BABAR AZAM TO PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AT EDGBASTON

Somerset County Cricket Club can today announce that Babar Azam will be in the squad as our overseas player for the upcoming Specsavers County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston which begins on August 18th.

Given the nature of the registration regulations, there isn’t time to de-register Babar Azam and re-register Azhar Ali in time for the fixture as Head Coach Jason Kerr explains. “You can only have two overseas players on the books at one time and due to the regulations, there simply isn’t the necessary time frame to re-register Azhar Ali,” he said. “Fortunately for us Babar Azam has agreed to play in our four-day game at Warwickshire which falls right in the middle of the Vitality Blast. If he hadn’t agreed, we would have been without an overseas player for that match.

“He’s fitted in really well and we’re all looking forward to seeing him play. Our philosophy is to build a home-grown side with the addition of world class players, and Babar Azam certainly fulfils that criteria. He’s one of the game’s rising stars and to have him in our side for that one-off game and for him to be a part of our family for the Vitality Blast can only bode well for us.

“Azhar Ali will return for the final three Specsavers County Championship matches which is great for us because he brings so much to the Club, both on and off the field. He’s an outstanding character and fully understands the situation. He wanted to put the team first and I have no doubt that he will make significant contributions for us at the back end of the season.”

Considering Azhar's performances, they might want to just replace him for the remainder of the games anyway...

Nice. Don't understand this whole re-registering and de-registering thing but good move for Babar, Azhar Ali has been dreadful anyway.

Longer he stays overseas, he will get more experience , will improve self confidence and more importantly will improve his communication skill to make him future captain, in 2-3 years, not now.

He should give impressions that he’s a 4 day player. If he can do that, next year he’ll be having a chance to play a full season.

Unless he plays 4 day cricket, he ain’t improving his test career.

Give him the full season. This will improve his batting way more than the vitality blast.

If he does well, then for next season he should replace Azhar Ali, who has been a disaster.

beautiful .. smashingly beautiful ... need to get some more players there ... likes of harris sohail and imam ...

The match I think is less important. I think the fact that he will spend more time around a professional outfit and continue to learn about how to handle situations professionally will serve him well moving forward.
