From memory I just recollected Kapil Dev's superb all-round effort versus arguably the best test team ever in West Indies in 1983.He averaged around 42 with the bat including an unbeaten century and captured 24 wickets. The likes of Ian Botham,Richard Hadlee or Imran Khan have not equalled that stature of all-round cricketing performance against the great West Indian team led by Clive Lloyd or Viv Richards.Botham under performed with both bat and ball while Hadlee and Imran excelled basically with the ball although they bought had a test hundred against the world -beaters.

Very close on Kapil's heels is Richard Hadlee's match-winning 19 wickets and averaging above 44 with the bat in New Zealand in 1980 .However I rated Kapil's performance higher because he performed overseas and not on home turf.Hadlee also did not have to bowl to Viv Richards in that series as he was absent due to an eye injury.

Overall I think Kapil Dev overshadowed every other all-rounder as a batsmen against the great West Indies team.

Strange that both Botham or Imran never gave a superlative all-round cricketing performance in a single test series against the calypso giants Speaks volumes about the great talent of Kapil Dev Nikhanj.I can never forget his imperious driving and hooking of the fast men and his great outswingers which got greats like Viv Richards or Clive Lloyd hopping.Swashbuckling with the bat and lethal with the ball.

Correction: Kapil Dev got 17 wickets on the 1983 tour to the West Indies.

Not a bad output considering he bowled in just 6 innings. Also Mohinder Amarnath was one of the unsung heroes of that tour, facing the best/most fearsome bowling lineup ever & scoring loads of runs in WI.

Kapil's stats in the 1982/83 Tour to West Indies -

Runs - 254; Innings - 8; Ave - 42.33

Wickets - 17; Innings - 6; Ave - 24.94; SR- 51.5

Apology for error. Thanks for correction.Still s great performance considering he had no support and bowled in only 6 complete innings.Had only one innings to bowl in Barbados,Georgetown and Antigua.

In the 90/91 series when IK was 38, he avergaed 50.33 with the bat and 13.50 with the ball against the WI. You can argue that Kapil was a better batsman against the WI and Imran the better bowler.

In that series, Imran played 5 innings and scored 151 runs. He bowled in 2 innings and took 5 wickets. And that series was held in Pakistan.

Also WI were well past their peak & into a state of decline, same goes for Viv.

Pak didn;t actually play WI at their peak i.e. 82/83 till 85/86 & fortunately, or unfortunately, we played them over a dozen times in this period.

So much for overall superior performances by Kapil against WI...except for that one series, Imran pretty much out performed him, which shows in the overall numbers as well!

Kapil's performances overall are pretty inconsistant where as Imran is pretty steady in every series

OP, why are you even discussing it? I meant, you won't find many cases where an all rounder did fantastic with bat and ball both against a gun test team. You are not going to have too many cases to compare. Doing just with bat or ball is hard in a series. Doing it with both will be even harder given that we have so few all rounders.

Kapil did :D

Imran did not bowl in the first two tests almost at all. As far as his runs, those are decent stats for a number 6. Not to mention burden of captaincy and a declining body. Nonetheless, IK trumps Kapil in every facet of the game except power hitting.

That's true. With regards to batting, Imran had better temperament. But Kapil was the better stroke player.
