Mohali, Mar 2: BCCI’s Apex Council announced on Wednesday that India batsmen- Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Gujarat Titans all-rounder, Hardik Pandya are all demoted in the latest central contracts of the board.

The BCCI has four categories — A+ which has annual remuneration of Rs 7 crore while A, B and C categories are valued at Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.

Accordingly, Pujara and Rahane, who were in Grade A are now in Grade B, after a slump in form that saw them being dropped from the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

That they will be downgraded was reported by PTI on January 20.

The biggest demotion, however, was for injury-ravaged all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has been shunted out from Grade A to C in the list.

Controversial keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha, who has been dropped from the Test team, will still be richer by Rs 1 crore after being demoted from group B to C.

Not surprising.

Pujara seems like he is finished. He is already 34. There are other better prospects.

How so?

This is what is called ruthless professionalism. If any player from the Pak side had played an innings like Rahane did in Australia, they'd have a free pass in the team and the top contract for at least the next 3 years.

BCCI does not roll like that and that is commendable.

Rahane and Pujara have been underperforming for quite sometime. With Kohli also in decline, their batting woes got too much amplified. They deservedly got dropped. These 2 should not have been in the team for South Africa Tests.

Pandya is too brittle to bowl in any format. His batting alone cannot guarantee a spot in the team. Ravi Jadeja is the no.1 allrounder for all formats now.

Tbh....India too have given Rahane a very long rope.
He has been struggling since 2017

BCCI has nothing to do with it, if you're a country with a population of 1B+ and a huge talent pool, this is going to happen.

Pakistan, SA, NZ, WI, BANG, England, Australia, Zimbabwe would have done the same exact thing given the circumstances.

Fair point. However, I'd still say that a knock like his for Pakistan would give a player a new lease of life for at least another few years.

Even a players like Pujara getting demoted would send shockwaves in Pakistan.

Surprised to see the next big thing Pandya demoted like this. I don't think this will make any difference to his bank account because he is already earning crores in Pyjama League. He should stay there and let other guys like Venkatesh, Thakur, Chahar and even Hangargekar play international cricket. :inti

Ideally, Rahane and Pujara should've already played their last game for India. And they've only themselves to blame for this.

Yeah, they should have been in C contract too just like Pandya.

Anyways, I liked the fact that they are valuing Test Cricket here. Vihari and Gill who are test specialists get C contract while the T20 specialists like Kishan or V Iyer or Harshal didnt got any contract. Yuzi also got only C contract which is the best he deserves tbh. That is a good move prioritising Test Cricket.

Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma Likely To Lose Central Contracts; Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill Set For Promotion: Report

The BCCI is likely to remove out-of-favour Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma from its annual central contracts while Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav may get promotion when the list for the 2022-23 season is finalised during the Board's Apex Council meeting on December 21. Hardik Pandya, who is being seen as future T20 captain, is likely to get a promotion to Group B from C. The meeting, which has 12 items on the agenda, will be held via video conference. A review of Indian team's performance in the T20 World Cup and Bangladesh One-Dayers is not part of the agenda but if chairperson deems necessary, non-listed items can be considered for discussion.

In a novel gesture, the Apex Council will also ratify a one-time payment for V Jaydevan, whose rain-rule formula is being used in domestic white-ball games for more than a decade now.

At the international level, ICC uses Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method (DLS) while VJD is used for Mushtaq Ali T20, Vijay Hazare Trophy and erstwhile Deodhar Trophy and Challenger Trophy.

Changes in Central Contract

One of the major items on the agenda is the "Retainership Contract" of senior men and women cricketers.

It is understood that former vice-captain Rahane and speedster Ishant, who are out of India contention, will be axed from the fresh list. Stumper-batter Wriddhiman Saha will also be axed from the list as he was specifically told at the start of the year that he won't be selected for India again.

An A+ contracts offers Rs 7 crore, Group A Rs 5 crore, Group B Rs 3 crore and Rs Group C offers Rs 1 to the cricketers.

There are multiple metrics used by the BCCI in consultation with national selectors to determine the gradation system.

A+ and A are two categories where the players are either all-format regulars or at least certainty in Tests along with one of the two white-ball formats. To be in Group B, a cricketer has to play at least two formats while group C is primarily for single-format players.

Also, one needs to play a specific number of international games (per format) to for inclusion in the list. The promotion however is performance-based and ICC ranking is also taken into considering.

"Surya was in Group C but his performance in the last one year warrants a promotion to Group B at least, if not A. He is currently world No. 1 in T20I ICC rankings and is a serious contender in ODI team also," a senior official, who is privy to the developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Gill, who is now a two-format regular (Tests and ODIs) can expect a promotion from Group C to B.

Someone like Ishan Kishan, who has played considerable number of international games across two formats in 2022, is likely to enter the list.

Pandya, who has now led the national team in two T20I away series, might be included in group B after a string of consistent shows. He was demoted to Group C last year after missing a major part of last season due to a back injury.

Other items on Agenda

The BCCI will also discuss the status of two of its premier jersey sponsors -- edu-tech giant BYJUs and kit sponsors MPL.

An Infrastructure sub-committee will also be formed and upgradation of five venues will also be discussed.

Appointment of consultancy firm Grant Thornton is also on the agenda list.

The venues for India's home series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand (ODIs and T20Is) and Australia (Tests and ODIs) have already been announced and it will be ratified by the Council along with new Cricket Advisory Committee, headed by former Test cricketer Ashok Malhotra.

They disrespected Shreya’s Iyer once again by placing his two levels behind RoKo in B category.

Rishabh Pant & Shubhman are more valuable to BCCI than Shreyas bhai. A disgrace

Bapu deserved to be in A grade, he has been the MVP for us in all 3 formats

Arshdeep deserved atleast B of not A . He was one of the main reason behind India World T20 2024 win .

Shreyas deserved to be in A Grade so is Jaiswal .

Jadeja didn't deserved A+ Grade .

Grade A+ players get ₹7 crore per year.
Grade A players get ₹5 crore.
Grade B players get ₹3 crore.
Grade C players get ₹1 crore.

Seems to be some politics behnd this.

BCCI isn't perfect. A lot of background politics.

7 cr is peanut for Kohli because he is earning 8+ cr just for a single Instagram promotions Post .lol :kp

This is the signal that both Kohli and Rohit will play all 5 tests in England.

For Getting BCCI contract, the criteria is to play 3 Tests or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is in the specified period :kp

Big names included as India announce annual player contracts
Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan who had missed out on contracts during the 2023-24 season make a return to the list.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja are a part of the elite A+ category, as 34 players have been handed the men's central contracts by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The list sees Iyer return to Grade B, while Kishan is a part of Grade C. Both players had been excluded from the central contracts for the 2023-24 season. The Indian contracts run from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025.

Iyer returns on the back of a sensational run in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy, which saw him lead his side to the title, and also won the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for March for his contributions. BCCI Official said:

"The period of fresh central contract is from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025 but the assessment year is October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024 - Kohli, Rohit & Jadeja played the T20 World Cup final in June, 2024 and hence at that time, they were all-format regulars. Going by that technicality, they are supposed to be in A+ category". [PTI]
