Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announces the squad for the first of the two ICC World Test Championship Tests against Pakistan. The first Test will be held in Rawalpindi from 07-11 February. The Bangladesh Team is scheduled to leave Dhaka for Islamabad on 04 February. The second Test is in Karachi from 05-09 April:

SQUAD

Mominul Haque (Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mahmud Ullah, Md Mithun, Litton Kumer Das, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Ebadat Hossain, Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi, Al-Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Soumya Sarker.

Mominul Haque was entrusted with the responsibility after the ban of regular captain Shakib al Hasan and the former skippered the Tigers in the two Tests against India at their backyard.

Bangladesh cricket team will be led by left-handed batsman Mominul Haque in the two-match Test series away to Pakistan, and the solitary Test against Zimbabwe at home, confirmed national selector Minhajul Abedin to the media Friday.

Mominul was entrusted with the responsibility after the ban of regular captain Shakib al Hasan and the former skippered the Tigers in the two Tests against India at their backyard.

Minhajul said, “Like the last two Tests, Mominul will continue to lead the side in the next three Tests. We are depending on him.”

The Tigers will leave here for Pakistan Tuesday for the second phase of their tour where the two teams will take on each other in the first Test in Rawalpindi, slated to begin Friday.

Bangladesh will then return home and take on the African nation in the lone Test at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, scheduled to be held from February 22-26.

The Tigers will then travel to Pakistan for the second and final Test, starting on April 5 in Karachi.

Ahead of the first Pakistan Test, Minhajul said they would announce the 14-man squad Sunday.

And Minhajul said they would form the squad keeping the bouncy Rawalpindi wickets in mind.

“Conditions there are tough. And Pakistan have quite a few good pacers. We will be up against a difficult challenge,” said Minhajul.

My optimistic, hopeful prediction: Bangladesh bat first, 160 all out, Pakistan score 500+, then Bangladesh 150 all out.

Not a bad squad (considering we don't have Shakib and Mushfiq).

All the best.

Tamim needs to play long innings.

Bangladesh on Saturday dropped pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman and recalled Rubel Hossain for the first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan which begins in Rawalpindi next week. Mustafizur was in the two-Test series against India in November but was not picked for any of the matches due to his poor form and fitness. "Mustafiz was dropped for his poor performance. He is in and out of the team for quite some time and doesn't play longer-format matches regularly. His white-ball performances are not satisfactory," said chief selector Minhajul Abedin.

Opening batsmen Imrul Kayes, Shadman Islam and off-spinner Mehidy Hasan were also left out for injury while wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim opted out due to security concerns.

Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal returned to the Test side after skipping the India series for family reason while Bangladesh also recalled batsmen Najmul Hossain and Soumya Sarkar.

"Soumya has been picked as a backup player. Our first choice openers are Saif Hasan and Tamim. We have picked Soumya in the squad if coach makes plan to play him at seven as an all-rounder as they (Pakistan) have good number of quality fast bowlers," said Minhajul.

Bangladesh are due to depart for Pakistan on Tuesday for the first Test scheduled for February 7-11.

The second Test will be played April 5-9 in Karachi, after a one-day international on April 3.

Bangladesh visited Pakistan earlier in January amid tight security for a three-match Twenty20 international series in Lahore, which they lost 2-0.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan last week expressed his satisfaction over the security provided to the visitors during the Twenty20 series adding that "there was no reason not to go again for the Test series."

Squad: Mominul Haque (Capt), Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hasan, Najmul Hossain, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Ebadat Hossain, Abu Jayed, Al-Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Soumya Sarkar.

9. Rahi

I think, only change they should have made is Yasir Choudhury at 4 for Shanto/Mithun. By second Test, I think Yasir will make it. Soumya comes as replacement of Shakib as all-rounder & back-up seemer. Liton has to keep, but they should have picked back-up WK.

Why can't BD move away from Soumya Sarkar? I just don't understand why this guy keeps on getting chances. I would've played Afif over him.

He made a scintillating 160 against Kiwis few months back. He has every shot in book, best slip catcher of the side and can be effective back-up seemer - he should be in the XI, if Shakib is missing.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selector Habibul Bashar Sumon said that Tigers need to step up and make a good comeback forgetting the T20 series loss against Pakistan when they lock horns with the host in the upcoming first Test, scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi from February 7.

The Pakistan Test will be a part of the ICC Test Championship and Bashar expects a fresh start from the Tigers this time around after suffering three consecutive Test defeats one against Afghanistan at home and two against India.

“We didn’t play good cricket against India and Afghanistan. So, this is an important series for us. I know it won’t be an easy task there because Pakistan is a mighty opponent at their home. But having few in-form players, I’m hoping guys will play best Test cricket there,” Bashar told reporters at the SBNCS yesterday.

“We made a worst ICC Test Championship journey and need to bounce back in Pakistan Test. It becomes a must for us. All the players who made the squad are committed. We made few changes due to injury concerns but definitely they are our future cricketers. Expecting a very good start from them because we desperately need that,” Bashar said.” he further added.

