Best innings ranked in order of merit in test matches amongst batsmen who averaged under 50

1.Graham Gooch 154 v West Indies at Leeds in 1991.
2.V.V.S.Laxman's 281 at Kolkata v Australia in 2001
3.Gundappa Vishwanath's 97 at Madras v West Indies in 1974-75
4.Kim Hughes 100 n.o v West Indies at Melbourne in 1981-82.
5.Asif Iqbal 146 not out at Oval in 1967
6.Stan Mcabe's 232 at Trent Bridge in 1938
7.Rohan Kanhai 118 v Australia in 1972 at Perth
8.Gordon Greenidge 214 not out at Lords in 1984
9.Neil Harvey 151 n.o v South Africa in 1951.
10.302 by Lawrence Rowe in 1974 at Barbados
11.174 by Derek Randall in 1977 at Melbourne
12.Mohamad Azharuddin's 121 at Lords in 1990
13.Majid Khan 167 at Georgetown in 1977
14.Mark Waugh's 125 not in Durban in 1996-97.
15.Mohinder Amarnath's 80 and 91 at Barbados in 1983.
16.Hanif Mohamad's 337 v West Indies at Barbados
17.Zaheer Abbas's 274 at Edgbaston
18.Colin Cowdrey's 102 v Australia at Melbourne in 1954-55
19.Ted Dexter's 70 v West Indies at Lords in 1963.
20.Ian Chappell's 156 v West Indies at Perth in 1975-76

The innings in order of merit listed above can compare and even surpass the best test match innings by batsmen who averaged over 50.Hard to envisage even Tendulkar,Viv Richards or Lara surpass these efforts listed of Gooch,Laxman,Mcabe,Hughes,Greenidge,Vishy,Asif Iqbal and Kanhai.Gooch and Hughes acheived this against the greatest pace attack ever on notorious tracks.Vishy's and Azhar's knocks were exhibitions of supreme artistry. For sheer dominationGreenidge's knock was the pick where he literally blasted out the bowlers like a steam roller mowing grass.Mark Waugh's was another classic knock in a run chase on a testing wicket.Considering the conditions the innings of Neil Harvey and Mark Waugh in 4th innings run chases ,both in South Africa, were true classics. For sheer marathon efforts Lawrence Rowe's was in my view the best innings. For sheer counter-attack few could have surpassed Ted Dexter's 70 at Lords versus the West Indies. For sheer entertainment or aesthetic value Derek Randall's 174 may have surpassed every innings listed.

Easily VVS Laxman's century should be at the top, and not at No 2.

Also, you have missed Md Azharuddin's 115 against South Africa in Cape Town against Donald, Pollock and Kluesener. Very very few batsmen would play such an innings

best test innings ever by batsmen in test cricket who averaged under 50-revised list

Sorry I had to revise and correct list and increase from 20 to 25 to do proper justice.Made a gross error leaving out Sehwag's classic triple century at Multan in 2004 and arguably the likes of Asad Shafiq's 137 in lats list.

How about Brendan McCullum's 302 vs India in 2014? :13:

Sehwag's 201* at galle was the best inngs he has ever played and it was a one hell of knock against peak mendis and murali in their den.The kind of maturity he showed their and placed that inngs was an art.He played with soo much grace against the spinners and took risk only when the ball was pitched in his hitting area.

Murali came came round the wicket against sehwag and kept six fielders on the leg side But sehwag always gave himself some room and hit fours on the offside. He played artfully against murali which frustrated the bowler and forced him to try unnecessary variations with his line and length.

Mendis was proving almost unplayable against the other batsmen but against sehwag in that innings, the mystery spinner looked like a young nervous bowler bowling for the first time in the nets.

The inngs undoubtedly deserves to be atleast in top 5 here

Nothing by KP at all in there is a travesty.

KP has played more than one gun knock to be honest and that too against some ATG bowlers.

Sehwag at Multan, Hashim Amla 311*, Graeme Smith double ton in England, Clarke double against RSA, Cook 260 odd in UAE and KP in India, Daryll Cullinan 274, Gilchrist double against SA in SA off the top of my head.

Misbah Lords ton in 2016 at age of 42-43?

Backed by ATG pushup celebration

Vvs 281,
1) against the second strongest team ever,
2)they won the 1st test by 10 wickets
3)they were demolishing teams even their own backyards whitewashing them
4)they had an atg bowling lineup with champions like McGrath and Warne leading the pack
5) India was following on and had lost 4 wickets and losing this test means series was gone
6)the deficit was more than 270 runs
7)he batted for more than full day without losing his wicket
8)his innings turned the tide of the series
other innings I like to mention is macullam triple against us, the match ended in the draw
