Cape Town - Proteas captain Faf du Plessis believes that the Australian ball tampering that took place during the third Test at Newlands was worse than anything he did during the infamous 'Mintgate' scandal of 2016.

During a Test match in Hobart that year, Du Plessis was fined 100% of his match fee after the ICC found him guilty of attempting to illegally change the condition of the ball.

Cameras had shown Du Plessis sucking on a mint and then shining the ball with the saliva that he had generated from the mint.

It became a media circus as The Australian public turned on the South African skipper.

During the Newlands Test, it was Aussie captain Steve Smith's turn to go through a similar grilling.

Smith has been banned for the fourth Test at the Wanderers after admitting on Saturday that he was deeply involved in an intricate plan to rough up the ball and aid reverse swing on day three.

Cameron Bancroft was the man tasked with executing the plan, but cameras caught him in the act and it resulted in an emotional post-day confession from the 25-year-old opener and his captain.

Bancroft received three demerit points and will be available for the Wanderers Test, with Smith on the receiving end of almost all of the global criticism.

Du Plessis, when asked to compare this to what he went through in 2016, felt that the situations were different.

"For me, yes," he said when asked if Smith's infringement was worse.

"Ball shining versus ball tampering are two very different situations and one is much more serious than the other.

"It's so difficult to say which is right and which is wrong. I think he is trying to take responsibility, so there is right in that. But there is also right in people being responsible for their own actions."

Du Plessis avoided a ban in Australia and scored a century in the next Test - South Africa won the series 2-1 - but he did empathise with the Aussie skipper.

"I can understand it's a really tough time for him to be in right now," Du Plessis said.

"The situation that I was in was really difficult for me as well because people were attacking me and my personality and character. I felt it was wrong and not fair. I don't know how he feels about his own personal situation but I can imagine it's a very tough time."

Du Plessis was not so sure that the reaction to the Smith/Bancroft incident was being blown out of proportion.

"When I was in Australia it felt like the same," he said.

"I was being followed everywhere I went, so the media for me looked the same as what it does now."

South Africa, meanwhile, took a 2-1 series lead on Sunday after taking 10 wickets in the final session to win by 322 runs.

For the captain, that is all that matters.

"For me, personally, the cricket takes all the glory and the shine with the way we played," he said.

2016 was not the first time Du Plessis has been involved in ball tampering.

In Dubai in 2013 during a Test match against Pakistan, the 33-year-old was fined 50% of his match fee after rubbing the ball against the zip on his whites.

He's being quite selective haha. But man I feel so sorry for Steve Smith and co, the way this has been portrayed it's as if he has commited murder, and his whole life has been turned upside down in 24 hours. I wouldn't take captaincy away from him, but that point is arguable. However, talks of CA possibly giving a life ban, that is OTT. A ban of 1-2 games will suffice, I'm pretty sure after this event they wouldn't dare think about trying anything like this again. If captaincy was taken away from him, It is probably unlikely, but would be good if they accepted Michael Clarke's offer of captaincy as he comes across as a man who could restore some of the lost dignity.

He’s Talking nonsense because whether you are shinning the ball using mints or scratching it or using a foreign object you are altering the condition of the ball.

He shouldn’t take some moral high ground either - infact since tampering in many forms is so common no one should.

Smith and Bancroft got rightly fully punished because it was so stupid bringing a foreign object to tamper the ball - it reeks of desperation because they were behind the game. They embarrassed their nation.

But like Mike Atherton keeps saying there are so many grey areas on this subject so let’s not vilify the Australians as the bad guys while everyone else are angles.

The Australian Cricket team does though need to reflect on some of their poor behaviour on and off the field. It may have needed something like this to make the change.

Ohhhhhh!! Most entertaining series in a while when Faf is taking moral high ground :))

Whether one uses mints, lip gloss, chewing gum in ones mouth , hair gel etc it's the same thing. The ICC needs to be consistent or let the players get on with it.

Better yet, let empires shine the ball after overs as per instructions of the captain. All the drama gone.

It's still using a foreign object to change the condition of the ball in your favour. Still wrong.

You know things are real bad when Faf du Plesis preaches about ‘Ball Tampering’

That dude have been caught tampering the ball with zippers and here he is preaching about moral ground.

Irony died a thousand deaths :faf

You forgot the zippers :broad

That's a good idea actually, never thought of that. Very simple fix.

South Africans are the biggest temperers of the ball from long time. Cheat of highest order.

He's absolutely right. Pouring your spit on a ball to clean it is A-okay, just not if you chew some gum, have some Gatorade or a mint? Honestly, use some common sense. It's moronic to equate that with an abrasive object meant to physically deform a cricket ball.

Absolute riddicoulous comments from Faf. The whole world knows what you did. Despite repeat offences he still got a light ban. Using a zipper isn't shinning the ball.

Very smart of Faf to cite the mint incident and completely skip the zippergate incident as if it never happened. Of course, the latter happening against Pakistan never helped as it failed to garner any publicity. Had it happened against any of the big 3 Faf chacha would have been reminded about it till eternity.
Props to the Ozzie public. They are completely aghast with what happened and want strong actions against Smith and co. The South African crowd that booed Smith yesterday would do good by looking closer home and applying the same standards to Faf.

Well, there are no saints in cricketing world either. Faf has got away of it twice.

Smith, on other hand, has made a fool of himself with it. It is still hard to understand why he brought the leadership group in this context? It looks like the whole Australian cricket team (the ones that matter the most) were involved in the planning and that has what led to people all around in Australia hating them.
