What's new

BCCI set to earn over Rs 2000 crore from IPL, nearly 95% of the board's surplus

I understand that your loyalty lies with RCB because it's your home city, but does the fact that not many bangalore-based players play from it affect your view of the team? Your captain who is the poster boy for the team is from Delhi, so do the Delhi Daredevils fans feel some sort of ownership over him? I've never been too much into club based sports so I've always found this scenario to be fascinating.

I'd love to one day but not easy to get the visa :(.

Don't think local player stuff matters, Malinga is Sri Lankan yet MI fans will call him one our own since he has always been with us. Kohli has been with RCB long time and will stay there for long time, same with abd, that's how fan loyalty works.

I have not been to single IPL game, neither do I know how people follow the league in India. All I have is what I have read, seen on the internet and anecdotal evidence.

The league has had multiple generations that have grown up on IPL. The kid who was 8, 9 or 10 years old in 2008 and just getting into sports has had IPL all his/her life. This kid is now in college and soon will go on to a job. How will these kids spend their money? I tend to think that IPL will get a good cut of their money over internationals.

The people who were 25+ in 2008 and went to bars with co-workers, friends and bought tickets to games and bought merchandise are now 35+ and likely have children of their own. How/what are these people going to steer their children towards? I would say IPL is a very likely place (not saying they will ignore internationals).

The point is, as the years go by the league is going to become more and more integrated to the culture. Which is what the IPL wants, be part of people lives, their family “traditions” etc. This is what is going to grow the league.

I think the Indian market has the room for 3 to 4 more teams. Which of course means more games and thus longer length. Now, how international cricket will handle this is a big ???

Kohli is more Bangalorean than Delhiete ...Thanks to RCB.

Even I was not understanding how club based sports work before, IPL did changed my perception. Like me IPL touched lot of fans in last 10 years. As I was already cricket fan, started instant connection with IPL.

But lot of new fans were added to cricket through IPL in my circle ..family, friends and colleagues. Few not use to follow Internationals much before but they definitely tune in and even discuss cricket during IPL season !

Regarding your Visa, hope you get chance once to see it urself one IPL match live, share experience with all here #Cheers

IPL needs international cricket. How are we supposed to find new talent for IPL every year? Can't trust domestic performances every time.

International LOI's make scouting very easy.

Lol there is no loyalty in IPL. Which loss will hurt you more? CT final or IPL final?

You’re missing the point. I’m not saying this change is going to happen today or tomorrow. But with more Ipl teams being formed which will get more people tuned in especiallly if their city/state is playing and yes instead of a few weeks it will have to be played for 3-4 months. It willl end up like nfl or nba which are currently billion dollar sports corporations. I really don’t think Ipl needs international cricket after that. People will talk about how the Kerala or Delhi team fought in the final and etc etc. There will be so much money pouring in that people will be asking what International cricket ? How many time is India going to play srilanka ? That gets dull in my opinion ?

I know I’m getting ahead but like nfl or nba Ipl needs to pick the latest and greatest talent coming straight from high school/college during the start of their draft. This mimics the the current nfl drafts and the team that performed miserably the year before gets to pick the first pick or the best player coming in. I know for this colleges has to incorporate college based sports franchises similar to what Us colleges which again is a long ways off.

Then abolish the art of bowling with it.Dont call it cricket, call it power batting competition.T20 players will never be worthy of respect as cricketers.

Maybe not to you but from what I have been noticing, alot of players are calling it a quit and hanging up their white kits and boots to play in color. Hell, some even gave up on their respective countries color kit and are busy representing some t20 league around the world. At the end of the day, money talks, a sport career is very short lived, players will run after the money rather than that so called respect just like any other human being on this planet. And to add to that note, what good is your talent if no one is watching you play to begin with? Majority of the T20 games are in favor of the batsmen anyways. Regardless of how good of a bowler you are, in a T20 game, you get smaked around the park anyways. Odi isn't any better in the modern day. Bowlers are getting smaked around, batsmen are scoring 200+ ...

I would also like to know, who here sat down 40h for one week to watch a full test match (tv or stadium) in the last couple of years?

International LOI's make scouting very easy.

We have seen the trend shifting though, every year franchisees opt for these unknown names based on local t20 competitions of other countries.

Guys like Corey, Stoinis etc.. have become stars post IPL.

Once all leagues are setup around the world, I think teams would be more comfortably scouting from that rather than international cricket unless of course someone reaches the level of Kohli/AB of course.

Well said...the IPL will defiantly add a couple more teams and get bigger

Here are a few safe predictions.

IPL would be a 20 team league in 10 years' time. The alpha mega cities of Mumbai and NCR will have multiple IPL teams each. During this period, the IPL season shall stretch to become a 5-6 months long league. Whether that would mean an early start to the IPL season from January or splitting it in two halves would be determined later.

