The best ever inning sin a cricket world cup final ranked in order of merit

1.Clive Lloyd 102 in 1975-Domination of great pace bowling at a depth rarely ever seen reminiscent of an exhibition or the majestic authority of an emperor..Rarely have Lillee and Thomson being taken to the sword in such a manner.

2.Collis King 86 in 1979-rescured his team from a precarious position at 99-4 like the counter-attack of an army battalion and completely turning the complexion of the game.

3.Viv Richards 138 n.o in 1979-Although overshadowed by partner Colllis played a great innings in his own right blending agression with remarkable organization and temperament.

4.Adam Gilchrist 149.n.o. in 2007-reminiscent of a bomber raiding an airbase .Rarely has an attack been pt to such extreme submission.

5.Aravinda De Silva 107 n.o in 1996-blending the skills of a boxer, technician and artist to enable Sril Lanka to romp home.

Aravinda De Silva.

Came after 2 wickets fell and closed the deal.

No one can match the 2 knocks Aravinda played in WC 1996.

Iconic knocks back to back.

You have a point but just see the video of Clive Lloyd 102 in 1975 -Rarely can you ever witness such a majestic exhibition of strokepay revealing domination in regions of the sublime.

lol how can you forget ponting's inning in 2003 WC final that outbatted india out of the final???

for me, that is the best innings in a final. captain leading from the front and just dominated the game. it psychologically dented indians to a point that sachin played a poor shot in first over against mcgrath and it was over for them

Aravinda's knock came while chasing in the finals against a team which boasted of a bowling attack of Shane Warne, Glenn Mcgrath, Damien Fleming. I think that was a ATG innings. Very hard to beat. SL were 23/2 as well. 243 in 1996 was a big total, it wasn't that easily chased down like today.

De Silva's 107.
Viv's 138
Ponting's 140
Lloyd's 102
Imran's 70
Gambhir's 90 odd

An underrated inns is Mahela's century in 2011. Obviously not better than most of above mentioned inns, but very classy knock for batting aesthetics and given final and situation pressure (came in at 60/2 in 16 ovs and dragged SL from heading for well under par score to marginally under par

Aravinda De Silva for the following reasons:

1. First world cup final for a team that was considered minnow
2. The opponent was a strong Australian team
3. Chasing a challenging total
4. Came to bat when SL was in a little trouble
5. Finished the game

Great analyis.appreciate Sound criteria.Still to me not as entertaining or matched level of domination of Lloyd in 1975.Remember the pressure on Lloyd at 50-3 facing likes of Lillee,Thomson and Gilmour.

1. Clive Lloyd

2. Viv

3. Collis King

We almost agree.Still why Viv above Collis? Was not Collis King morally more impactful if you consider sped at which he accelerated and manner in which he delivered assault?

It’s a bit like comparing the Imran Khan and Wasim Akram Innings in the 1992 Final.

Richards came to the crease at 22-1 in a team with a very long tail. They were completely dependent on Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd, Kallicharran and Richards to stay at the crease to bat their 60 overs.

But nobody else in the Top Five apart from Viv scored more than 20. At Lunch the West Indies were 125-4 after 35 overs and with the last recognised batsmen at the crease. England were totally on top.

It took Richards to hold the innings together, and while he played second fiddle to King, after King got out Richards went beserk too.

Ponting. Complete dominance on his part. Our bowlers looked like school kids that day.
