This really explodes the absurd claim that geriatric batsmen are somehow needed to "guide" the youngsters!

The following innings were in the same matches against the same bowlers with the same balls.

Sample length: 2 years 7 months
Sample Size: 5 Tests, 9 innings

v Ireland away
Azhar Ali 4 and 2
Faheem Ashraf 83 and did not bat

v England away
Azhar Ali 50 and 4
Faheem Ashraf 37 and did not bat

v England away
Azhar Ali 2 and 11
Faheem Ashraf 0 and 3

v South Africa away
Azhar Ali 0 and 15
Faheem Ashraf 0 and 15

v New Zealand away
Azhar Ali 5
Faheem Ashraf 50 not out

Azhar Ali
5 matches
9 innings, 93 runs
0 hundreds, 1 fifty
Average 10.33

Faheem Ashraf
5 matches
7 innings, 188 runs
Average 31.33
0 hundreds, 2 fifties

I hope that this shuts up both those people who idealise "seniority" and those people who belittle Faheem Ashraf.

In those 5 Tests Faheem also has 12 wickets at an average of 27.25, by the way.

Good comparison mate, should shut most including the so called "dumb" management who keep on persisting with these tried and trusted failures like Azhar, Haris and Yasir

Worse still.

Azhar has 6 innings out of 9 under TEN runs, plus a 11 and a 15 and a 50. Azhar has reached 20 ONCE in those 9 innings.

Faheem has 3 innings out of 7 under TEN runs, plus a 15 and a 37 and a 50 not out and a 83. Faheem has reached 20 THREE times in 7 innings.

They wil never shut because they don't understand

Wrong comparison although Azhar has underperformed he bats at 3 vs 7/8 for Faheem how would Faheem do at batting at number 3?

You aren't even taking into consideration that Azhar Ali is facing top class bowlers with the new ball.

Bhai Junaid and his hate for oldies, maybe he should leave his doc job as well because i guess he is also 50 plus now, so being a doctor with slow reflexes and potential other old age mental ailments can't affect his decision making. First do this than we can talk. Only criteria which should be looked is performance, because it's not age group cricket. So I hope we don't further derail quality of this forum with this age obsession, he is otherwise very knowledgeable and good poster wish he could get rid of this age obsession and make his arguments only on basis of performance.

He over exaggerates his point. Let's see if Faheem can perform like this for a sustained period before doing banghra over his performances.

I really like Azhar he just recently scored a magnificent 100 follwed up bt a decent half century in 2nd inns at Southampton where our beloved & golden boy Babar Azam failed, I'm not trying to say in anyway that Azhar is better than Babar but this was Azhar's 1st inns after Southampton test, so we need to stick with him. We should get rid of Haris he's useless.

Azhar Ali in Tests outside Asia since Misbah and Younis retired (2 years 5 months ago, when he was 33 years old).

8 Tests
14 innings, 13 times dismissed
303 runs
AVERAGE 27.54
1 century
1 fifty
7 scores below 10
10 scores out of 14 innings of less than 20.

The innings at Southampton is meaningless - it was an easy wicket on which only 22 wickets fell in 5 days and 330 overs. For goodness sake, Zak Crawley made 267 which was his 5th century in 46 First Class matches, and even Jos Buttler scored 152, which was his 7th century in 112 First Class matches.

More to the point, the admirable Azhar has failed to even reach double figures in 7 of his last 14 away Test innings. That would be unacceptable even for a Number 8 batsman, let alone a Number 3.

Even the nicest, most admirable men lose out to Father Time in the end. Azhar lost that battle almost 3 years ago.

Bhai Khuda ka Khouf karo. It has just been 1 test innings today after ages where Faheem has played well. Let him perform like this for next 5-6 tests before starting to hype him.

Statements like "he has reached 20 runs 3 times" are laughable to be honest.

You are totally missing the point.

Faheem Ashraf is only marginal in terms of being a good enough batsman to bat at Number 8.

The purpose of this thread is to show that mediocre guys aged 26 will generally outperform formerly good players who are now about to turn 36 years of age.

It's outrageous that any Test team - even Zimbabwe or Afghanistan - would continue to select a 36 year old Number 3 who has scored 93 runs in 5 Tests while Faheem Ashraf has scored 229 runs in two fewer innings in the same matches against the same bowlers.

That's the point of this thread.

I got the point now. This thread has more to do with Azhar and other oldies than Faheem but the title could have been different to reflect that. Yes Azhar has regressed beyond words and doesnt deserve a place in the squad based on past 2 years performances.

Sorry, I meant no offence.

I like fast bowling all-rounders - I think they are like gold outside Asia.

I think Faheem Ashraf has a pretty good Test match temperament: after 5 Tests all outside Asia he averages 27 with the ball and 33 with the bat, which is absolutely superb.

But I still think Amad Butt is better.
