Lets face it - Root is struggling.

We can give 1000 excuses for that but there is no other way to say it

Ben Stokes looks the most able of the whole lot - his attitude and his performances all looking good.

He is an all-time great, but I don’t think he is the right fit for captaincy.

Problem would be his workload. Playing in all 3 formats and contributing in all departments as captain would be too much .

Stokes just hit a reverse switch hit for six.....Stokes is incredible this year, but to captain, bat and bowl may be too much a toll.

Stokes should be captain, as he is aggressive and leads from the front.
Only worry is all players go through a bad patch... people need to stick with him when he does.

Whoever becomes English captain goes completely out of form. Let Stokes be as it is. Make some mediocre player the captain like Joe Denly or Jason Roy.

I think Stokes should be the captain. Nobody else is currently qualified.

He is also the best performer currently.

Unlike Root, who is a mental midget taking, over captaincy wouldn't affect a guy like Stokes much. In fact he'd probably perform better. Can't just sit there and be scared to make him captain because of guys like Root.

Botham’s form fell apart as skipper. Flintoff’s too. They won’t kill the golden goose a third time.

Yeah. Gooch got better. Gatting’s average held up but he became hit and miss - he would go 0, 0, 150. Nasser’s form held up. But everyone since got worse. I would give it to Buttler but he may be about to be dropped as he can’t buy a run, he hasn’t come down emotionally from the WC.

Drop Roy, switch the batting order around, bring Morgan back and install him as a specialist skipper - any runs would be a bonus.

Burns
Denly
Root
Stokes
Morgan (c)
Bairstow (wkt)
Buttler
Woakes
Archer
Broad
Leach

I wouldn't give it to Stokes.

His game is unique and it requires the ability to breathe (psychologically) when his form is gone. The English media won't spare him if things go south and I have a feeling he wouldn't take it well in those situations.

Give it to someone else and let Stokes do his thing.

Agree with Morgan but take the gloves from Bairstow and give it to Foakes, who comes in place of Buttler. Drop Buttler for now but still keep him in reckoning.

Ok agree.

Ben Stokes has had an incredible summer. He first led England to their maiden ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title, with a performance for the ages in the final, and followed it up by leading their batting charts in the 2019 Ashes.

Tests. His most spectacular contribution came in the third Test at Headingley, where he batted with the tail to lead England to a one-wicket victory with 135*.

That knock has since gone down as an all-time great innings. It helped keep the series alive at 1-1. However, with Australia going on to retain the urn with a 2-2 draw, Stokes is ready to swap all that glory for an "overall win".

"There have been some incredible highs and some moments that I can hardly believe happened, but they did," he said on the final day of the series on Sunday, 15 September. "I will always be able to remember what it was like being out there in the middle when we won the World Cup or won at Headingley. But as good a day as that was, I would still swap that drama at Headingley for an overall Ashes win, though.

"It probably hasn't all sunk in yet, but at some point, I'll be able to look back with some satisfaction at what we managed to achieve as a one-day team and a Test team this year."

With his all-rounder performances over the last four months, Stokes has engraved his name in English cricket's history books. The 28-year-old now has over 6500 international runs and 215 wickets – 906 of those runs came in the two major events, along with 15 wickets.

"All I wanted to do was have an impact in as many games as possible and help England win as many matches as possible this summer," he admitted. "Before England had played a game this summer we knew we had the World Cup and the Ashes ahead of us, and now we're stood here at the end as World Cup winners and with a drawn Ashes series. Obviously we'd like to have won it, but we haven't lost anything."

Stokes began the summer with the terrific one-handed catch against South Africa in England's World Cup opener. It was a sign of things to come. "So many people have been in touch at various times during the summer, and that catch here at the Oval against South Africa feels like such a long time ago, but I guess that is where it all really started," he said.

The success hasn't come easy, for Stokes or England. The hosts went through a slump halfway through the World Cup, and needed two wins out of their last three games against Australia, India and New Zealand – all of whom they had poor World Cup records against – to make it to the top four.

However, they got out of a tight spot after claiming those four points, and ultimately were crowned World Cup champions. That fight was evident in the Test side as well, as they fought back in the third and fifth Ashes Tests to deny Australia a series win. "It hasn't all been plain sailing because we had to dig ourselves out of a hole in the World Cup and then we had to scrap until the very last to get that trophy, but we got it," Stokes said.

"The same in the Ashes where we had to fight all the way to the end to get the draw, but we got it and I think that is something we can be so proud of. When things got tough, we didn't crumble, we stood tall to the end and showed the character in our dressing room."

If England were to replace Root as captain, Stokes would be my choice as his replacement.

Done well as captain - atleast in batting - to be seen how he leads the side at home.

He's had an "okay" match so far.

Batted well under pressure and in difficult conditions in the first innings, although probably should have scored 20 more - and then restricted the Windies to a lead of 100 in the field when it could have been double that.

A half-century with the bat to make this game safe would solidify this as a good debut.

I think the team for the next match should be

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root
Stokes (c)
Pope
Foakes (w)
Broad
Wood
Leach
Anderson

England doesnt have many options.

If it was upto me I would gone with Anderson or Broad.

Bizarre that Stokes chose this game to go for the all-out pace with Archer and Wood. Surely it makes more sense to rest Broad and go with Archer-Wood for the next game at Old Trafford, which is a far faster and bouncier wicket. Even though Archer and Wood have had poor games, I honestly think the bowling lineup should be unchanged for the next game.

Ben Stokes will play no part in the early stages of Durham's County Championship campaign, but head coach Ryan Campbell believes he'll be ready to give 100% for England this summer.

Another career ruined by injuries.
He could never replicate his true potential post 2019 due to recurring injuries.
I am sure he will be himself mentally devastated due to these injuries.

He has potential to match Flintoff in bowling in all formats and batting even better
