Top 4 teams and their captains:
England: Joe Root
India: Virat Kohli
New Zealand: Kane Williamson
South Africa: Faf Duplsesis (Amla and ABD were captains before)
Australia had Smith when he wasnt banned and Aussies were in the top 5.
Why does it make a difference?
According to me if your best player is the captain he is a confirmed name in the playing 11 and nobody can question his stature. He is good enough to inspire players in his team with his own performances. Williamson, Root, Kohli etc are just examples of those.
Sarfaraz Ahmed is a decent keeper batsman but no way he is the best player of the team. Neither does he thinks it himself otherwise would have promoted himself in difficult situations.
Though in reality players should listen to whatever he says, but realistically if the captain isnt doing much the bat or bowl and he wants players to perform, his talk might not be the most convincing one for most players and Sarfaraz's lack of confidence in his own ability is reflected in the team as well.
I guess PCB made a poor decision by making Azhar Ali the captain of the ODIs in 2015 when he should have been made captain of the test side post Misbah while at that time either Malik or Hafeez should have been given the ODIs captaincy. He didnt take the test captaincy when it was offered to him bcz he had to go through a lot as ODI captain which he shouldnt have been in the first place.
To me considering the criteria above in tests it should be Azhar Ali. Otherwise the only confirmed names in test XI are Yasir and Abbas as they both are performers in the format.
In ODIs considering the same criteria it has to be either Babar or Fakhar.
Who do you guys think is out best player in Tests and in LOIs who should be captain of the team?
