Barcelona win La Liga 2018/19

Barcelona wrapped up their 26th La Liga title with a sluggish victory over Levante thanks to a goal from second-half substitute Lionel Messi.

Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg with Liverpool, Messi began the game on the bench.

The Argentina forward came on at the interval following a goalless first half and scored just after the hour.

He latched on to Arturo Vidal's header and beat two defenders before stroking the ball past Aitor Fernandez.

Barcelona did not have everything their own way and Levante almost spoiled the party when they twice went close to equalising in the second half.

Jose Luis Morales broke clear on the left edge on the edge of the box only to fire into the stands.

Then at the death Enis Bardhi's shot hit the woodwork and it bounced into the hands of Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on the line.

First part for treble-chasing Barca
Such has been Barcelona's recent La Liga dominance - this is their fourth Spanish title in five years and Messi's 10th overall - that determining whether this season will be heralded as a glorious one, or simply a good one, will depend on their performance in other competitions.

The defending champions will doubtless have taken satisfaction from delivering the title in front of their home fans for the first time since 2010; their last four titles have been won away or without playing.

They did so with three games to spare and in doing so closed the gap on Real Madrid's record of 33 La Liga titles to seven.

However, it is the prospect of a treble, featuring the Champions League and Copa del Rey, which will now command their serious attention.

Their performance against Levante was far from a vintage one and the celebrations of Barcelona's players when they lifted the trophy after full-time were relatively conservative.

The Catalans have not reached a Champions League final since 2015, when they last won the treble, and the focus will now switch to the first leg against Liverpool at the Nou Camp.

They also face Valencia in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, 25 May.

Liverpool's scouting dossier on their opponents in the last four of Europe's elite competition will, of course, have been compiled well in advance of Levante's visit.

So the absence of Messi from Barcelona's starting line-up will not have impacted upon their plans for Wednesday's first leg at the Nou Camp.

If he was watching from his home in Formby on Merseyside, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will surely have been encouraged by what he saw 24 hours after his side thrashed Huddersfield 5-0 at Anfield.

In particular, how Levante, despite being embroiled in a relegation battle, were able to frustrate Barcelona with a stoic first-half defensive display will have caught his eye.

Levante goalkeeper Fernandez made a number of important saves before the break, although they were routine rather than spectacular.

At 1-0 down Levante also squandered chances to equalise.

In Messi's absence, attacking trio Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele carried the threat but without Messi's talismanic presence they drew a blank.

It was not until Messi - La Liga's top scorer with 34 goals this season - came on as a second-half substitute that the home side sparked into life.

Stop Messi, and stop Barcelona might be too simplistic a formula. It will nevertheless be the one which will vex Klopp the most between now and Wednesday.

Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been taken to hospital after suffering a heart attack at their training ground, the club has said.

The 37-year-old is "stable" in hospital and remains under observation.

Spain goalkeeper Casillas won three Champions League titles, and La Liga five times, at Real Madrid.

He was also part of the national squad that won two successive European Championships, in 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2010.

A Porto statement read: "Casillas suffered an acute myocardial infarction during Wednesday morning training session held at the PortoGaia training centre in Olival.

"The work session was promptly interrupted to provide assistance to the Porto goalkeeper, who is currently at the Hospital CUF Porto. Casillas is well, stable and his heart problem [is] solved."

His former club Real Madrid published a statement, sending their former keeper "all the courage of the world".

"Real Madrid wants to transmit all their support to their beloved captain Casillas," the statement read.

"Casillas has taught us throughout his professional career to overcome the most incredible challenges to enhance the glory of our club.

"It has taught us that giving up does not fit into our philosophy of life and has shown us countless times that being stronger the harder the challenge is, the way to achieve victory.

"Real Madrid want to see their eternal captain recovered as soon as possible and send him all the courage of the world."

Spain's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Iker Casillas said he "does not know what the future will be" as he was discharged from hospital after having a heart attack.

The Real Madrid legend, 37, suffered "an acute myocardial infarction" during training with Porto on Wednesday.

Speaking outside the Hospital CUF Porto he said he would rest for "for a couple of weeks or a couple of months".

"The most important thing is to be here," he told reporters.

"A few days ago I went through a difficult situation, something that can happen at any moment of life, but fortunately I'm fine. I am grateful and feel that I am very lucky.

"Thank you to all who cared, for I felt very dear and cherished. I can only get out of this situation with a smile."

Casillas praised the Porto medical team's quick actions which "allowed the effect of the infarction not to be so serious".

He added: "I do not know what the future will be, but the most important thing is to be here, to be able to speak and transmit to everyone how I am and how I feel."

Casillas made 725 appearances for Real during a 16-year career at the Bernabeu, helping them win three Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.

He was also part of the Spain squad as they won two successive European Championships, in 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2010.

Having joined Porto in 2015, he won the Portuguese title last season and holds the record for the most Champions League appearances with 177.

A number of La Liga and second division players and club executives have been arrested in Spain as part of an investigation into match-fixing.

Police say 11 people are expected to be arrested in total and at least three matches are being investigated across the country's top three divisions.

A spokesman for La Liga said the police action followed an initial a complaint it had made over a match in May 2018.

"Among those detained are active and retired players," police said.

Presidents and directors of a club have also been arrested the police said.

"The investigation has established that those under investigation came to arrangements with different players to 'fix' at least three games in the first, second and third divisions."

The police said that in the case of one second-division match, more than 14 times the usual amount of money was bet on a game in that league. It did not specify which teams were involved.

Police said bets were made on the outcomes of games as well as other matters including the number of corners awarded.

A lawyer for Huesca, who were relegated from La Liga this season, confirmed that various people at the club had been detained on a warrant issued by a local court.

La Liga side Real Valladolid issued a statement saying the club had "learned of the arrests related to match-fixing" and that they "are the cause of a La Liga complaint".

The statement added: "Real Valladolid rejects any type of conduct or fraudulent behaviour, denouncing corruption among individuals, money laundering, criminal organizations or any type of behaviour that originates or could lead to the distortion and corruption of any sports competition.

"Faced with the arrests made, Real Valladolid maintains, as it has done since the day of its constitution, its commitment and fight against corruption or any type of illicit activity that undermines the integrity of sports competitions."

Valencia also issued a statement saying that reports of "supposed involvement by players and directors of other clubs in illegal gambling and alleged match fixing" are not related to the club, and that "Valencia CF is an entity completely outside of this matter".

A La Liga spokesman said: "We want to thank the police for the extraordinary work done to dismantle what appears to be an organised criminal group dedicated to obtaining economic benefits through the predetermination of football matches.

"During the 2018-19 season La Liga filed eight complaints with the general commissioner of the judicial police for alleged acts related to match-fixing in lower divisions of Spanish football and low-profile friendlies between foreign clubs in Spain.

"We have also sent alerts to the general directorate of gaming on 18 football matches for possible identification and sanction of players from lower divisions who could have bet on their competition.

"La Liga continues to fight to eradicate any scourge against fair play in Spanish football."
