Absolutely stunned to hear this. The BD players were about to enter the mosque for Jummah prayers when a lady warned them about a shooting.

Reports are 5 people are dead.

The Bangladesh players initially hid inside their team bus and according to the Daily Star, none are injured.

NZ is the last place where one would expect something like this!

I live in Christchurch and all the schools have been locked down its crazy. Hearing so many different things.

Last thing i would expect here.

NZ is the last country you would expect something like this. Just 4 million people. Absolutely shocking stuff! Hope you and everyone else is safe as it looks like the gunman is still on the loose!

Hope everyone is okay. This reminds me of the incident that happened to SL team and because of that Pak is still struggling because no team wants to visit. I hope after seeing this international teams become more considerate and understand these things can happen anywhere.

Its very very bad and im disgusted this would ever happen here. Im in shock so i cant begin to imagine how people there are feeling.

I’m at Brisbane Airport about to fly out to Singapore.

And the Aussie media is finally acknowledging that it’s an Aussie.

(For those of you unfamiliar with this part of the world, New Zealand is socially progressive and proudly multicultural whereas , whereas outside of Melbourne those values are less widespread in Australia).

Can’t really compare Pakistan to New Zealand. The security situation of both countries are completely different.

But its not. An untoward incident can happen anywhere and unfortunately that is what we have just seen. Hopefully everyone is fine. There is just too much hate in this world!

Glad to know the BD team is safe.
Hopefully they will continue the tour and NZ doesn't have to suffer like pak did for the past 10 years.

I can't imagine how they would want to stay there after being so close to an incident like that. Should go back home, cricket can wait

Absolutely disgusted.

Never thought anything like this could happen in NZ.

Darkest day in NZ's history.

• Dozens feared killed as at least two gunmen open fire at two central Christchurch mosques

• City in lockdown, with reports of a third shooting scene and a car bomb in Strickland St

• One gunman, believed to be Australian, filmed as he shot victims in the mosque - and wrote a manifesto declaring his intentions

• Teen witness: "I just ran as fast as I could, over the fence to Hagley Park, I didn't stop. The gunshots sounded like pop, pop, pop...I heard over 50."

27 people dead.... was this racially driven or was the man a nutter? May be the case considering he live streamed it..

The third cricket test between the Black Caps and Bangladesh in Christchurch is set to be called off after a shooting at a nearby mosque this afternoon.

The shooting happened just minutes away from Hagley Oval, where the test was set to be held, and the Bangladesh cricket team narrowly avoided the incident, having to flee the scene.

The team had just arrived at the Al Noor Mosque for Friday prayer when a gunman opened fire.

Video showed several Bangladeshi players and media escaping the scene.

A Black Caps spokesperson has told the Herald New Zealand Cricket CEO David White will call off the third test shortly.

Mohammad Isam, a Bangladeshi journalist for Cricinfo who was on the scene, said that all the players are safe, but want to fly back to Bangladesh.

"I don't they're in a mental state to play cricket at all. I think they want to go back home as soon as possible. I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard.

"Everyone is at the Hagley Park dressing room ... two players are back at the hotel. They didn't come out for the prayers so they are back at the hotel and the entire coaching staff are safe."

Isam described the scenes.

"When that was happening, one of the players had called me to contact the police. I'm new in Christchurch, I didn't know who to contact. I just got on someone's car and just we went near that place and it was very traumatic.

"It was very traumatic there and people were running out from that mosque presumably, and the Bangladesh players were coming out. They (the players) are in terrible and severe mental [distress], they're not feeling well.

"They were just outside the mosque about to get off from the bus and go into the mosque when they heard shooting and a lot of people running out and they saw someone wounded in front of them.

"And seeing that, they didn't get off the bus. About ten minutes later they ran out of the bus and ran through Hagley Park and into the Hagley Oval."

Bangladesh Cricket confirmed that all their team members are now safely back in the team hotel.

Bangladesh's strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen said the players were shaken up.

"I spoke to one of them shortly after [the incident]. They didn't see anything but heard gunshots. They were at the ground [Hagley Oval] and just started running.

A member of the Black Caps staff told the Herald the team were having an optional training session at Lincoln, about 30 minutes away from Hagley Oval.

A Black Caps spokesman told the Herald nine of the team members live in Christchurch and are currently at home with their families.

The players have been told to stay indoors and a planned meeting at the team hotel was cancelled.

New Zealand Cricket have also been in contact with members of the Australian under-19 women's team, who are also in Christchurch.

According to a spokesman, the players from all the teams are safe and accounted for.

If the test is cancelled, it would be the first time a test held in New Zealand has been called off.

Two tests have previously been abandoned due to rain, while three tests overseas involving New Zealand have been cancelled due to terror attacks. The most recent was a bombing in Karachi in 2002, which saw the second of two tests against Pakistan cancelled before a ball could be bowled.

Herald rugby writer Christopher Reive is reporting the Super Rugby match between the Chiefs and Hurricanes in Hamilton will go on as planned 'for the time being'.

And since the perpetrator was Aussie, include Australia in the ban as well.

Pray tell why is Pakistan only unique when these incidents can happen in any country.
Ban cricket everywhere, nowhere is safe. Monsters in every country.

