar sort of players in domestic cricket. PSL is your best bet to find those prospective players. Anyway continuing with current players isn't going to do you any good. I don't think it matters if you lose scoring a 'respectable' 200-220 or get all out for 150 trying to play positively.

We can also have batting depth if we have Amir, Wahab and Sohail Khan coming in at 9,10 and 11 (all of whom have 50's in Test or ODI cricket)

However, I will emphasize again that quantity does not replace quality.

For all of England's depth - they have a world class player in Joe Root and high octane openers in Jason Roy/Hales along with one of the best modern day WKing batsman in Jos Butler.

Do we have such quality - well Babar is a high potential batsman along with Haris and Sharjeel is explosive but others? Not so much.

Sarfraz, Malik and Hafee are decent in asian conditions but not so much abroad.

Kammy is better than all three in any conditions. What is special about these three?? - Wacking spinner, anybody can do it, Kammy can wack seamers as well...

These three along with Azhar are the reason we are no 8, for us 260 is par score, you need to raise the standard. We have made Captaincy a full time job. Misbah is father figure for Pakistan and Islamabad, pretty much a non playing memeber, now Sarfraz will be such a member. Why the hell we need father figures when there are 10 members of support and coach staff?? 👺👺👺

Huh?

Kammy is not even competing with these 3 - I was talking about our lower order/tail in response to Big Mac who claims England has the most depth in batting.

England's batting depth is massively overrated and was completely exposed in the Indian tour.

Keep him catain till the world cup 2019 with babar azam as his deputy , after 2019 make babar azam the captain. He can captain pakistan for another 10 years , in the meanwhile he can improve his communication skills.

Yes, you need quality batsmen in the top 6 but the change in culture that you want happened because England packed the ODI team with guys who could bat. You can be more aggressive/fearless/adventurous/whatever when you know that the team bats down to 10, if not 11. You don't need to worry about what happens if you get out if you know that the whole team bats well, as opposed to a team like ours where the tail starts at 7 or 8.

You bring up Sohail, Wahab and Amir. They've got 17 fifties in first class and list-A cricket between the three of them with a top score of 84. Adil Rashid has 36 fifties and 10 hundreds in first class cricket with a top score of 180 and he bats at 9 or 10 for England.

It's not even close. We have guys who slog a bit and hope for the best, England have proper batsmen in their tail.

tbf he makes the side on merit as of now

not from what i have seen but i do have selective memory issues so maybe you're right.. its just that i don't see him scoring freely against better teams and i don't see him having the strike rotation capabilities neither does he have the power to muscle boundaries but that again is my opinion.

with Sharjeel likely banned for the long haul, Azhar will be dead set starter now

No..."It was decided in a meeting a day after Azhar resigns between Shaharyar, Inzi and Micky that azhar is not fit for odi's and it was mutually agreed that Shehzad should be recalled seeing his rich form in domestics and all other failed players will not be tolerated further rather domestic performers like Tabish and Asif Zakir should be given chance.( but don't know for tests or odi's are these two being considered) And they are also trying to convince Younis khan for test captaincy for short period until Sarfaraz settles in Odi's"..... Now with Sharjeel almost gone i think Fakhar or Shahzaib will be considered to partner shahzad in Odi's becoz there are no other obvious options.

that makes no sense, if anything it will make things harder for azhar as he wont have sharjeel there to mask his slow starts
