Ben Stokes on WC19 game vs India: Kohli "whingeing", no intent from MS Dhoni

Has Stokes got an IPL contract at the moment? (asking for a friend)

Stokes has not outrightly said India cheated, but he has not denied that what's in his book is false.

Stokes over-rated India. There was no way India was chasing down 337 in a World Cup game.

I thought they were quite capable, if Sharma and Kohli got going. Of course lots of people underestimated the England attack, which had the first and second wicket aggregate bowlers in the tournament.

more than capable of chasing those totals.

india chose the wrong selections due to political reasons.
dhawan injury was key. You think England wouldn't struggle without roy? without roy they were toothless.
Same should apply to india. Rahul dint play in the middle order. iyer and pandey (scoring runs for fun in domestic) were overlooked for some past it, trash wastrel fodder of the highest order like karthik and jhadav.

Not in England, not on an ICC prepared pitch.

England would not chase that total down against Bangladesh during the World Cup.

Fast bowler S Sreesanth has not taken too kindly to Ben Stokes’ remark about MS Dhoni in regard to India’s World Cup match against England last year. In his book, ‘On Fire,’ the England allrounder had mentioned there was ‘little or no intent ‘ from Dhoni during India’s chase of 338 at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

Sreesanth, who has won two World Cups under Dhoni, has warned Stokes regarding his comments, claiming the former India captain is not one to forget.

“I hope Ben Stokes wishes he never plays against Dhoni, because he (Dhoni) doesn’t forget anything,” Sreesanth said during an Instagram Live. “I wish Stokes all the best because if during the IPL or an India-England match, him and Dhoni cross paths again, whatever the one or two million Stokes has been getting, it’ll all go away. Dhoni may even end his career.”

Sreesanth, whose ban – due to his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot fixing scandal – ends in September, challenged Stokes, the second-ranked ICC ODI allrounder – to dismiss Dhoni in a match and fancied the idea of one day bowling to the England all-rounder.

“I openly challenge Stokes to dismiss Dhoni, irrespective of whether he’s the No. 1 allrounder in the world. Ben Stokes, you’ve been playing for the last four to five years and since I wasn’t playing, I am really looking forward to bowl to you brother. Just to give an answer to what you said about Dhoni.”

Dhoni wanted to win the match against England in 2019 World Cup, says Michael Holding

I don't think anyone can say that was a team tactic to lose the game, says Holding

New Delhi: Former West Indies pacer Michael Holding has come out in support of MS Dhoni, saying that the wicket-keeper batsman indeed wanted to win the match against England in the 2019 World Cup.

India's performance in the World Cup match against England last year has once again become a matter of debate as all-rounder Ben Stokes in his book titled 'On Fire' questioned the intent of the Indian side.

Stokes also said that Dhoni's intent was questionable as he did not go for big shots when India still had a chance to win the match.

However, Holding said that nowadays people tend to write anything in their books.

"Well, people will write anything in books these days, because people are a lot more free with their opinions and when they are writing books, they need to be making headlines at times," Holding said on his official YouTube channel.

"But, to be honest, a lot of people watching that game perhaps wouldn't have arrived to the same conclusion that Ben Stokes arrived at that India were not trying to win," he added.

Holding did say that it seemed like that India did not have the same intensity as they would have had if the match was a do-or-die match.

"It was not the game that India had to win, but I don't think anyone can say that was a team tactic to lose the game. I watched that game and it appeared to me as if India weren't putting up their 100 per cent, but I realised it was not the case when the expression on MS Dhoni's face told me that he desperately wanted to win, so I do not think it was a team decision to not try to win," the former Windies pacer said.

"But I don't think they went with the same intensity of wanting to win the game, say, if it was a do-or-die situation. If it was, we would have seen a different game," he added.

On his official YouTube channel, Holding also said that no team goes in with a set pattern in terms of chasing targets.

In the round-robin stage match against England in Birmingham, India failed to chase down the massive target of 338 and fell short by 31 runs.

That was the only game that India lost in the premier tournament last year before the semifinal loss against the Kiwis.

India's chasing approach, in particular of wicket-keeper batsman Dhoni, was criticised by many, including the fans at home.

As soon as Stokes mentioned Dhoni's lack of intent in his book 'On Fire', Pakistan fans started saying that India deliberately lost the match to knock out their neighbours.

However, Stokes clarified that he never said India lost deliberately and some people were twisting his words.

Dhoni has been past it for at least 5 years now. Not surprising to see him not being good enough to chase 338 in a WC game against hosts.

Can't blame any result, but India lacked intent in Eng WC game: Hafeez

Lahore, June 15 (IANS) Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez on Monday said India did not show intent during their 2019 World Cup game against England and he was let down as a cricket fan.

In the match at Birmingham, India were comprehensively beaten by 31 runs after failing to chase England's score of 337/7 last year. Pakistan missed out on a semifinal berth as a result of that game and crashed out of the tournament.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes recently said he was a bit surprised with the way in which the Indian players looked to plan the chase. And while many former Pakistan cricketers looked to use that statement to prove their point that India lost the game to keep Pakistan from qualifying for the knockout stages, Hafeez has said that there was no intent to play with spirit.

"Ask any cricket fan, everyone will say intent to play with spirit was not there. I don't know about the results and who went out because of that. We played good cricket and we were out because of our small mistakes. So I can't blame any result for that," Hafeez, who was part of the 2019 World Cup, told reporters during a video conference facilitated by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

"But as a fan if I see the match, I did not see the match winning intent. I felt bad for the sport. The encounter factor was missing where both teams were playing to win. The mistakes we made, we failed to tick a few boxes in the 2019 World Cup. But as a fan, that is my opinion about that game," added the 39-year old who has been named in the 29-member Pakistan squad for three Tests and as many T20Is against England to be played in August-September.
