Alright folks: Jason and me have been having some conversations about the moisture content of the willow in some bats. So he bought a moisture meter and the results were quite interesting, specially with the GM bats. Please feel free to share your thoughts. Special thanks goes out to Jason for taking the pains to do this.

Here are the results (and you can see the picture below):

In Jason's words:
1. mattrixx zouk pro scored a low average ( 10 tests) of just 2 %

2. Vindico scored a solid average of 9% in every one of the 10 tests

3. GM luna original has zero moisture content, with poly coat on ( 2011 bat )

4. GM flare original has zero moisture content even without the poly coat ( 2011 bat as well )

Jason's words:

The mattrixx is really dry.

the vindico marauder is solid and within normal moisture area. i think 8-12 is normal. Andy from Laver told me 12 % in the cleft when manufacture starts.

Its strange why the GM bats, from two different suppliers, two different models, one with poly coat on and one with it recently removed is showing zero moisture content. i did each bat 10 times and got an average reading.

i wonder if GM are doing something to their bats to either

A : dry them out completely
B : have them dipped in some chemical to lock moisture in and keep any moisture out and also blocking the measuring instrument.

wow ... great info !

I wonder if this dryness is causing so many GM bats being broken?

Where its possible to buy this moisture meter? Any particular brand, etc.?

I don't think the GM bats are dry; it must be some chemical they are putting in their bats which is leading to this strange reading. You can get pinless moisture meters starting from around $40 to around $300; the ones with pins are of course cheaper but you will need to make holes in your bats in that case and it is probably not a good idea.

In the GM website they say about use of driguard water repellent chemical at the toes.

Yes but the reading was 0 overall not just near the toes---Jason correct me if I am wrong; I think I have to start my usual message chain to get to the bottom of this.

yeah, i measured the sweetspot on the bats, not the toe as its to small an area. i have messages Richard Lowy, sales director at Unicorn sports ( also known as GM ) and am awaiting an official response to the question of why his bats read funny on the meter. The 101 k-willow bats all measure 4-6 % which im guessing is normal for one of those. some smaller sizes measured zero as well but that might just be cos they are junk.

i doubt the Gm bats are void of any moisture. it will be interesting to see what they say. stay posted for updates as they unfold.

good work lad; how are the readings in some of your other EW bats? GN for example.

Also, the supplier who gave you the Zouk should receive a thorough spanking; buyers need to be careful of him.

Amazing work Jason and zeusky amazing! :14:

I'm taking that Zouk is Asian bat? So Asian bats are usually drier than normal bats.

Around 10% is good moisture level.

I would be interested in seeing GN like Legends, Oblviion etc

I'm surprised to see why GM have 0 percent showing...

Jason where did you buy this meter from (if you don't mind me asking)? Looks very nice...

Cheers Jason will have a look at Amazon for it.

Ah okay. One thing I want to talk about here is Asian bats, people say they are overdried but I don't agree with that. Yes, they are drier compared to English bats but the main reason behind that is climate and storage in Asian. As far I know the clefts in Asia are not kept under controlled room and due to high temperatures the clefts dry itself. From what I heard that in Asia they don't have controlled room temperature like GM has [one showed in there videos on YouTube]

Good work so far however you really need to take these tests further,

Can you please check how much oiling adds to the moisture of the bat? A brand new bat un-oiled then once its oiled.

Get players to give you their "best" or "favourite" bat for testing see if the moisture varies in those that perform well. Who came up with the 12% moisture claim?

Did moisture vary along the blade? thicker parts of willow have more moisture than thinner? Does moisture move towards the toe over time drying out the handle area? Does the moisture depend on orientation of blade? standing up or lying down?

Keep up the good work!

Hey guys, here are some tests.

GN legend. 9%
Vindico marauder, 8%
Matrixx zouk pro, 2%
GM flare, 0%
GM Luna, 0%
Vindico Geronimo, 9%

I have more and will be sharing more over the next few weeks

GM kwillow bats, 4 and 5 %

Newbery kwillow bats, 1%

What is puzzling is how come the new Epics are showing a reading (7-9%) but the earlier GMs had 0 reading??

Yes very interesting indeed. You don't think my research has had an affect on the way the are making their bats do you? That would be a laugh!! Ha ha! :)

Maybe-- who knows? :))

Did you get these directly from Unicorn?
