The Bengal Tigers began their campaign with a bang as they defeated Hong Kong by seven wickets. However, in their previous game against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh looked under pressure and suffered a six-wicket defeat. Meanwhile, Afghanistan is coming off a huge 94-run win over Hong Kong and will look to carry the same momentum forward.

It is a must-win game for Bangladesh, while Afghanistan can afford to lose. However, a win here for Afghans will render their game against Sri Lanka meaningless.

Trott challenges Afghanistan for more ahead of T20 World Cup

Jonathan Trott wants Afghanistan to build on their run at last year's T20 World Cup and continue to evolve as a team.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott believes confidence is growing within his side as he eyes success in the ongoing Asia Cup and next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Trott has lifted Afghanistan to new heights since taking the head coaching role back in 2022, with the side's unforgettable run to the semi-finals of last year's T20 World Cup displaying the capabilities of the emerging nation.

With a must-win clash against Bangladesh at the Asia Cup on the horizon in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and less than six months until the next edition of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Trott has challenged his side to continue to evolve and create even more memories on the big stage.

"Since I've been with the side, we've had some memorable moments," Trott recalled.

"I think back to when we beat Bangladesh in a 50-over series in Bangladesh for the first time (in 2023). It had never been done before, and given how strong Bangladesh have been at home, to go there and do that gave us a lot of confidence and positivity.

"Then there was the win in St Vincent at the (2024) T20 World Cup, which helped us qualify for the semi-final. That was such a tight, historic game, and it gave us great belief. This group I'm currently working with is not shy about achieving new things or breaking new ground.

"Whenever there's something that hasn't been done before, like a big obstacle or a big challenge, this Afghan side rises to the occasion. They're not only setting new standards for themselves but also paving the way for future players to keep pushing those boundaries."

One of Afghanistan's current strengths is their depth of quality spin bowlers, with skipper Rashid Khan and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi the mainstays alongside fellow tweakers Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and AM Ghazanfar.

Trott knows exactly how important good spinners can be when playing on the sub-contient and wants to use this to his advantage going forward ahead of the T20 World Cup at the start of next year.

"Right now, we have a great opportunity with the Asia Cup. Looking a bit further ahead, with the World Cup coming up in February, we have good memories of playing in the sub-continent - in Sri Lanka and India," he added.

"It can be tempting to look too far ahead, but for now, Bangladesh (at the Asia Cup) is at the forefront of everyone's mind, and we're focused on winning that game."

This is going to be feisty. Bangladesh need to increase their batting depth. This 6-5 combination is way too dependent on top order. They need to go with 7-4 combination, similar to what SRL does. Also, multiple changes need to occur for this match.

I will go with: bold are changes
1. Parvez Hossain
2. Saif Hassan(Spin/Bat)
3. Litton
4. Nurul Hasan
5. Jaker Ali
6. Shamim Hossain(Spin/Bat)
7.Nasum Ahmed
8. Mahedi Hasan
9.Tanzim Sakib
10. Taskin
11. Fizz

BD miscalculated the imp of RR in this group by chasing slowly agaisnt HKC. They needed to win it within 14 overs which was possible
Bangladesh is playing a test match combination in a T20 match. 6+5 is never going to win big match or nor finished the match early.

Pakistan player's don't have much power game as well apart from one -two player

:kp

Yeah, thats one thing I agree with you. 6-5 combination will be in big trouble if couple of early wickets fall. They have to go with 7-4 combination.

Afg is also same

They win because of Great Spinners if they win

They'd be unstoppable with these changes. Afghans should be very wary.

Bangladesh has never won a T20I against Afghanistan outside their home soil. Can they win the 1st one today??

The last match these two teams had at the T20 World Cup was quite entertaining. Bangladesh play better against Afghanistan then they do against other Asian teams, but I expect Afghanistan to win. Their top order is firing, and the bowling attack is far more versatile, with more depth.

I think Bangladesh's best chance is to get a decent total on the board because Afghanistan are not a good chasing team.

Equations:

- If BD beat Afghanistan and SL beat Afghanistan, BD and SL are through to Super Four.
- If BD beat Afghanistan and Afghanistan beat SL, NRR comes into play.
- If Afghanistan win today, both SL and Afghanistan are through to Super Four.

Do or die game for Bangladesh.

Afghanistan has one more chance but I fancy they probs dont wanna get into a RR battle

I think Afghanistan will win. I'll support Bangladesh though cause it'll make the group stages more interesting with a 3 way war between Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka but my gut feeling is Afghanistan will win today.

Otherwise idc about these 2 sides

Afghans are just so much more masculine and warlike. Even the anthem sounds so Islamic and uncompromising unlike that BD anthem

bng will carry that mirpur pitch wherever they play.Am really perplexed with what kind of power hitting they have gone through.

Afg released all the pressure that was build up. And not to mention 2 dropped catch. Deserves this at this point ...

Who is this Saif Hasan? He doesn't seem like he has the skills and it's clearly showing. Why did they send him to open?

LOL. He can hit well. Better technique than Emon.

He can also bowl part-time spin.

Here are some of his previous good scores:

Akram calling outfielder as "keeper done a good job".

In Sunday match he said " excellent partnership of 37 runs from just 34 balls".

is he fine ?

I guess having an off day today then. But that new Tamim is a pretty good batsmen. Give him couple more years, I predict he will become a better batsmen than the Sr Tamim

  • Seems a good match is developing now.
  • Afghanistan's poor fielding cost them some wickets/runs.
  • Hoping to see a good contest today.
