Because then they'd have to dispense with the notion that only Muslims are terrorists and when waging war on terror, they wouldn't be only bombing Muslims. It's a very convenient way to be selectively bigoted.

Yes that could be one of the reasons. But I also thinks it helps in downplaying fear, because when one of your own is a terrorist how do you cure that problem? If it's a Muslim they can say let's ban immigration from these countries and such incidents will reduce, but when it's one of your own then what do you do?

Fair enough. But it still has to be verified and there is protocol.

If things are as it seems, and its not being called a terrorist attack 12, 24, etc hours from now, then yes. But there have been times that muslim caused attacks weren't initially called terrorist attacks. I'm not talking about Fox News or right wing media, I'm talking about credible media outlets only.

Terrorism irrespective of religion has been a long standing problem across the world for some time now. But most government's have been guilty of taking only a one sided view of it, there is no doubt about that.

There are "multiple fatalities" after shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch, police in New Zealand have confirmed.

Three men and one woman are in custody, police commissioner Mike Bush told a news conference.

Witnesses told local media they ran for their lives, and saw people bleeding on the ground outside the Al Noor mosque.

Authorities advised all mosques to shut down until further notice. All Christchurch schools are on lockdown.

In a statement to the nation, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said details were not yet clear, "but I can tell you now - this will be one of New Zealand's darkest days".

Mohan Ibrahim, who was in the area of the Al Noor mosque, told the New Zealand Herald: "At first we thought it was an electric shock but then all these people started running.

"I still have friends inside.

"I have been calling my friends but there are many I haven't heard from. I am scared for my friends lives."

It is not yet known how many shooters there were, but the Herald reports that one gunman is believed to be an Australian who has written a manifesto outlining his intentions. In it, he espouses far-right ideology and anti-immigrant ideology.

Unverified footage purportedly taken by the shooter has emerged, suggesting he filmed as he shot victims. Police called on the public not to share the "extremely distressing" material online.

What happened at the mosques?
The sequence of events remains unclear and has mostly come via eyewitness reports to local media.

Witnesses at the Al Noor mosque, located in central Christchurch along Deans Avenue, facing Hagley Park, reported seeing people bleeding on the ground outside the building.

One unnamed survivor told TV New Zealand he saw a gunman shoot a man directly in the chest. He estimated that the shooting lasted for 20 minutes and that up to 60 people may have been injured.

The gunman reportedly targeted the men's prayer room in the mosque, then moved to the women's room.

"What I did was basically just waiting and praying, God please, let this guy run out of bullets," the witness said.

"He came to this side, he shot this side, he went to another room and went to the ladies' section and shot them. I just heard one of the ladies has died."

A Palestinian man who did not wish to be named told AFP news agency he saw a man shot in the head, and heard rapid gunfire.

"I heard three quick shots, then after about 10 seconds it started again - it must have been an automatic, no one could pull a trigger that quick.

"Then people started running out. Some were covered in blood."

A second mosque in the suburb of Linwood has also been evacuated, and the police commissioner said "multiple fatalities" were recorded at two locations. There are far fewer details emerging from there, however.

How are the authorities responding?
A spokeswoman said Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) has activated its mass casualty plan, according to New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz.

The plan includes clearing emergency room space for casualties. The spokeswoman did not comment on how many patients were expected.

Police earlier cleared Cathedral Square, where thousands of children were holding a rally for action on climate change.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said: "Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high.

"Police recommend that residents across Christchurch remain off the streets and indoors until further notice."

Parents have been told not to go to schools to collect their children. New Zealand Police tweeted: "There is no timeframe at this stage for when the lockdown will be lifted. The children are being taken care of by schools."

Who has been caught up in the attack?
As well as the numerous witness reports of casualties, the Bangladesh national cricket team appear to have narrowly escaped the shooting.

A reporter following the team, who were due to play New Zealand in a now-cancelled test match on Saturday, tweeted that the team had "escaped from a mosque near Hagley Park where there were active shooters".

Player Tamim Iqbal tweeted that the "entire team got saved from active shooters".

Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman Jalal Yunus said most of the team had gone to mosque by bus and were about to go inside when the incident took place.

"They are safe. But they are mentally shocked. We have asked the team to stay confined in the hotel," he told the AFP news agency.

I contacted the journalist of one of the biggest papers here in Norway and asked him why this was not termed as a terrorist attack.

He replied that he personally thinks it is a terrorist attack but they can’t use this term before the authorities use this term and they need to know what the attacker wanted to achieve. [MENTION=132954]Aman[/MENTION]

That makes sense, they've basically been alluding to it being a terrorist attack with the terms and things they've said.

I found this on twitter, the news channels here said/showed similar quotes.

The terrorist had uploaded a manifesto to Twitter, it's been taken down since then but i saw this posted by another person on twitter.

I feel for Space Cat, his city has gone through so much. This is the last thing it needed after the earthquakes.
 
This horrific incident should not be used for point scoring.

In my opinion, it was the right step to call off the 3rd Test.
 
Do we know if the BD cricket team was targeted? Maybe the attacker seen BD players attend mosque on previous Fridays. In any event, players should be extremely carefull when attending mosques in UK, Australia, RSA, or NZ as well as their own country.

Hagley Oval Test cancelled

A joint decision has been taken by NZC and the BCB to cancel the third Test match due to start tomorrow at Hagley Oval.

Both groups of players and support staff are safe and secure.

NZC would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those affected by the shocking situation in Christchurch.

Arrangements are being made for the return of the Bangladesh team home as soon as possible.

A decision has also been made to cancel the two remaining fixtures between the New Zealand Development team and Australia’s U19 women’s team that were due to take place over the weekend at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

“We are shocked and appalled as I am sure all New Zealanders are,” said NZC CEO David White.

“We are offering support to all those within the teams affected by the situation and are continuing to take advice from authorities on the ground.”

The third Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh in Christchurch has been called off following a shooting incident in the city on Friday, 15 March.

New Zealand Cricket confirmed the players and staff of both teams were “safe and accounted for” before they released an official statement confirming the abandonment of the Test.

“On behalf of NZC, heartfelt condolences to those affected,” David White, the chief executive officer, said. "We've cancelled the game. I've spoken to my counterpart at Bangladesh cricket – we agree it's inappropriate to play cricket at this time."

"Both teams are deeply affected,” White said. "As a country, we'll have to look at [security of visiting teams]. It seemed to be a safe haven. I'm sure all of New Zealand will take a look at their approach."

The decision to call off the match has been supported by David Richardson, the ICC chief executive. “Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by this horrendous incident in Christchurch,” he said.

“Both teams, staff and match officials are safe, and the ICC fully supports the decision to cancel the Test match.”


The BCB also released a statement, confirming their players were back at the team hotel. “All members of the Bangladesh cricket team in Christchurch, New Zealand are safely back in the hotel following the incident of shooting in the city.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is in constant contact with the players and team management and also with New Zealand cricket.”

The Christchurch Test was the third of the series. New Zealand won the first two Tests in Hamilton and Wellington.

Like for me this news isn't that shocking as I have seen such things happen on a daily basis in Pakistan.

Like when the APS attack took place, we just quietly went to school/collage/uni the next day, becasue we are used to it. Hence you cant bash some people here if they say why the tour stopped.

Yes, for some this attack was very surprising.

Attacks can take place anywhere. Cricket not happening in Pakistan is not because of attacks, its because of Law and order.

WHoever carried out the attack, if he is alive he will be charged and the stakeholders involved would be caught.

In Pakistan, the sri lankan team attackers or many otehr people invovled in Terrorism are never really caught. Even if they are, they are caught for just dramaybaazi, their organizations were never targetted.

We are basically a lawless country

Bangladeshi team's press conference was delayed by 10 minutes due to which they reached the mosque 10 minutes late. This saved them. Had this not been the case, it would have been catastrophic.

From what I know, life sentence here in New Zealand means 25 years ....

I just want to take a second to commend the compassion of the posters on this forum. Its really heartening to me after i have spent the past few hours trying to contact muslim members of my cricket club to see if they are ok. Its dreadful and i cant begin to imagine what the families of the victims are experiencing.

