Just did a little research on the top all-time earners from the IPL. Cricketers have made a great amount of wealth from the league and for many its life-changing money. It’s always fascinating to hear interviews of Australian, English cricketers and the way even they mention how their first IPL pay day was a huge deal for them and their families. This sport has really taken care of the players. Really glad cricketers are well paid unlike Hockey players and other Olympics athletes.

This is a rough estimation btw. Actual figures could slightly differ but I think the order is more or less same and overall figures wouldn’t be far off as the figures were cross checked with multiple resources by AI.

In INR

1. Virat Kohli – ~₹207.96 crore
2. MS Dhoni – ~₹192.84 crore
3. Rohit Sharma – ~₹178.60 crore

Heartening to see someone like Rahul Tewatia who hasn’t played any international cricket at all has earned close to Rs 30 crore. That’s a great amount of money for a non international player. Never could a player hope to earn this much wealth from domestic cricket.

Major wants to know what % of their earnings go to you? How does it benefit you?

How Chris Morris has earned more than Gayle just baffles me. The IPL Auction is more like a lottery. The amount of money involved is insane, with franchises randomly hyping up a random name every time. Even Unadkat grabbed a deal worth 11.5 crore back in 2018.

Chris Morris was a top T20 player back in the day. Handy batter too. Gayle stopped fetching big money once RCB moved on from him.

I'm curious .. What happens when a high performing player is retained by an IPL team before the next mega-auction ? Do they get the same amount they were originally brought for in the next cycle as well ? Or does the player have a right to refuse retention so that he can get a better deal with a new team in the mega-auction ?

The major factor here is the Auction purse fixed by the IPL. With time it’s grown. Like for example last mega auction purse was Rs 120 crore for each team (from Rs 100 crore previously)

Every IPL gets to retain maximum 6 players and there is a cap on 1st retension at 18 cr, 2nd retention at 14 crore and so on. A team can spend all its purse in retaining 6 players or keep all their purse for the mega auction by not retaining any. Then it’s free market and highest bidder wins. In case of tie, retaining team can execute Right To Match (RTM) to win the bid.

Rishabh Pant was offered Rs 18 crore by Delhi last year (max cap allowed) and he refused it. When he went to the mega auction he was offered 21 cr by Lucknow. Delhi used the RTM but Lucknow increased their offer to 27 crores and got him eventually.

So IPL team purse is the major driver for player earnings.

Interesting that if there was no cap on Team purse, the Ambanis would be retaining players for like 50 crore something 🤣 or in future Saudis could enter and ruin it with crazy money. IPL keeps a cap on purse to ensure some ultra ultra rich owners don’t get an unfair advantage.

I knew about the team purse cap but not the player retention cap. Interesting.

Kohli hasn't been in an auction since the first one in 2008 iirc. Which means he has always been satisified with the 1st retention cap of RCB ??? That's very loyal of him, refusing to seek more money !

Probably they do get more money off the book..

I think there was some sting operation in 2013 which revealed that some teams also pay extra under the table to some players. I refuse to believe Sky and Bumrah are paid only what MI revealed to us. Bumrah would have been sold for 25 cr in auction definitely.

I used to think players like Harbhajan were always getting fined for playing aggressive cricket for the sake of the team must be getting compensated under the table. I don’t know if real world works like that. Always wondered

Chris Gayle came to RCB as a replacement player for a low price. RCB's parent company offered him ads in the Caribbean for one of their brands - Kingfisher. It was just a vehicle to pay him more under the table. So, technically RCB had more money left in the purse that they could spend on other players.

Absolutely get multiple bonuses crom
Ambani

It also helps with his tax write off

So he would merrily pay bumrah

Shahid Afridi aka Afridi I would’ve been a billionaire if he continued to play IPL.

Would still be playing and bashing trundlers and smacking Zee TV satellite out of orbit.

Unfortunately IPL puppeteers could not bear it. Had to get rid of his home team Deccan Chargers as well who would play with increased zeal and aggression after their leader Afridi I left and go on to win many IPL seasons.

Sad to see. What could’ve been. If he played another edition it would have ended international cricket.

Well he was the top draw in T20 cricket back in the day so for sure he would have been one of the top foreign players in the IPL among earners without a doubt. Not to mention the popularity of Pakistani cricketers like Afridi in Bharat back in the day was way more than that of other foreigners.

