Bangladesh, West Indies set to begin their CWC Super League campaigns
Ban v WI, 1st ODI, preview

At long last, Bangladesh will play international cricket again when they take on West Indies in the first ODI in Mirpur, ending a near nine-month wait due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Overview

Bangladesh v West Indies, 1st ODI
Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka
Wednesday, 20 January, 11.30am local time, 5.30am GMT

The excitement is therefore palatable in Bangladesh, ahead of what is expected to be a tough encounter against West Indies in a three-match ODI series, which is also part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

Tamim Iqbal, who was appointed the team captain in March, will finally get to lead his side on Wednesday, and Bangladesh will have a full-strength side to choose from, with Shakib Al Hasan returning after a ban and the Bangladesh Cricket Board naming an 18-member squad.

The squad comprised three uncapped players in Shoriful Islam, Mahadi Hasan and Hasan Mahmud, and it remains to be seen whether any of them makes the XI under Tamim’s captaincy.

Unlike Bangladesh, West Indies have been active on the field over the last few months. So much so that some players opted out of taking part on this tour, leaving Cricket West Indies to name a young side captained by Jason Mohammed, who last played for them in 2018.

It means plenty of West Indies players are likely to make their ODI debuts on Wednesday, in what is an opportunity for the youngsters to make their mark.

The series will see both sides begin their CWC Super League campaign.

Remember the last time:

The last time Bangladesh and West Indies clashed in an ODI was during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in Taunton in June 2019, Bangladesh coasted to a seven-wicket victory, after Shakib’s 99-ball 124* helped them chase down a 322-run target in just 41.3 overs.

What they said:

Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh captain): “These are not your usual series that it doesn't matter if you lose. Every game is important to qualify for the World Cup. We would like to ensure that we don't have to play the qualifying tournament, and we remain in top eight.”

Phil Simmons (West Indies coach): "We don't want to get into the playoffs anymore. To catch up in the series is going to be really hard, so we need to start well."

Interesting series . Odi Championship points for the taking. Is Shakib playing ?

WI squad is mostly unrecognizable. Bangladesh should win easily. It would've been a competitive series if WI had their first choice squad.

I just checked the WI squad and can't recognize anyone. Why have the WI sent such a unpopular squad?

All the main players pulled out of the tour because they felt uncomfortable about Bangladesh's covid situation.

Think the West Indian players pulled out of the tour more out of reluctance related to staying in another bubble rather than any particular concerns with the virus situation in Bangladesh.

We need to be flexible about these matters given the effect of quarantine on players.

Even this west Indies B team is going to beat them. Bangladesh is a mediocre team with mediocre players.

I checked the scorecard and i wasn't sure if its some WI-A team or U-19 team, because couldn't figure even one recognizable name in the squad.

WI 56/4 (18) CRR: 3.11
Bangladesh opt to bowl

Goodness me....what is this Windies team?

Not a single guy is an ODI regular.

Honestly, you cannot convince me that Covid and the bio-bubble BCB has proposed is the reason for so many top tier cricketers have opted out of the series

If it were BPL they'd all be here.

WI regressed so much.Against Bangladesh 115/7 in 30 overs. What will happen if they play against Ind/Eng/NZ?

Woeful performance so far by Windies.
122 for 9.

West Indies are all out for 122!

Shakib Al Hasan picks up the last wicket of Alzarri Joseph, returning brilliant figures of 4/8

Look at the the line-up, it’s not their regular side . It would be a stretch to even call this an A team.

It's pretty much a WI emerging side. Not one player in this lineup makes their first choice XI....maybe Alzarri Joseph. I dunno..

Shakib Al Hasan has picked up the best men's ODI figures by a Bangladesh bowler against West Indies (4/8).

Its 5 am in the morning here in canada just woke up to grab some water quickly opened cricinfo to see the score.....and my word windies bowled out for 122 nice job by bangladesh

Still 122 all out against Bangladesh is really poor score. If its against Eng/Aus/Ind/NZ main team than its understandable.
But don't think WI main team will be much different than this team because they cannot play spin at all. The real Problem with WI players is they are too greedy to leave national team for useless T20 or T10 leagues.

This is a pathetic WI team. WI cricket has showed a bit undersetimating attitude. But we are happy that international cricket is finally back.

Bangladesh is strong ODI side at home. Even SENA teams will struggle. Asian teams know how to play spin but still Bangladesh has started to give them tough time.
Unless West indies channel together some more courage, I don't see them winning anything with this team.

Shame on WI players they have openly decided to not play for WI and play only for money. They would be available if it was IPL or PSL or BPL.

Other teams should stop hiring their player for these league if they want to see WI team survive.

That's why these T20 leagues need to stopped. WI players are too greedy, our players are not that far.

Bangladesh are a very decent L/O side these days, not sure if it translates to test matches, but still impressive.

I myself do not like t20s, it is too fast paced and easy for my liking. However t20 leagues provides financial securities to many domestic and fringe players and also it does play a role changing the mindset of Asian parents by assuring that one can never play for the country and still make a very decent living playing cricket. Also we forumers are a minuscule part of the cricket fanbase, people this days by and large want readymade entertainment that is not time consuming and doesn't conflict with the 9-5 office timings. I am not even gonna go into details of how rookies can be benefitted by sharing dressing room with ATGs and how it makes them handle pressure better.

Also people often forget that Windies is not a country, it is a consortium of sorts. There is a difference between playing for your country and playing for your employer. Many who we call legends today ran off with kerry Packer chasing money and abandoning their national teams. My point is T20 cricket leagues whether we like or not is here to stay, it is absolutely essential for the survival of the game itself.

Point is WI as an international side would be much better if not for these T20 leagues. I understand competently due to the reasons you have given WI players were the easiest to crack for all these leagues.

Sadly Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka are teams who are really nosediving in terms of the quality of players coming through and their performances.

Cricket nowadays really is becoming a 2-tier set-up.

Pakistan will rise up again.

West indies have always been at the bottom while Lanka are struggling with the vacuum created due to key players leaving
