The Board of Control for Cricket in lndia (BCCI) is likely to utilise the COVID-19 pandemic to not only try and help smaller cricket nations stay afloat financially but also regain its clout in the International Cricket Council (ICC) politics.

The chief executives of the ICC full members are set to discuss the possibility of deferring the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI Super League during Thursday’s meeting of the Chief Executives Committee (CEC). As the CEC is set to discuss the rejigged future tours programme assuming a possible resumption of international cricket towards the end of the year in the post-pandemic scenario, the BCCI is understood to have opened backroom channels with multiple boards.

According to a BCCI insider, the BCCI has been offering tours to virtually every full member in the reworked FTP to ensure other cricket boards can generate income through broadcast deals. More importantly, for the BCCI, such an arrangement will help it to claw its way back into ICC boardroom.

After dominating the ICC affairs for almost two decades, the BCCI’s importance in the game’s governing body has been on the wane over the last four years with Shashank Manohar at the helm. Despite being a former BCCI president, Manohar - ICC’s first independent chairman - is perceived to not let BCCI have its cake and eat it too when it comes to revenue sharing model of the ICC.

As a result, the BCCI has been sidelined in the ICC boardroom. “If other boards are assured of a tour by the Indian team, that income coupled with the appearance money BCCI pays for every board for releasing its players for the Indian Premier League, may result in other members toeing BCCI’s line in ICC,” said an observer.

Manohar’s successor is supposed to elected during the ICC Board meeting in June but the pandemic could result in the election process being delayed. If the BCCI can get substantial votes at its disposal, it can re-emerge as the kingmaker in ICC in the post-pandemic world.

If this is the case then BCCI is doing a good job for themselves. Whether it helps others - I am not sure.

Big 3 revisited again - who can forget India's false promises in order to get Pakistan to accept the Big 3 model

Does that include Pakistan? :inti

This is why the BCCI has all the other boards under its grip. They have rewarded them financially for all their support all these years which is why the PCB has no where to go to

BCCI seems to be the only board left with earning power even when there is no cricket! They made look to get rid of the other 2 and become The power in cricket.

Who would have thought we would live to see this day where Cricket Australia is begging the BCCI for a handout? ECB itself does not look pretty where just because of failing to host one season of county cricket they are looking at 300 pounds in losses. So far, i havent seen any panic in the PCB at all which is remarkable for a board with no international cricket at home for 10 years.

Well, Pakistan does still have a decent domestic market, and with proper management, I am sure they can continue to make their own improvements to domestic cricket, getting sponsorship from departments, intl cricket in Pak and PSL, should still be ok. Biggest thing is to get these departments on board with some money and build the city associations and school cricket as promised...

Aus, Eng, India will always be better off, but Pak’s domestic market is still much bigger than the other nations in the top tier surely? Maybe Bangladesh, if their economy continues to improve, will be a more lucrative market in the future, with help from India? But still, they got to produce the players...

BCCI takes center stage at the ICC Covid crisis meeting

The International cricket council's CEC meeting was held on Thursday via Teleconferencing where BCCI took charge of the proceedings after a good Five years. BCCI secretary laid down the ‘new rules of the game’ as BCCI showed signs of picking up from where it had lost its way back in 2015.

"In the given scenario, there are pressing points that need to be addressed. We understand the apprehensions that may arise for many cricket boards at this juncture and the BCCI will do its best to support the fraternity. India will lead the way in charting out the future course of action" told Shah as most member boards agreed.

Those who attended the meeting said, the BCCI secretary set the tone for the conference, asserting for the first time after taking charge of his present role that the time has come for India to assume the leadership role at ICC once again.

"Jay laid down the roadmap in terms of what are going to be he standard operation procedures going forward. The BCCI understands very well that India will have a pivotal role to play in the near and distant future. The economics of the game are going to stare down the barrel. Members expected Jay (read: BCCI) to speak and he did. He’s clear that BCCI should be allowed to once again lead the way at ICC. Only a self-sustained board can show the way for others to follow," said those in the know of the conference.
