Bangladesh [154/3] defeat India [148/6] by 7 wickets to win 1st T20I, lead series 1-0

Lol, some Indians saying they didn't have a full strength side. Bangladesh didn't have Tamim, Shakib and Mohammad Shaifuddin (the guy who bowls all those yorkers and got Babar on 96 in the WC).

Rohit Sharma called for more patience while dealing with wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, after the latter's judgement on using the Decision Review System backfired on the team during their seven-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first T20I in Delhi on Sunday, 3 November.

India had two chances to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim cheaply in the ninth over, sent down by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. On two successive occasions in the over, the bowler and the close-in fielders appealed, the latter half-heartedly, for an lbw. With his players not showing much conviction, Rohit didn't opt for the reviews, but replays showed three reds on ball-tracking on both occasions.

Two balls later, Pant and Chahal appealed in unison against Soumya Sarkar for a caught behind, and the keeper convinced his captain for a review, only for the replays to show no deviation on snickometer. The Mushfiqur-Sarkar association yielded 52 more runs after the eventful over, with Rahim remaining unbeaten on 60 to seal a historic win for Bangladesh.

Rishabh is young and he will need time to understand. It's too soon to judge whether he can make those decisions.
Rohit Sharma

"Of course, Rishabh is young and he will need time to understand," Rohit said. "It's too soon to judge whether he can make those decisions. Plus, the bowlers as well. It's a combination when the captain is not in the right position to make that decision. When you are not in the right position [as a fielder], you have to trust your bowler and the wicket-keeper. Based on that, you have to make that decision, whichever format you play."

Though India could only manage 148, Rohit expressed satisfaction with the batting effort, and rued the missed opportunities on the field instead. "We would have defended 148 if we were smart on the field. A couple of decisions, we did not get it right on the field, and that went against us," he said. "That's where we lacked in decision making.

"It was a good, fighting total, but when you defend such a total, you need to keep taking wickets. But they had good partnerships, and that was the turning point."

Reflecting further on his team's bowling performance, Rohit said that the younger lot needs to develop their planning and approach while defending low totals in international cricket.

"These are the guys who did not play for a while in this format," he said. "These are bowlers who have been identified as the ones who can do well in this format. They have done reasonably well.

"They still need to understand that when defending smaller targets, they need to bowl according to the plan. They will learn by playing these games. They have the talent and ability to bounce back, but only time will tell if they can do that or not."

The first T20I between India and Bangladesh in New Delhi was on the verge of being cancelled due to extreme pollution levels in the city leading to visibility issues. But despite the health emergency in the capital, the match was given a go ahead by the officials. Now, the 2nd T20I between the two teams which is set to be played on Thursday (November 7) at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot could be disrupted due to prediction of severe cyclonic storm Maha in the city.

As per the weather forecast, the cyclone could heavy to very heavy rains in Saurashtra and South Gujarat in the coming days.

“Severe cyclonic storm Maha lay centred at 580 kilometres southwest of Diu and 550 kms southwest of Veraval. It is most likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and make landfall between Dwarka and Diu on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning with wind speeds of 120 kilometres per hour,” regional IMD director Jayanta Sarkar told PTI.

“The storm will cause heavy to very heavy rains in Saurashtra and south Gujarat on November 6-7. It is moving towards Oman but will recurve towards Gujarat coast on Monday,” he added.

With the storm predicted on the day of the 2nd T20I, the match could be abandoned. Commentator Harsha Bhogle took to Twitter to speak about the predicted cycline. “And now, with a game in Rajkot ahead, news of a cyclone on the West coast on Nov 06/07 with a danger alert issued to fishermen on the Saurashtra coast. Hope it isn’t dangerous for the people living there. The weather has been most unpredictable this year,” he wrote.

More than 25,000 crazy cricket fans paid little heed to public health emergency, thronging the Feroz Shah Kotla in large numbers to watch India play a T20 game against Bangladesh, braving the toxic air pollution in national capital. Alarmed by the dipping air quality, the state government had ordered shutting down of schools till November 5 but students were present in large numbers to watch their cricketing heroes in action. There were a few wearing anti-pollution masks but the number was insignificant compared to the ones who didn’t feel it necessary to use them.

'We had nothing to lose coming in, and that gives us great freedom' – Mushfiqur Rahim

After powering his side to their first-ever T20I win over India on Sunday, 3 November, Bangladesh wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim called the feat a 'great moment' and credited the team's youngsters for making it happen.

Rahim scored an unbeaten 60 off 43 balls, as Bangladesh successfully chased down India's 148/6 with seven wickets remaining. It was a special win, whose worth is accentuated by the fact that Bangladesh were missing two of their key players – Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal – in the contest. Now, Mushfiqur wants the side to reproduce all the good bits from their opening win in the rest of the series.

"It's a great moment for Bangladesh cricket because we had not won against them [India] in the T20 format before," he said. "And as you said, we were missing a couple of our key players [Shakib and Tamim] in our line-up, but I thought the way the young players have stuck together and the way our bowlers are bowling, especially against India, it's outstanding. They set up the game.

