Australia are the final team to get their T20 World Cup campaign underway, and the delayed start could work in their favour given the injury concerns they carried into the tournament.

They are already without key quicks Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, both ruled out through injury. In a curious move, Hazlewood has yet to be replaced in the squad, leaving Australia with just 13 available players for their opening match against Ireland. Tim David is also expected to miss the opener as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

An earlier start might have raised further concerns over Nathan Ellis, who has been managing a hamstring issue, and Adam Zampa, who experienced groin tightness during the final T20I of Australia’s recent tour of Pakistan — a series they lost 3–0.

Form is another area of concern for Australia following their heavy defeats in Pakistan, despite several players arriving from the Big Bash League. However, Ellis, David and Glenn Maxwell did not feature on that tour, while many members of the World Cup squad played only one or two matches at most. Adjusting to new conditions will pose a challenge, as will Ireland’s spin duo of George Dockrell and Gareth Delany, both of whom impressed against Sri Lanka.

Ireland, meanwhile, will also be feeling the pressure after squandering a golden opportunity to defeat Sri Lanka in their tournament opener in Colombo. Seven dropped catches and 59 runs conceded in the final four overs proved costly. Despite being well placed at 105 for 2, Ireland collapsed, losing eight wickets for 38 runs to fall to a 20-run defeat.

On paper, Ireland may hold a slight advantage as an unfamiliar opponent. The two sides have met only twice in T20 internationals and just once in all formats since 2016. Their most recent encounter came at the Gabba during the 2022 T20 World Cup, a match in which eight members of Ireland’s current XI also featured. In contrast, Australia may field only four players from that contest, with retirements and injuries significantly reshaping their line-up.

The only other T20 meeting between the sides dates back to the 2012 World Cup in Colombo, when Paul Stirling, Dockrell and Maxwell were all part of the action.

Aussie skipper out of Cup opener, superstar Sri Lanka bound

Travis Head set to captain Australia in their 2026 T20 World Cup opener against Ireland

Mitch Marsh is out of Australia's T20 World Cup opener after suffering a serious blow to the groin area, with Steve Smith on his way to Sri Lanka as cover for the men's T20 captain.

Travis Head will lead the side against Ireland in Marsh's absence, as he did in the first T20 in Pakistan last month, with his fellow opener requiring a period of rest and rehabilitation.

It leaves Marsh in doubt for the team's second match on the tournament against Zimbabwe in just two days' time, with Australia down to just 12 fit players for tonight's clash with Ireland in Colombo (beginning at 8.30pm AEDT).

Australia XI: Josh Inglis (wk), Travis Head (c), Cameron Green, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Matthew Kuhnemann

Ireland XI: Paul Stirling (c), Ross Adair, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Curtis Campher, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Matthew Humphreys

Australia named a quartet of World Cup debutants as stand-in skipper Head opted to bat in the Group B match at R. Premadasa Stadium.

Marsh's absence means Matthew Renshaw comes into the batting line-up for his maiden World Cup appearance having only made his T20 international bow two weeks ago against Pakistan.

The left-hander has been listed at No.4 in an order that will no doubt shift depending on the situation of the innings, with wicketkeeper Josh Inglis sliding up to open alongside Head.

Allrounder Cooper Connolly will also play his first World Cup match and been listed at No.7, as will bowlers Xavier Bartlett and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Marsh was hit in groin area while receiving sidearm throw downs from one of Australia's assistant coaches during Australia's training session on Sunday, immediately exiting the net for treatment.

Cricket Australia confirmed 15 minutes before the toss at R. Premadasa Stadium that Marsh would miss the match, joining big-hitting star Tim David on the sidelines as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

"He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement," CA said in a statement.

"Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.

"Stand by player Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should he be required."

Smith hasn't been officially added to Australia's World Cup squad yet, but they do have a spare spot available if they need to bring him in quickly after opting not to replace Josh Hazlewood in their 15-man group when it was revealed last week that he would miss the tournament.

Paceman Sean Abbott is also in Sri Lanka as a travelling reserve.

Marsh's injury adds another layer to Australia's tumultuous lead-in to the ICC's T20 showpiece which saw them thrashed three-nil by Pakistan last month and star quicks Hazlewood (Achillies) and Pat Cummins (back) ruled out on the eve of the tournament.

Several pundits had previously been calling for Smith's inclusion in the T20 squad following another stellar Big Bash campaign for Sydney Sixers where he slammed 299 runs at almost 60 in six matches, which included a fifth T20 century.

The 36-year-old was spotted taking part in LIV Golf's Adelaide Pro-Am earlier today and will join the squad in Colombo in coming days.

In better news for Australia, Nathan Ellis has been declared fit after recovering from a hamstring niggle and will lead the pace attack in their first-up clash with Ireland.