Wow.... Hazim Arafeh, the Federation of Islamic associations of NZ is saying at least 100 people dead.......

27 people dead.... was this racially driven or was the man a nutter? May be the case considering he live streamed it..

Oh yeah since the attacker wasn't a Muslim then of course he had to be a nutter. This person is nothing but an extremist racist white terrorist.

I hope cricket does not suffer because of this incident. Heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Did not expect this to happen in New Zealand at all.
The Bangladesh cricket team is safe at the moment but 27 people (maybe more) have passed away which is heartbreaking. I am living in Auckland, Inshallah this won't happen again and won't happen in any other city.

Terrible news.NZ wasnt a place i would have expected something like this from.

Glad to hear the players are safe.RIP to the victims.

The New Zealand mosque shooter reportedly livestreamed the shooting on Facebook. In the video, he reportedly told people to subscribe to PewDiePie.

Clown, I hope he's severely punished.

can people stop talking about cricket? CRICKET does NOT MATTER. In absolute shock atm

RIP to the victims. People are people wherever they live in the world, that includes good folks and evil folk as well. Good to hear the players are safe.

Wow.... Hazim Arafeh, the Federation of Islamic associations of NZ is saying at least 100 people dead.......

Please share me a link to where you found this. I tried to look in the FIANZ website but couldn't find anything related to the shooting

From the shooters manifesto

28 year old man born Aus from low income family.

Target wasn't NZ initially, he wanted to show nowhere is safe in the world.

Not confirmed yet but I think this is what NZ reporters were referring to.

lets see if two face teams now stop touring NZ like they stopped touring Pakistan

Not the right time to be talking about cricket, but that hasn't stopped teams from touring India, Aus and England.

This reminded me of terror attack by Anders Breivik here in Norway 22 July 2011. That happend also on a Friday and schocked the whole country. When countries like Norway and NZ are not safe, no other country can be safe.

Journalists reporting the gunman was a white supremacist and has been planning the attack for 2 years.

Latest from the police:

4 people in custody (3 men, 1 woman), not aware of other people cannot assume not others at large.

Haven't identified those dead yet, phone lines being set up to help.

Every police and emergency resources being used, others being flown in. Doing everything they can to ensure there is no more harm.

Not classifying it as a terrorist attack yet, going to investigate before that.

Why did the tour stop? The guy did not target the cricket team.
Are you serious? How can anyone continue as normal after such an incident? If the reports of 100s killed and video is true, bangla players are extremely lucky no one got injured. They will have ptsd perhaps for life

I'm proud of how the Christchurch community and the police heave dealt with this, it could have been a lot worse. They've done their absolute best to control things, things could have been far worse.

Dude.. don't take it personally, this could have easily been a gudwara a lot of these morons can't tell the difference between muslims and sikhs.

Sorry but this guy was a definite Islamophobe.. He filmed it and uploaded it on social media.

Dad said the Indian media are making up things, apparently they're reporting firing still going on...

Mate I hope you and your loved ones are safe.

This is horrible. Right wing terrorism has been on the rise since forever perpetrated further by social media.

So will the police declare this a terrorist attack soon? From the manifesto it 100% appears to be one.

I'm starting to understand the frustration Muslims feel, when there's a muslim behind such incidents it's considered a terrorist attack while this is being a called a Mass Shooting.

Hundreds of people got killed in the mosque and you are weeping about tour. .get some life
I understand that but by calling off tour you basically let terrorist get what they want which is to inflict fear and terror.

40-50 people being reported to be dead.

The terrorist chose NZ to show that nowhere is safe.

The funny part is quite a bit of the Muslim countries are quite developed and rich like Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Malayasia, etc. However, we only hear about Afghanistan and Iraq in the news. Iraq too could’ve been developed but their political system was really bad.

Its such a beautiful country, was planning to tour there someday. Sad to hear such stuff happening over there as well.

I wonder how many such terrorists are roaming around in nations where security apparatus is lax.

In the immediate aftermath, details and stuff are sketchy. Law enforcement, politicians, and media have responsibility (professionally and morally) to not jump to judgement.

Most of the media are fairly fair in this regard.

The problem is with right wingers and the conversation in the days and weeks after. They will say this guy is mentally ill. I've read much of his manifesto already and I will concur this guy has serious mental issues. But if its a Muslim or ethnic minority, he can have no mental issues or other health problems.

The terrorist uploaded a manifesto to social media which confirmed it. the media is still not calling it that AFTER reporting they were white supremacists and targeted muslims at two mosques.

By not calling it a terrorist attack does it reduce fear in the local populace? Because it's scary when you call one of your own a terrorist, when it is a Muslim attacker they call them a terrorist because they are still viewed as supposed "outsiders'. I'm just trying to understand the thinking.

Can you give us authentic and derailed information as per NZ media regarding the incident

The sad thing here is this could have been avoided if someone reported this guy to the police. He was posting about it online for days..

The media must call it a terrorist attack. Lots of people dead. If this is not terror, what is?

Wow simply wow.

Very unfortunate
A dent for NZ as country and cricketing nationa

Will do.

He had been posting about the attack on twitter for days. Showing his gear and guns (one of them isn't even legal in NZ).

Posted on 4 Chan before he left..