Unfortunately i made the mistake of browsing the cricinfo facebook page where commenters scarely made mention of the 49 victims and instead resort to bashing my country or to push their agendas which is just sad.

NZ is a small peaceful nation we have only had 1 terrorist attack in our entire history prior to this so we are just not prepared for something of this magnitude. The police here dont even carry fire arms in public. I guess we were naive to think it wouldnt happen here but i guess now in this modern world we can never be truely safe from evil. Thankfully the Bangladesh team are safe and i hope this never happens here again on any scale.

I cant imagine he would get any less than life without parole but our justice system has never actually sentenced somebody that strongly before. There is a murderer awaiting sentencing currently who could be the first in history to receive that sentence.

Its far too soft.

But you fortunately were not present during the actual attacks. If someone was there seeing bullets or bomb go off, can they just play as normal? If the players had been in their hotel rooms and just heard about the attacks like you did, that's different. Here they saw it and escaped with their lives

FICA Comment on Christchurch Attacks

FICA, on behalf of its members and cricketers around the world, sends its prayers and sympathies to the people of Christchurch following today's horrendous attacks.

The global cricket community was shocked to hear that the Bangladesh cricket team was so close to the incident.

FICA has been in contact with the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association and Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh and full support has been offered to the Bangladesh players and the touring squad on the ground.

Exceptionally soft and this won't deter people from taking up the path again. The guy will enjoy a comfortable life.

If I were a kiwi I would be ashamed of this guy was just going to get a mere life sentence and live in comfort of a prison.
 
When Bangladesh had terrorist problems in 2016. Government was quick to get rid of all kinds of terrorism. There were drives all of a sudden here and there and guess how many terror activity related deaths occurred ever since ? 0

Hence Bangladesh is toured by foreign countries and big players play in BPL.

One thing government did was they did arrested everyone related to any form of terror activity. I am sure they were questioned and eventually killed off. You can't have mercy for murderers. There is a quote in Lord of the Rings "show them no mercy for you shall receive none"
 
Absolutely horrendous news to wake up to. Prayers to the families of the deceased and my heart goes out to all those injured. I am glad the Bangladeshi players are ok and cricket can help with soothing some of the pain, however little that may be.

We shall see what happens as nothing like this has ever occured in NZ. I can assure you at the very least NZ prisons would not be a comfortable place for somebody with his views. I hope he is thrown in with the worst of them and left there.

I cannot imagine the consequences if our team was caught up in the attack. All lives matter no doubt but it would have had some serious repurcussions
 
Thank god the Bangladesh team were not hurt.

Appalling news but sadly the current political climate has emboldened Islamophobic, far-right movements all over the Western world.

It's time the authorities crack down on these hate sites like 4 Chan, Breitbart and such that pedal anti-Muslim violence.

The world treats Pakistan differently for odd reasons even if we are prepared to provide proper security. Now it has happened in NZ the boards will be tested for their level of hypocrisy.

Really sad news, i hope families can recover from this incident.

Feel for BD players especially Tamim as this might be his second exposure to racial violence as according to news couple of years ago his wife also faced racism in UK where he was playing county cricket. It will be tough for him to still have faith in humanity.

Why are people struggling to understand the very distinct difference? The Bangladeshi players were not specifically targeted unlike the Sri Lankan attack that was DIRECTLY carried out against the Sri Lankan players. The Bangladeshi players simply happened to be in close proximity to the mosque.

In 2002, there was a bomb blast in Karachi right next to the hotel where the New Zealand team was residing. Did it stop other countries from sending their teams to Pakistan? No it didn't. So why should teams stop touring New Zealand now?

Yes they are, but they didn't target the Bangladesh cricket team. There is no comparison with what happened in New Zealand to what happened in to the Sri Lankan team in Pakistan.

In 2002, there was a bomb blast in Karachi right next to the hotel where the New Zealand team was residing. Did it stop other countries from sending their teams to Pakistan? No it didn't. So why should teams stop touring New Zealand now?

Then why Australia cancelled tour to Bangladesh?
