BCCI to conduct 2127 matches in bumper 2021/22 domestic season; Ranji Trophy returns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced bumper 2021/22 domestic season. The board will be conducting a total of 2127 domestic matches which kicks off on September 21. The season will mark the comeback of the Ranji Trophy, which didn't take place in 2020/21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BCCI was forced to shorten the season last year and only conducted Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the men's division. The BCCI also organised women's matches.

The 2021/22 season will kick off with the Women's One Day League, which will be followed by Challenger Trophy. The Challenger Trophy is a tournament where the best players from the List A league are picked. There will be 160 matches in the One Day League while the Challenger Trophy comprises 4 matches.

The men's cricket will kick off on October 20 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The tournament includes as many as 149 matches. 4 days after the T20 league, the players will switch to red-ball cricket to take part in Ranji Trophy, which wil take place from November 16 to February 19, 2022.

After a break of 4 days following the Ranji Trophy, the players will be back in action for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. There wil be 177 matches in Ranji Trophy and 169 matches in Vijay Hazare Trophy. The junior players will take part in U-23, U-19 and U-16 competitions.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Friday said that the Ranji Trophy this season would be held in two phases, in which all the league-stage games would be held in the first phase. "The Board has decided to conduct the Ranji Trophy this season in two phases. In the first phase, we plan to complete all matches of the league stage while the knockouts will be held in June. My team is working closely to mitigate any kind of health risk caused by the pandemic, while at the same time ensuring a highly competitive red-ball cricket contest," Jay Shah said in an official statement.

"Ranji Trophy is our most prestigious domestic competition, which has been providing Indian Cricket with an enviable talent pool every year. It is absolutely important that we take all necessary steps to safeguard the interest of this premier event," he added.

Earlier, former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri on Friday said that the Ranji Trophy is the backbone of Indian cricket and the premier domestic red-ball tournament should not be ignored.

"The Ranji Trophy is the backbone of Indian cricket. The moment you start ignoring it, our cricket will be SPINELESS," tweeted Shastri.

On January 4, the BCCI had postponed the Ranji Trophy due to rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The Ranji Trophy and Col CK Nayudu Trophy were scheduled to begin in January this year.

Last season as well, Ranji Trophy was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 will get underway in March end and the tournament will get over in May, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier confirmed

Ravi Shastri is right...no Ranji for last 2 seasons has hurt our cricket a lot. I like IPL but its the Ranji trophy from where talent pool comes. It is absolutely imperative we have it this year.

BCCI announces India’s domestic season for 2022-23

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday announced the schedule of India’s domestic season 2022-23. Over 1500 matches will be held during the season that will commence in the first week of September 2022 and run until mid-March 2023.

The prestigious Duleep Trophy will mark the start of a full-fledged season, which will also see a return of the Irani Cup. The Duleep Trophy (8th September-25th September) will be contested between six zones (North, South, Central, West, East and Northeast) on a knockout basis. The two multi-day tournaments will be followed by the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The two white-ball tournaments will be contested between 38 teams split into three groups of 8 teams and two groups comprising 7 teams.

The Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic tournament, will have two categories ; 1) Elite and 2) Plate. The Elite Group will comprise 32 teams and will have 4 groups of 8 teams in a home and away format with each team playing 7 matches in the league stage. The top two teams from each of the four groups will directly qualify for the quarterfinals.

The Plate Group will comprise 6 teams with 15 league matches and the top 4 will directly qualify for the semi-final while the bottom two will play against each other for the 5th/6th place. Both the Elite Group and Plate Group league matches will start on 13th December with the Plate League concluding on 29th January and the Elite group finishing on 20th February.

As the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa in February 2023, the women’s calendar begins with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy starting on October 11 and concluding on 5th November. It will then be followed by the Senior Women’s Interzonal T20 and T20 Challenger. The 50-over format will then take over with Senior Women’s one-day Trophy and the inter-zonal one-day.

Both the Senior Women’s Interzonal T20 and one-day have been re-introduced this season. For the first time, the Board will conduct a one-day tournament for girls at the U-16 level. The competition will help the girls get a feel of competitive cricket at a young age and help them make a smoother transition to the U-19 level.

Since South Africa will also host the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in January, the women’s U19 T20 Trophy and Women’s U19 T20 Challenger have been scheduled from 1st October to 7th November.

The day a person from the Siddi community plays for India, i would consider BCCI's efforts to spread the games to the grassroots complete.