Having said that Afridi kept on playing in multiple leagues annually so he made a lot of money to look. Arguably the richest Pakistani cricketer with a net worth exceeding 700 crore PKR

Sachin is nowhere in this list and he’s the richest cricketer in the world with a net worth of USD 170 million

Ponting also, net worth USD 100 million

It's such a shame I was such a huge fan of both those worthless traitors Azharuddin and Jadeja throught the 90's. Shame on me!

I was a fan of jadeja .he used to get bowled against Saqlain in identical fashion and I used to think what's wrong with him.

I was a fan of both of them. Azhar was a worthless home track bully with an away average of 36 in Tests, but he was still the second best batsman we had in our team. The less we speak of our 'wonderful' bowlers away from home, the better. Speaks volumes how dependent we were on Sachin away from home.

Shahid Afridi isn't much admired outside of Pakistan cricket circles I believe.

Forget about players. You know how much commentators make? Top commentators like Bishop make 500,000 USD every IPL edition. They are millionaires too. Some dug out commies make 750,000 USD.

I always wonder from where they get the motivation to talk so highly of Tata Curvv as if it’s Lambo or something lol.

True, but still, someone like Karthik fetching more money than Maxi, Warner, Stokes, Pollard, and Watson doesn’t make any sense. Karthik is a clutch T20 bat, but at best, he’s only a tier above the likes of Uthappa and Parthiv.

Bharatiya players will always fetch a premium. Unadkat was one of the highest earners not too long ago. DK at least better than that lol

DK played every single season since 2008 until he retired. That is 17 years of earnings. That is like high paying government job.

Government job is donkey work
It is the last thing u should look out for.

Not really.
Government jobs provide much better work life balance and generally a lot less stressful for employees. The starting salary packages are so much better than private jobs for most people and there are many additional benefits. While Private jobs payscale have no limit, not all private employees have lucrative compensations. Majority of them are really slogging and struggling to enjoy family life due to all the stress and lack of time.

Still I won't like to be a servant of the administration.
I want to be my own man.

No government job pays that kind of money, officially.

Fictional high paying government job. Ya it doesn't exist. But in terms of security you are settled for life. In government job even if you work all your life you won't even see one season worth of money. I remember DK went for 12 crores a couple of times.

Karthik could keep too. Didn't take a valuable foreign quota. Played spin good. That's gold dust. Its not about the player level but what is required, demand and supply.

He had a specific role. He played it well in a few seasons. There was a point when India hardly had any keeper available who could score quickly. Only recently we see a lot of keepers.

These are just their cricketing salaries, how much they earn via endorsements, sponsorships, social media, their own personal investments, business investments is perhaps 10 times more

Each tweet of Kohli earns a lot of money. yea.. Every one must be uber rich. Heck even women cricketers are rich. Smriti mandhana must be worth 10 million already.

Wow, that's a huge amount for commentators. I thought they earned much less. I guess umpires also make good money, along with all the other perks.

No point comparing Indian IPL players earnings with PSL stars earnings. Its like comparing a millionaire in US with a middle class man in Pakistan. Too much parity.

Currency difference makes it seem like a big difference. But truth is that majority of Pakistani cricketers live a lavish life because property and luxuries in Pakistan are a lot more pocket friendly. Also, you can happily marry 4 women in Pakistan without family and public outrage. It’s the ultimate flex for any man in front of which any riches look insignificant. Also Pakistani women are more loving, submissive and give more children per capita, again a dream for any man. Shahid Afridi has 5 children. Compare that to feminazi golden digger Bharatiya women who make life of their hubby miserable and give no babies.

If a woman is having more than 2 kids, she will have to become a housewife most probably.

5 kids means the woman has no career. Her best 10 years are spent being Pregnant and recovering from the effects of it. After that she will not have any sellable skills to get any kind of good paying job.

Most of my friends living in India with working wives have 1 or 2 kids at max. Most have only 1 kid. They simply cannot afford more children and have no time to care for more kids.

Exactly what is wrong with our society and the reason why Pakistan continues to beat us in happiness index. We learnt the worst from the west and our women have been ruined by western influence. Pakistani women treat their husbands as kings while our women are conspiring to destroy the man in the house and want to replace him (after he’s dead, divorced or just runs away in frustration). This is why a Pakistani man with 1 crore rupees is more happy than a Bharatiya man with 10 crore rupees. He goes back home to a loving woman and many children to play with. Our men are destroying their body with alcohol and drugs because they’re depressed of which their companion is the major reason.

May be Indian man should man up and not cry too much about the Bharateeya nari. Any family that wants to have enough disposable income to enjoy the pleasures of life, should have both partners working. If the family is generationally rich or the husband earns IPL type money, then the lady of the house does not have to work and have multiple kids to their heart's desire.