The BCB announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming Pakistan Test leaving Imrul Kayes, Shadman Islam, Mustafizur Rahman out of the squad while Mushfiqur Rahim omitted the tour citing personal reason while Soumya sarker, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Rubel recalled to the Test side.

Talking about the squad Bashar think the Board has made the squad considering the players’ recent run in the domestic cricket. He also explained the reasons why Soumya, Shanto, Mithun have been picked up.

“After Shanto left out of the national team, he scored runs in each format including A team, Emerging team, First-Class cricket, Premier League. We’ve always kept him under the radar for a while because he needs to be getting started at one point. I think if we could give him opportunity for at least five or six matches it would be great for him to settle things out and if he performs well, it will be a good sign for us,” Bashar said of Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

“Again, if you look at Soumya, he batted really well in New Zealand series. But poor form forced him out of the next series. Recently he regained his form a bit and this why we recalled him as a back-up batsman. He has shown that ability to bat at No.3 and also at No.6. So, he might bat at the middle order, if needed. He is being picked as a genuine batter.”

“Mithun is also running out of form. But we want to give him little more time before considering someone new. Actually, you need to perform well to secure your place in the team and that’s exactly why we’re giving out of form players enough time to prove their worth. Hopefully Mithun will come back hard. If he fails to deliver his best, we’ll have no option left except trying another player,” Bashar said of Mithun.

Don’t want to repeat Test mistakes in Pakistan, says Mominul

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque has said they will try to ensure that the mistakes they committed against Afghanistan and India in the previous two series are not repeated during the Pakistan tour.

The first match of the two-match Test series against Pakistan will begin on February 7 in Rawalpindi and the Tigers are all set to fly for Pakistan on Tuesday (February 4).

“I believe we’re going to show a good sort of Test performance in Pakistan. But to do that, we’ve to make sure that we don’t repeat mistakes that we did against Afghanistan and India in the last two series,” Mominul told the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Bangladesh will be under-prepared ahead of the Rawalpindi Test as they will get only two or three practice sessions before the match takes to the field.

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said it is not ideal to play a Test in a venue without having any idea about the condition.

But, Mominul said they are happy with the preparations that the players got in the first round of the ongoing Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL).

“Batsmen played some good innings while bowlers grabbed many wickets (in BCL). So, I think we had a good preparation ahead of the series. But the preparations in Pakistan are not under our control. We’ve to utilise the time what we get there before the match. Instead of thinking in a negative way, we’ve to make sure that we do our best job,” he told reporters.

Mominul led the national team for the first time during the tour of India in December last. But, he failed to make his maiden captaincy memorable as Bangladesh lost both of the matches in India by innings.

He suffered a pair in the 2nd Test of the series in Kolkata what added more pain to his first series as captain.

But, the southpaw is confident to do better as a captain this time around. He said: “There’re many things to improve. As a captain, I’ve to make sure that I perform well in the field first. There’re many more things on and off the field as well that I have to improve. India series was my first series as captain. I think I’m more confident now to do well."

North Zone batsman Liton Das struck an unbeaten ton on the fourth day of the Bangladesh Cricket League match against South Zone as the four-day fixture concluded in a draw at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today.

South Zone had taken a huge 432-run lead on day three thanks to a treble of tons from Nafees Iqbal, Shamsur Rahman and Mahmudullah Riyad. With South Zone’s Shafiul Islam breathing fire in the first innings, picking up six wickets for 40 runs including a four-fer in a single over, the task was always going to be difficult for North Zone on the fourth and final day.

Liton Das came in to bat at the fall of opener Mizanur Rahman before seeing Rony Talukdar depart soon after, notched a 125-run partnership with left-hander Junaid Siddique for the third wicket. Liton struck his 100 in 165 deliveries during a three-hour plus stay at the crease. Facing against the likes of national team teammates Shafiul Islam and Al Amin Hossain, Liton powered his ton with nine fours and two sixes and persevered until the end of the day to remain unbeaten on 103 at stumps as the match was drawn.

The ton is a welcome one for the Tigers’ batsman ahead of the important first Test against Pakistan on February 7 with the team departing tomorrow evening at 7 pm. It was Liton's 15th ton in first-class cricket and the century took him over the 5000-run landmark in first-class cricket.

In the other BCL match at Chattogram, East Zone defeated Central Zone by an innings and nine runs on the fourth and final day. East Zone, who secured a huge lead following Tamim Iqbal’s triple century, bowled Central Zone out for 333. Mohammad Mithun hit a valiant 83 under pressure but with only seven wickets left, Central Zone struggled to contend with 19-year-old Nayeem Hasan, who picked up a six-fer for 85 runs.

As a Sylheti myself, its nice to see that Sylhet is getting some representation in the BD squad after a long time with both Abu Jayed (Sylheti pronunciation Abu Zayed) and Ebadat spearhaeading the pace department. Also excited to see Nayeem Hasan be the lead off spinner, representing our Chatgayya bretheren.

Ebadat has been a pure disappointment. I don't see him surviving for long. His averages in domestic scene is nothing special also.

Jayed is good. Haven't seen much of Nayeem. I think we need a leg-spinner more than off-spinner.

No practice for the squad today so guess they have one day to get used to the place. Dont think this is the way forward for such tours.