Going forward, the only 'off' season in Indian cricket would be the monsoon months of June through September. October to May would constitute peak cricket season.

I think in coming years IPL should expand to 20 teams with foreign players quota extend to 5 or even 6. Apart from teams and players, IPL should also ask owners/franchise to build a dome that can enable them to play even during monsoon season, and have 7 month long season kinda like MLB baseball. The 5 month off season can be used to play Worldcups or prestigious Intl series like Ashes.

More power to the IPL! Eventually the stupid jingoistic nation-vs.-nation cricket will become a talent hunting ground for IPL.

Need to expand the IPL even more. Need junior league, womens's league etc.

Probably twice as much from the source they aren't supposed to.

Could you please care to explain the source with which BCCI was not suppose to earn?

After COA came into picture, every single transaction of BCCI is kept open for scrutiny.
Also made every BCCI expenditure was made public in BCCI website.

This was one of the main outcomes / conditions of Lodha panel !

Whole thing is a match fixing circus. That much should be clear considering the number of people getting caught including not only players but people who used to be the head of BCCI.

Do u think any sports body in the world is clean as white paper?

No,there will be RATS in every sports body to make personal gains.

Supreme Court of India is trying to clean-up the mess and conflict of interest in BCCI from last few years ... whole thing is work in progress via COA.

Everything in India can be controlled or managed if you have political background (exactly what many BCCI present / ex bosses have) !

If you are from Pak, you too will be knowing how Politics and Sports are interlinked and manipulated in our countries (PAK and Ind) !

BCCI selectors in line for pay hikes following CoA approval

The BCCI scenario selection committee is line for a pay hike, with the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) approving an increase of Rs 30 lakhs for former India cricketers Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh and Rs 20 lakh for chairman of selectors MSK Prasad, according to a report in The Times of India.

As per the report, which includes a reference to the minutes of a recent CoA meeting, the CoA – which comprises former CAG chief Vinod Rai and former India women’s captain Diana Edulji – took the decision to increase the selection committee members’ salaries to Rs 90 lakh per year (up from Rs 60 lakh) and Rs 1 crore for the chairman of selectors (up from Rs 80 lakh).

The existing BCCI senior selection panel comprises Prasad, Gandhi and Sarandeep after the Supreme Court last year ruled that all selectors must have played Test cricket. On this basis, Jatin Paranjpe and Gagan Khoda had to step down.

For the junior selection panel, the chairman will get a Rs 5 lakh hike for a yearly salary of Rs 65 lakh while the others will get RS 60 lakh per year. The women’s selection panel will get revised salaries of Rs 25 lakh per year and the chief selector Rs 30 lakh.

The TOI report includes mention of the CoA minutes, stating “the CoA was informed that before the above increase could be communicated to the selectors, some of them had approached the acting secretary (Amitabh Choudhary), seeking an increase in their remuneration. In view thereof, the acting secretary had asked Saba Karim (General manager of cricket operations at BCCI) for a comparative analysis of the increase in remuneration fee of team India’s support staff and (India A coach) Rahul Dravid since FY 2014-15. After going through the same, the acting secretary had recommended a further increase of approximately 70%.”

BCCI could earn up to USD 5 billion from IPL broadcasting rights only

The current five-year rights (TV and digital) for IPL from 2018 to 2022 are with Star India but, according to people who are in decision-making capacity, the valuation, which is at ₹16,347.50 crore (USD 2.55 billion) right now, could more than double and reach USD 5 billion.

The BCCI is set for a windfall of gigantic proportions as the IPL broadcast rights (TV and digital) could fetch the Board up to USD 5 billion for the next five-year cycle (2023-2027) while some high-profile interest is being seen in the bidding process for the two new teams.

The current five-year rights (TV and digital) for IPL from 2018 to 2022 are with Star India but, according to people who are in decision-making capacity, the valuation, which is at ₹16,347.50 crore (USD 2.55 billion) right now, could more than double and reach USD 5 billion (around ₹36,000 crore approx at current exchange rate).

"There is a well-known US based company which did send BCCI feelers some time back, expressing their serious interest in bidding for IPL media rights. With 10 teams playing IPL from 2022, the matches will go up to 74 and in any case, the valuation of the property increases," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"But with two new teams about to fetch anything between ₹7000 crore to 10,000 crore, the broadcast rights are certainly going to shoot through the roof. So expect the IPL broadcast rights to go for anything above USD 4 billion and may be up to USD 5 billion," the official in the know of things said.

Any foreign company showing interest in buying IPL properties needs to have an Indian wing.

