OTHER FACT – A young Belfortain, the son of a police officer, was threatened and beaten after posting photos of him celebrating Christmas on Snapchat. His attacker reproached him for taking part in this Christian feast when he is of Muslim faith.
A young Belfortain of Muslim faith and the son of a police officer was beaten up on Friday after posting images of him celebrating Christmas. Aged 20, he lives with his mother, a police officer in Mulhouse and his stepfather, a police officer in Belfort, according to information gathered by the regional daily Republican East. Following the publication of a snapshot showing oysters and shrimp, he first received a threatening message: “Dirty son of white, son of a snake, son of policemen … I’ll show you what a real Arab is“(Arabic in verlan).
The author of the messages, who knew him from school and from his football club, threatened him because he was shocked to see him celebrate Christmas when he is of the Muslim faith. Wanting to have an explanation, the young man invited him to a date. But he was expected by five people who attacked him and violently hit and threatened him so that he did not file a complaint.
Sectarian and racist behavior– The victim’s mother
“He fell into a trap”, said the mother of the victim, a judicial police officer, for whom “This affair must not go unanswered. These are sectarian and racist behavior. It is unacceptable in the 21st century. Everyone is free to celebrate what they want and as they wish.”
The representative trade union organization of the National Police supported its “colleague” and to “his family”. Michel Corriaux, Grand Est regional secretary of the Alliance police union, spoke on Twitter “angry” and manifested his “Disgust at the hate against cops and this foul religious fundamentalism. The criminal response must be firm and uncompromising.”
Inadmissible aggression– Jean Rottner, president (LR) of the Grand Est region
Several political figures have spoken out to denounce the facts. The president of the Grand Est Region, Jean Rottner (LR), reacted on Twitter: “Unacceptable aggression motivated by too ordinary racism and hatred of the police. France needs a republican authority which expresses itself really and effectively. All my support for the victim and his family”, he wrote.
Home Secretary Gerald Darmanin also strongly condemned this act of violence : “In Belfort, a young man attacked because he would have celebrated Christmas and would not be a ‘good Arab’. ‘Aggravating’ circumstance: being the son of police officers. Justice has opened an investigation. No room for separatism in our country, no place for racism wherever it comes from. “
Among the other reactions, that of François Jolivet, LaREM MP for Indre, who expressed his outrage on social media: “France allows him to practice and celebrate what he sees fit. His attacker has understood nothing about the Republic. He will quickly have to integrate himself into these principles.”
