Ben Stokes reverses his retirement from One-Day International cricket

with such a performance from last few month it's better for Stokes to resign from all formats of cricket. Nobody will bother now to request him to take back his retirement.

Four options England may consider to replace Ben Stokes at T20 World Cup

Ben Stokes sprung a surprise on Tuesday when he announced he would skip this year ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to allow his body to rest and the decision leaves England with some thinking to do as they plot the best way to defend the title they won in Melbourne in 2022.

While trying to find a player that can replicate the big-game heroics of Stokes is a near impossible task, England do at least have some viable replacements they will look at ahead of June’s tournament in the USA and Caribbean.

Here are four options England may consider when finalising their squad for this year’s 20-over showcase.

Add an extra batter to an already strong top-order

Skipper Jos Buttler and the world's No.2 ranked T20I batter Phil Salt appear certainties to feature in England's top-order, while highly-talented youngster Harry Brook is likely to play a part in their title defence despite the fact he hasn't played any cricket this year.

With Stokes missing, it might leave the door open for England to look at one or both of Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan as extra batting options or the highly-rated Will Jacks is another player that could slot in.

Try a like for like and choose another all-rounder

While none have the class that Stokes possesses, England have some good all-rounders in their ranks and can boast at having two players inside the top 10 of the ICC Men's T20I All-Rounder rankings.

They are Liam Livingstone (eighth) and Moeen Ali (ninth) and both players are likely to find their way into England's squad for the 20-over showpiece.

Reigning T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament Sam Curran will also join them, but could another all-rounder come into consideration?

Underrated all-rounder Chris Jordan was born in Barbados and will feel at home during the matches played in the Caribbean and has rarely let England down in the past when he has been slotted into the playing XI.

This was evident in the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne, when Jordan picked up two key Pakistan wickets when playing a key role in England's title success.

Spin to win with an additional spinner

Conditions in the Caribbean and the USA may well suit the slower bowlers and England have a bevy of good spinners at their disposal.

The world's No.1 ranked bowler Adil Rashid will play a crucial role with the ball, while Moeen is quite flexible and can be used during the Powerplay and at the death.

Livingstone and Jacks - if selected - can also provide some spinning options, but could England include another specialist spinner in their final squad?

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed impressed when collecting six wickets from four appearances during England's series against the West Indies towards the end of last year and selectors have not been afraid of throwing the teenager into the deep end in the past.

All out pace assault

Barbados-born quick Jofra Archer will lead England’s pace attack at the T20 World Cup if fit, while the likes of Reece Topley and Chris Woakes are sure to play a part alongside the plethora of decent bowling all-rounder options.

Another possibility England may consider is going with an extra fast bowling option and including either or both of Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson in their final squad of 15.

Wood claimed nine wickets from four matches at the most recent T20 World Cup in Australia, while Atkinson impressed against New Zealand last year when collecting a four-wicket haul on T20I debut in Manchester.

Maybe he will be back on the squad as a surprise. Pulled out from the T20 World Cup but heading to the USA for holidays

England cricket legend Ben Stokes stranded in Manchester with visa trouble trying to go on US holiday with his family

England cricketer Ben Stokes has been stranded in Manchester after having trouble with his visa while trying to go on holiday with his family.

The 32-year-old was forced to ditch his wife and two children at the airport, who boarded their flight to the US without him, leaving him alone in the big city, miles from his family home in County Durham.

But despite his unfortunate circumstances the England captain has been keeping himself and his fans entertained by documenting his shenanigans as he waits for his visa to be approved.

The England Test captain, Ben Stokes has revealed that he would be open to making a return to the white-ball side after the appointment of Brendon McCullum as the Head Coach for England across all formats:

“It’s an amazing opportunity for the white-ball team to experience what Baz has brought to the Test team. He’s an incredible coach who speaks with utter commitment, and it’s nice to have all three teams now with the same messaging and the same philosophies towards playing cricket,”

“If I get the call and [Baz] says, ‘do you want to come and play?’ Then obviously, it’s definitely going to be a yes, but I’m not going to be too disappointed if I don’t, because I can just sit back and watch everyone else go out and smack it,”

“I’ve played a lot of white-ball cricket for England, and I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved in that form of the game,” he added. “But to be honest, we’ve not even spoken about anything like that whatsoever. I think he’s just letting me concentrate on what I need to concentrate on, especially around the Test team,”

England Men’s selection panel named the squads for next month’s white-ball tour of India, which includes three ODIs, five IT20s, and the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, hosted by Pakistan in February and March but Ben Stokes name was not in that list meaning he is not being considered for White-ball format anymore.

Here is the reason why:

Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes was not considered for selection as he continues to be assessed following a left hamstring injury sustained during the third Test match against New Zealand earlier this month.

Ben Stokes injury update

England Men's Test captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of all cricket for at least three months after further assessments confirmed he has torn his left hamstring. The Durham all-rounder will undergo surgery in January.

The injury occurred during the third Test in Hamilton, during England's recent 2-1 Test series victory in New Zealand.

I think England could use an all rounder like him for Champions Trophy. England don't have any fast bowling all rounders.

Yes but stokes is pretty much done now. He is a has been in whiteball. People are a bit too nostalgic thanks to his 2019 and 2022 exploits but by 2023 wc it was clear he was more or less finished as a whiteball player.

So is root. England really need to stop having their test players come back for one off odi tournaments. It back fired massively for England last time and has frequently back fired for multiple other teams. For example it backfired for pakistan when they brought yk back one last time in 2015,

And it will 100% Backfire for India as without Bumrah, rohit and kohli ensure India is only playing with 4 batsmen

Which team has a fast bowling allrounder apart from maybe India.

