"Ban players involved in corruption forever, don't even let them play domestic cricket" : S Afridi

DUBAI: Former captain and Peshawar Zalmi all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi on Sunday called for a life ban for players who are involved in corrupting the game.

Speaking to Geo News, Afridi said that spot-fixing in Pakistan cricket would continue until Pakistan Cricket Board set an example by banning such players.

“These things will continue unless we make an example out of them (players involved in corruption). Ban cricket for them forever. Don’t even let them play domestic cricket. Only then you can stop such incidents”, Afridi said.

Star all-rounder said that the players know that even if they get caught, they will only have to undergo a five-year ban and then they can continue with their cricket.

Afridi further said that the player that were previously involved in spot-fixing were on the verge of making a comeback to the national squad, adding that certain people were trying to get them a place in the team.

PCB, on Friday, suspended two cricketers — Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan — for their alleged links with an international syndicate that attempted to corrupt the Pakistan Super League.

A formal charge sheet is being prepared by the PCB against the two national cricketers for spot-fixing in Pakistan Super League, reliable sources told geo.tv.

A highly-placed source told geo.tv on Sunday that the PCB has enough evidence that two cricketers agreed to spot fixing in meeting with the suspected bookie, who is named as Yousaf.

"We have good evidence against these two," said the source on condition of anonymity, adding that one player quickly reported the approach to the board while two others remained silence, but they didn't agree to the offer.

On Saturday, PSL chairman Najam Sethi said an inquiry into Sharjeel Khan and Khalif Latif being linked to an international syndicate trying to corrupt Pakistan’s T20 league will take 10-15 days.

“The matter will move forward after the inquiry is complete,” Sethi said.

Ban the likes of Afridi as well they have damaged Pak cricket more then the spot fixers.

What about himself who were bitting the ball, damaging the pitch and hitting the fan with the bat???

Ball/pitch tampering is nothing compared to fixing. You do those things for the team. Yes it's cheating but I find it hilarious when people compare it to fixing. Agree with afridi

Think too much presumption of guilt

And like any law, there are laws for each type and severity of offence.

He did that to win the match, massive difference even though it was stupid on the intentions both of them had.

Completely agree with him here. Life ban for anyone involved in any type of fixing, no exceptions. Many people will say, cricket is bread and butter for players so they should get second chances. If you want to feed your family by playing cricket, then respect the game. Playing cricket professionally (International or in any league) is a privilege not a right, so don't try to cheat cricket. Cricket does not need any players, cricket will survive without them, but players might not survive without cricket.

On side not, Afridi is being hypocrite here. Didn't he try super hard to get Amir back in Pakistan side as soon as 5 year ban was over?

well this is the worm turning isn't it? when many of us who claimed the trio should never play for pakistan again there was a wall of anger on these boards, now its suddenly all upside down.

What if future fixer is again 17 and young and naïve ?

Should he be treated with life ban too?

All of us make mistakes at 17 or 18.

Can't punish them for life.

Yes, he should be banned for life. If you make exception for one, you have to make exception for everyone after that. If you cheat you are done. And I still think Amir should have been banned for life, he was given chance to come out clean and become a witness for ICC. But Amir decided to lie, until there was no way out for him.