"We have come here to compete in each and every game. As long as you are playing consistent cricket and improving in each game – that is our main goal. After winning this game, we are surely looking forward to winning another game; hopefully, the next game. We had nothing to lose coming into this game and the whole series, so that gives us a great cushion and the freedom to play to our potential and a fearless brand of cricket."

Rahim added 60 runs for the third wicket with Soumya Sarkar, before striking four consecutive boundaries off Khaleel Ahmed in the 19th over to seize the game. The wicket-keeper batter was pleased that the chase went according to the plan.

When me and Soumya batted, we thought if one of us can stay till the 19th over, we can close the game," he said. "We just needed one big over, maybe 16 or 20 runs off it, and if there's a set batsman out there, that becomes quite easy. We had planned to go for an all-out attack in the last three overs, and I thought that 18th over was very crucial because Chahal is their main bowler in these conditions and we needed a few boundaries there and in the 19th. So I thought it all went the way we had planned."

Bangladesh bowled with great discipline after putting India in to bat and had them reduced to 120/6 in the 19th over, However, a late blitz by all-rounders Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya lifted them to 148/6 after 20 overs. Mushfiqur identified death bowling as one of the areas to improve in the coming games.

"We won, but there are a couple of areas we can improve in. In the last two overs, we gave away a couple of easy boundaries to them. We also need to close well with the ball. If we improve in those areas and play much better than what we did tonight, then I think there is nothing impossible in the next game. We will try our level best to compete against India."

Bangladesh have come close to winning against India in T20Is in the past, but have failed to cross the finishing line on each occasion, perhaps none more dramatic than the super 10 fixture of the ICC Men's World T20 2016, where they needed two off three, but lost back-to-back wickets to eventually fall short by one run. Rahim, who was a part of that finish, was pleased to be on the winning side this time around.

"It can happen to anyone, and when you have a career of 10-15 years, you can have such matches. We've also stayed there till the end and closed out games, and so that also adds to the confidence. In the last over, we just needed four runs, and I thought we were cruising. I had a chat with Mahmudullah to make sure and get some ones and twos because there was a lot of space on the on side.

"As long as you're learning from the mistakes, that's the most important part. After that incident, I've been able to close the game on three-four occasions for Bangladesh in both T20Is and ODIs, so that gives me a lot of confidence."

It was just a T20 game, gosh we still behave like a minnow.

Nonetheless, saw the game during last few overs, and the game seemed to be pretty good with decent crowds in.

Not sure, why brother Khaleel still getting countless chances?

BD usually wins a game against India once in 3 or 4 years..the last time they won was in 2015...before that in 2012 , 2007 and 2004..let's see if this continues..

Those stats may be quite deceiving, specially when it comes to ODIs. That last victory you mention in 2015 was the last bilateral series between the two countries which Bangladesh won 2-1. Since then there were just 4 ODIs in 4 years (Champions Trophy Semi, Asia Cup Group Stage & Asia Cup Final and World Cup group Stage). In terms of T20s - well we all know what happened in that World T20 match in 2016 and again in the Nidhahas Trophy final. I would say that there is definite merit in these two teams playing each other more often. Does produce far more interesting & even contests compared to an India-Pakistan game nowadays.

Very good win for BAN. Not sure why they didn't move the match to a different city. The conditions are quite hazardous according to news reports.

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal brushed aside the team's defeat to Bangladesh in the first T20 international in Delhi, saying that a three-match series affords enough time to bounce back.

Bangladesh beat India by seven wickets in the series opener on Sunday, chasing down a modest target of 149 with ease. It was their first victory over India in the shortest format.

"A couple of matches can go wrong, but there is no pressure from the management," Chahal said, ahead of the second game in Rajkot. "The only thing is that we shouldn't repeat the mistakes that we commit in any particular match."

The 29-year-old, who registered figures of 1/24 in the match, said that the team believes in itself to make a comeback in Rajkot. "It is not about pressure. It is a three-game series, not a knockout game, so obviously one will win, one will lose, and that day they played better than us," he said. "We are one down and still two matches to go, and obviously if we believe in ourselves, we will come back."

Though he has been a match-winner for India in the limited-overs formats over the last couple of years, Chahal said that he doesn't see himself as the leader of the bowling attack. "It's not like that. Among our bowlers, everyone has played 30-40 IPL matches. They have good experience. I have just played extra T20Is compared to them.

"It's too soon to judge whether he can make those decisions."

Rohit Sharma defended Rishabh Pant after his DRS calls came under scrutiny in India's seven-wicket loss to Bangladesh
"[In a match,] I can only bowl four overs. There are 16 more overs to be bowled. If the whole team as a unit bowls well, only then we will win. It's not a matter of one person."

The leg-spinner was also lavish in his praise for the opposition, who he thinks are a strong side despite the absence of their veterans Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan.

It is a three-game series, not a knockout game, so obviously one will win one will lose.
Yuzvendra Chahal

"Even without Shakib and Tamim, they are a decent team. They have some experienced players, even a couple of new guys did well. So we didn't think that since two players are missing, so they are a weak team."

The second T20I will be played on Thursday, 7 November.