Omarzai is rubbish with the ball, Stoinis is rubbish with the bat. Rest of the teams don't have anyone even pretending to be a seam allrounder.

Even Hardik as seam allrounder is hit and miss and is injury prone.

He's still 2X better than any all rounder England have in white ball.

A 4th pacer is very useful. Specially on pitches and matches where your spinners are getting tapped. Not to mention in death overs usually pacers go for less economy than spinners. That's another factor which comes to play in big tournaments.

@mominsaigol

Who is even near Stokes as All Rounder in England white ball setup right now? In their CT25 squad?
The better question is, is their even another allrounder 🤣🤣🤣.

you don't need an allrounder in your team ro succeed. I have no issues with stokes but both stokes and root will cost England for the 2nd time.

That's just being ignorant. A good all rounder is always handy to have. There's no guarantee you win it but it provides you with team balance.

Pakistan ODI team would be so much more balanced if they can have a pace all rounder at no. 7. Someone that can bowl and bat.

We'll see, he still finished his wc 2023 campaign with a 50+ avg so I don't mind.

But he hardly bowls now adays or if ever.

Genuine seam allrounders are extremely rare in ODI. And no, they are not necessary at all.

Australia won 6 World Cups and how many seam allrounders do you remember in any squad.

They were mostly batters who would bowl seam up and that's it.

A batting allrounder who can give 4-5 overs of seam up at reasonable pace is worth gold in ODIs.

Stokes was also a gun lefty batter in middle who could attack left arm spin and pace well. Now Eng have an all right middle order with Brook, Buttler, Liam.

Don't think they are much different from Aus, in fact Eng may be slightly the better team man to man. Its just that some sloppy batting cost them 25-30 runs and some poor bowling from Carse compounded their flaws

'Nonsense to make Stokes white-ball captain'

Michael Vaughan believes it would be "nonsense" and "selfish" for England to make Ben Stokes a white-ball captain.

Test skipper Stokes is under consideration for at least one of the limited-overs roles after Jos Buttler stepped down in February.

The Telegraph has reported that Harry Brook is set to become T20 captain, leaving a choice between Brook and Stokes for the 50-over job. BBC Sport understands no final decisions have been made.

Stokes has a chequered injury history - he is currently recovering from hamstring surgery - and has not played white-ball cricket for England since 2023.

Any return to the limited-overs format would be an increase in workload in a defining year for the 33-year-old's Test captaincy, with a home series against India followed by the Ashes in Australia.

Vaughan, himself a former England captain, said: "It's absolute nonsense to think that Ben Stokes is going to play white-ball cricket.

"He gives absolutely everything, not just when he's playing for England but when he's training. He is all or nothing.

"In a way, I think it's quite selfish to even consider him, because he will say yes, because he is Ben Stokes. He will do whatever England ask him to do. Just don't ask him, just let him be."

Stokes has energised England's Test team since taking charge in 2022. In the aftermath of Buttler's resignation, England director of cricket Rob Key said it would be "stupid" not to consider Stokes for a white-ball job.

Should Stokes take on one or both white-ball roles, it would also further align him with head coach Brendon McCullum, who added the limited-overs sides to his Test responsibilities at the beginning of this year.

Stokes is the best leader England have and his white-ball pedigree includes match-winning performances in the finals of the 2019 50-over World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.

But the coming months will shape his legacy as Test captain, and England's hopes of regaining the Ashes in Australia would be almost destroyed if they were to lose Stokes. Any further burden on his body would be a huge gamble.

"Let him get the Ashes urn in his hands," said Vaughan, who was speaking as part of Test Match Special's delivery of the Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's.

"It's not just about this India series or the Ashes series, I want to see him leading the home Ashes in 2027, I want him to get England to a World Test Championship final.

"Why put the burden on him to play white-ball cricket? It's not about putting pressure on him because he deals with pressure better than anybody, but just let him look after his body and get him playing Test cricket for as long as possible."

Though Key has said England will consider all options, it is thought that Stokes and current white-ball vice-captain Brook remain the only two candidates.

Although batter Brook captained England in five one-day internationals against Australia last year, giving further responsibility to the 26-year-old would also come with risk.

He is still establishing himself in England's white-ball sides and is also a key member of the Test team, so his workload would be a concern.

Furthermore, he would have to demonstrate the maturity to be England captain. Occasionally prone to a clumsy comment in the media, Brook last year was criticised for saying "who cares?" when asked about some of England's dismissals in an ODI defeat by Australia.

The England captain is often required to discuss complex situations, just as Buttler did when addressing the controversy surrounding the fixture against Afghanistan at the Champions Trophy. England could face Afghanistan again at the T20 World Cup early next year.

But Vaughan said if England consider Brook to be ready to be T20 captain, then he is also ready for the 50-over job.

"Harry Brook will be the T20 captain, I think that's being announced soon and that's what we're expecting," said Vaughan.

"So the next T20 World Cup is in a year - if you're saying that Harry Brook is good enough to be the captain in that format with that tournament coming so soon, surely he's good enough to be 50-over captain for that World Cup in 2027?"

Vaughan, England captain for the epic 2005 Ashes victory, was joined by fellow TMS regulars Jonathan Agnew, Phil Tufnell and Ebony Rainford-Brent for the Cowdrey Lecture.

The lecture, named after former England captain Colin Cowdrey, is delivered at Lord's each year.

Making Brook the captain of LOIs could turn out to be a disaster as well if he fails to live up to his potential. He has done very well in Tests but in ODIs he is yet to establish himself. If anything, he has been more miss than a hit in ODIs if compared to his predecessor Morgan (who he replaced)