The last time around, there were only two major players in TV and digital media rights market with Star India handsomely outbidding Sony, who held the rights from 2008-2017.

Star had bid nearly ₹5300 crore more as Sony's final composite bid was ₹11,050 crore (USD 1.47 billion). Star India is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company India.

The BCCI normally categorises various broadcast deals like TV, digital (streaming), radio, and social media but last time, it allowed separate as well as one composite bid.

Any company can also bid separately but if the valuation of the singular composite bid is more than the cumulative amount of singular bids, then that is considered by the Board.

The BCCI is set to release the Tender invitation in Dubai on October 25, the same day when two new IPL teams will also be announced.

The BCCI is expecting robust bidding from both Star India and also Sony, which would like to get the IPL property back in its bouquet.

Manchester United owners Glazer family picks up IPL team bid document

The senior official also confirmed that the Glazer family, which owns Manchester United, has picked up the bid document as October 20 was the last day.

"Yes, the Glazers have picked up the bid document. Obviously, IPL is now a globally acknowledged sports property and international firms will be interested.

"Whether they would bid at all or whether they would be later interested in buying stakes in an existing IPL team, we don't know," the senior official said.

The IPL bid document costs ₹10 lakh and a lot of business houses and big corporate houses buy the bid document just to analyse the business prospects.

There has been a trend of private companies, which are flush with cash, showing interest but it remains to be seen how many put in the bids, which will be opened on October 25, a day after T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan.

The BCCI is expecting anything between ₹7000 crore to 10,000 crore from the team bidding of IPL.

The official then gave the example of Red Bird Capitals, a US based investment firm which is one of the investors in English Premier League (EPL) giants Liverpool. They currently have 15 per cent stake in IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals.

As PTI had reported some time back, some of the major players who could bid for new IPL teams are the Adani Group, Kotak, pharma majors Aurobindo and Torrent group, and the RP-Sanjiv Goenka group.

The BCCI is allowing consortiums and companies with annual turnover of ₹3000 crore to bid for teams.

The base price for new IPL teams is pegged at INR 2000 crore.

Will a former India cricketer become a first time IPL team co-owner?

A very reputed former Indian cricketer and big star of India's World Cup victories might join one of consortiums as a minority stakeholder with his investment.

"Yes, a very well known cricketer has shown active interest in being a part of the new franchises. Yes, he wants to invest his own money and be a part of the consortium.

"He wants to be a minority stake-holder but with his experience, he would want to take the cricketing decisions. Whether any of the new business houses will agree to such a proposal remains to be seen," the source informed.

Good for upcoming cricketers. At least sports is an option for kids in future as career.
In olden days only 11 players had a shot at fame and money. Many other talented players who thrived at local level but could not make it to national team ( either due to lack of spot in team or politics) now can at least make good money and get reasonable fame.
Like it or not like it, IPL is here to stay and will be prioritized by players world over.

The main success for IPL is ''Cricketainment (with all the glitz and glamour) '': Compressed Offering to fans along with their families to enjoy a game of cricket with music/food/movie stars in 3 hrs. The ability to see big stars in combination with local and foriegn upcoming potential stars is added benefit.

Some people will live in denial and want to be purists like some posters here, Ranatunga, Holding etc etc but most of them joined Kerry Packer circus back in 1980's themselves in a split second moment thay saw more $$$ so well maybe for them it is just case of sour grapes. Only those who do not benefit from it, do not get anything from the IPL criticise it. There are so many people whose livelihoods are there because of the IPL. It can be the guys who are at the grounds who paint people's faces, people who are making those shirts that are sold outside the stadiums just before a match, or the vendors who have food stalls at the stadium. There is an entire cottage industry around the IPL.

The IPL has revolutionized the game, not just in terms of the huge money it has brought in but also in identifying the hidden talents from different parts of the country and providing them with a platform to play alongside some of the greats of the game.

Game always need to invent itself - else it will fail to meet the demand of generations. For that matter anything in life is about change and adapting to changing times.
People who used typewriters for office work had to adapt to computers eventually despite initial resistance.

IPL did just that in 2008 and a decade or so later is reaping benefits not just for BCCI but the industries that benefit indirectly from IPL time.
It benefits peripheral business as well . I remember in 2014 I had gone to India during IPL time ( unplanned). Every bar resturant I tried to go in evening was packed with people watching IPL . Thats good business for food industry. I remember my friend who works at a wine+beer shop close to the DY Patil stadium that they sold almost similar qty of alchol on match day that they sold on new years eve.
On the same trip I had difficulty finding a good hotel to stay in Pune as my visit coincided with some match day. Unfortunate for me that day I had to finally stay at a friends friend house but I guess people who work in hotel industry were not complaining.
