Best player of each of the top 4 teams is also their captain (Is Sarfaraz really our best player?)

Top 4 teams and their captains:

England: Joe Root
India: Virat Kohli
New Zealand: Kane Williamson
South Africa: Faf Duplsesis (Amla and ABD were captains before)

Australia had Smith when he wasnt banned and Aussies were in the top 5.

Why does it make a difference?

According to me if your best player is the captain he is a confirmed name in the playing 11 and nobody can question his stature. He is good enough to inspire players in his team with his own performances. Williamson, Root, Kohli etc are just examples of those.

Sarfaraz Ahmed is a decent keeper batsman but no way he is the best player of the team. Neither does he thinks it himself otherwise would have promoted himself in difficult situations.

Though in reality players should listen to whatever he says, but realistically if the captain isnt doing much the bat or bowl and he wants players to perform, his talk might not be the most convincing one for most players and Sarfaraz's lack of confidence in his own ability is reflected in the team as well.

I guess PCB made a poor decision by making Azhar Ali the captain of the ODIs in 2015 when he should have been made captain of the test side post Misbah while at that time either Malik or Hafeez should have been given the ODIs captaincy. He didnt take the test captaincy when it was offered to him bcz he had to go through a lot as ODI captain which he shouldnt have been in the first place.

To me considering the criteria above in tests it should be Azhar Ali. Otherwise the only confirmed names in test XI are Yasir and Abbas as they both are performers in the format.

In ODIs considering the same criteria it has to be either Babar or Fakhar.

Who do you guys think is out best player in Tests and in LOIs who should be captain of the team?

The captain doesn't have to be the best player in the team but he needs to make the team on merit at the very least. More importantly he needs to have the tactical acumen of the game and be able to lead and inspire his players.

Recent examples of good captains that weren't necessarily the best or most important player in their respective teams

Pakistan - Misbah
Sri Lanka - Ranatunga
England - Vaughan, Strauss
India - Ganguly
NZ - Fleming, McCullum

Sadly Sarfaraz offers none of these and if he weren't already captain he would have been dropped so time ago.

Pakistan have hit rock bottom in tests and Azhar seems the logical (if not only) choice at this stage as he is one of the few that merits his place in the team.

All you have mentioned might not be the best but were the key players or important players of their sides where nobody could have questioned their ability to win their side the match and they all won matches for their teams.

Agreed, historically the captains havent always been the team's best players but in current era captains are the best players of the teams as well which makes sense considering the teams are not that settled as they used to be in 90s of early 2000s and thus not a lot of leaders in the sides are available.

Historically captains for Pakistan since 90s for good duration have been:

Imran Khan
Javed Miandad
Wasim Akram
Waqar Younus
Inzimam
Younis
Misbah (Was 2nd best after Younus who didnt take the captaincy)

All were either best or 2nd best players in the team

Sarfaraz performed a little in the CT match against Srl and look at what it did for the overall confidence of the team. They never looked back.

A confident, leading from the front and performing captain can make a big difference to the outlook of the team.

The only team where Sarfraz could be the best player is Nazimabad team.

Very good thread..OP has backed Sarfraz but realised he was wrong. Others should take note instead of using poor excuses like "weak team". Joe Root and Kane Williamson didn't have strong spin attacks yet they won the series.

If a captain leads from the front it can make a big difference and it inspires the team. If a captain isn't performing, how can he tell others to pull their weight?

Posters on this forum told us Kohli,Root, and Williamson are rubbish captains:)). Look at what they have done in recent weeks. They have led from the front and they have shown they are better T20 tactically than Sarfraz who has no tactics.

I would love to have a star batter as our captain. Really hope Babar can step up.

Good thread Titan24 . You are unbiased and say it how it is.

The words "Sarfaraz Ahmed does NOT have to bat well to deserve his place in the team" should be printed on a large canvas and framed and let it hang on the bedroom walls of Titan24 for creating this contradicting thread and hurting the sentiments of few PPers today. ;)

I didn't agree with that thread. A captain needs to make the team on merit and lead from the front. All the great captains of all led from the front with performance not through tactics.
