A former army officer convicted of killing Bangladesh's independence leader in 1975 has been executed.

Abdul Majed was hanged in the capital Dhaka after his appeal for presidential clemency was rejected this week.

He was arrested on Tuesday after spending 25 years on the run for the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Rahman - the father of the current prime minister, Sheikh Hasina - was killed during a military coup in 1975, along with most of his family.

His death came just four years after Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan.

Masjed continued to live in the country after the coup but it is believed he fled to India in 1996 when Mrs Hasina was elected prime minister.

Her government overturned a law protecting her father's killers from prosecution, and in 1998 Masjed and a dozen other army officers were sentenced to death.

Bangladesh's supreme court upheld the verdict in 2009 and five of the killers were executed soon afterwards. Masjed was arrested after returning to the country last month.

Here's the reason why Mujeeb got assassinated:

He was later elected President of Bangladesh and established a national unity government, the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League (BAKSAL), on 7 June 1975 by banning all political parties and independent press. Although the BAKSAL was intended to bring stability to Bangladesh and uphold law and order, it engendered hostility among the bureaucracy, military, and civil society. Opposition groups, as well as some of Mujib's supporters, challenged Mujib's authoritarian, one-party state.[2] The period of the BAKSAL's one-party rule was marked by widespread censorship and abuse of the judiciary, as well as opposition from the general populace, intellectuals, and all other political groups.[3] The country was in chaos: corruption was rampant, and food shortage and poor distribution led to a disastrous famine. Nationalization of industry failed to yield any tangible progress. Not only was the government weak and with no clear goals, but the country was also nearly bankrupt. In the Far Eastern Economic Review, journalist Lawrence Lifschultz wrote in 1974 that "the corruption and malpractices and plunder of national wealth" in Bangladesh were "unprecedented".

The way I see it, Mujeeb got assassinated for being a dictator. Hasina should learn from history.

Isn't she elected, people should throw her if she is wrong in next elections

LOL.

Her thugs literally take out all opponents. She won but it wasn't a fair election.

The fact Khaleda Zia (opposition leader) was in prison was a disgrace.

Lol. Sounds just like her West Bengali counterpart Momta didi. :))

Okay so there is no fair election in Bangladesh, I did not know this

The election in Bangladesh is as fair as it is in other parts of subcontinent if not more.

Hasina is ofcourse not liked by a significant chunk because she has ruthlessly shut down radical elements in the society , something that her neighbours can learn from her. Ofcourse she is vengeful to her family's murderers, hence you see such misinformation being promoted particularly by those who have supported the killing her family.

That's not true. There are many cases of forced disappearances of opposition politicians.

You can check this video for a perspective:

I am aware. She is giving payback and beating them on their own game which they started decades back.