Left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis is the only remaining available player in Australia's squad not in today's XI to face Ireland.

Australia are the last of the 20 competing teams to get going in the tournament, with some countries having already played two matches.

Ireland are coming off a narrow loss to co-hosts Sri Lanka at the same venue on Sunday night and have named an unchanged team to face Australia.

Australia squad:
Mitch Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa. Travelling reserve: Sean Abbott

Back in early 2010s, Ireland were the strongest team outside of the full time nations.

Now they're below Afghanistan, Scotland, Nepal, Netherlands, Namibia and may be even USA.

Nathan Ellis is a super skillful bowler in this format. Doesn't get enough credit. Perfect bowler for these conditions.

They haven't gone backwards but Irish cricket hasn't progressed a lot since the days of O Brien. They look less professional than Scotland, the Dutch, Afghanistan and even USA.

Australia leave Ireland on brink of World Cup exit

Men's T20 World Cup, Group B, Colombo

Australia 182-6 (20 overs): Stoinis 45 (29); M Adair 2-44

Ireland 115 all out (16.5 overs): Dockrell 41 (29); Ellis 4-12

Australia win by 67 runs

Australia impressed in their T20 World Cup opener as they made light work of beating Ireland by 67 runs in Colombo.

Nathan Ellis stepped up for a bowling attack missing Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood with his figures of 4-12 helping to end a run of five consecutive losses in T20 internationals.

Spinner Adam Zampa also took four wickets against opposition who lost captain Paul Stirling to injury after facing just one delivery.

After losing their opener against co-hosts Sri Lanka on Sunday, Ireland are now on the brink of elimination.

The side who did not win a game at the 2024 tournament will need to beat Oman on Saturday and Zimbabwe on Tuesday, as well as requiring results elsewhere to go their way, if they are to make the Super 8s.

Australia, the 2021 champions, were the last of the 20 teams to get their tournament under way and arrived in Sri Lanka with questions over the form and fitness of their squad after a bruising 3-0 series defeat by Pakistan.

Already without the likes of Cummins and Hazelwood from their bowling attack, their injury concerns were exacerbated by the absence of captain Mitchell Marsh with the 34-year-old suffering "testicular bleeding" after being struck in the groin area while receiving throw downs during a training session on Sunday.

For their opener at least, there were no signs of the predicted gloom.

Even without their skipper and Tim David, Australia were still able to select a top three who had all featured in the Test side's dominant Ashes victory over England this winter.

Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green all contributed to Australia going at a rate better than 10 an over through the powerplay, though all three were gone by the seventh over.

Head, standing in as captain, was run out for only six after facing seven balls, while sharp catches from George Dockrell and Stirling accounted for Green (21) and Inglis (37) - an especially welcome development for Heinrich Malan's side after the fielding miscues that proved so costly against Sri Lanka.

Ireland were still far from perfect in that regard though, again to the detriment of Matthew Humphreys who barely acknowledged the first wicket of his tournament when he bowled Matt Renshaw to break the Middlesbrough-born 29-year-old's key 61-run partnership with Marcus Stoinis for Australia's fifth wicket.

Given the slow surface in use for a second time in four days, Australia's total of 182 always felt a good return, aided in no small part by their hard work between the wickets as they ran 22 twos.

If there was a feeling that Ireland let a chance for a first ever victory over Sri Lanka slip, a maiden triumph over Australia always felt at long odds and again, questions will be asked about whether the side are exposed to opposition of this calibre with enough regularity.

In warm-up games against Italy and UAE, Malan felt he had settled upon a line-up that would allow them to bat down the order but their top and middle order were decimated by an understrength Australia attack.

While their response to the testing chase was not helped by losing skipper Stirling, Ellis quickly put paid to any hopes of a shock.

In the absence of his illustrious bowling colleagues, Ireland had no answer for the 31-year-old's variation of line and pace as he bowled Ross Adair for 12 and Ben Calitz for 2 either side of inducing a weak shot from Curtis Campher that was taken by Green.

At the conclusion of Ellis' second over, Ireland were 27-4 but effectively 27-5 given Stirling's injury.

George Dockrell, on the occasion of his 350th Ireland performance across all formats, led his side with 41 off 29 balls but it was always sure to be in a losing cause.

T20s are all about work ethics fitness etc. Irelands captain needs to go. Cant have fat obese players in T20Is. They need an overhaul.
Aus as usual is the tournament team.. Understiate them at your own peril. They have a bunch of match winners

Getting test status has actually harmed them. Their players can't play county anymore as local players.

IRE got hammered by both SRL and Aus. So much for preparing way in advance for SRL conditions lol. They should've swapped group with BD. I hope BD never invites these guys anytime soon.

Yeah I wish that has been agreed upon.

Watching BD get thrashed by all teams in this group would've been fun to watch.
