Best ever Sri Lankan ODI side

I have seen fantasy XI of several teams on this forum . I would like to discuss about what a best Sri Lanka team of all time look like.

Sanath Jayasuria : I do not think there would be any discussions. A very aggressive opener , useful spinner and excellent fielder.

T. Dilshan Another very good OD batsman , can bowl part time , and can also Keep if required.

Mahela Jayawardhane Solid batsman, excellent against spin. Very good fielder as well/

Kumara Sangakara WK of the team . As a batsman one of the best of this era.

A. D. Silva : Mad Genius , inconsistent , but always capable to produce a magical innings. Also , can bowl few overs of spin if required.

A. Ranatunga Ideal finisher , excellent against slow bowlers. Had ability to penetrate the field. Also , excellent tactical captain.

A. Matthews Competent batting all rounder.

Russell Arnold
A floater in the batting order , can be used in any position , excellent fielder and also can bowl.

Chaminda Vaas Excellent left arm seamer , also no mug with the bat.

Lasith Malinga One of the best yorker specialists world has ever seen.

Murlidharan Legend of Lanka Cricket . Off spinner wizard.


What do you guys think of this XI ?

A fast bowler from earlier period instead of Arnold. Or may be Heath.

You got it spot on except one change, Russel Arnold was a part-timer with bowl, so drop him and get in a bowling all-rounder.

Thisara Perera can come in place of him. Very good hitter at 8 and good medium- pace bowling as well.

The bowling looks solid now:-

Perera is inconsistent, another player that I thought could take that spot was Upul Chandana.

You can't find a great bowler in there. Murali, Vaas and Malinga that's it. Perera is a hard hitting batsmen and is a useful one-change bowler. He has got a 140 with the bat and averages 32 with the bowl.

I think in an ODI side, he is a better utility than Chandana, Kulasekara, Arnold or Mendis(not the prime one) as he can impact a game with the bat as well.

Vaas, Malinga and Murali will always bowl 10 overs each, so Perera will do a good job alongside Mathews and Jayasuriya to fill in the rest 20 overs.

He was unable to play zaheer khan 130k bouncers in aus 2012 series.may be we can go for hasaranga in sub continent and a batsmen in sena .Mathews can bowl his quota and sl team is spoilt with bowling options.

He was pretty good against NZ, SA etc. Anyway , if not Id just play the extra batsman at 6 in Ranatunga and push Russel to 7. SL have plenty of bowling options.

Only debatable will be Kulasekra.

Lanka main issue is lack of proper all rounder apart from Matthews . The will lack batting depth .

That is the issue with Lanka team , Mathews is probably only choice , better than Perera.

Yes he was a wicket taker , had issues with no balls though.

But when you play Him , that would mean your batting will be till Vaas at best .

Yes. 3rd pacer position doesn't have anyone decisive.

You have to select one from Zoysa, Dilhara Fernando, Wickramasinghe, Kulasekara etc.

That is a good team. Looks very solid.

Just Tharanga lower down is not useful. Dilshan is better choice , can be part time Keeper , also bowl part time.
At 7 if you have Matthews , it will make the team stronger.

Was looking for a pure batter@7, could not find anyone with 35 avg with decent runs sample size.Neither from Rantunga's team not afterwards.

Matthews averages 40 with strike rate of 80 plus.

His bowling is bonus.
