There has been a lot of bashing of Bilal Asif's selection and at face value I understand it. His bowling stats are poor, his batting stats are honestly speaking awful in the longer form, and at 32 he has little chance of improvement.
However, we need to have offspinner in the squad, especially given the abundance of left hander's that SL have. Sadly there are very offspinners in Pakistan, I'm sure more knowledgeable posters here can name a few upcoming kids, but right now the cupboard is barren.
So with that in mind for the current batch of domestic players, we have an option of either Agha Salman or Bilal Asif
Agha Salman is obviously far younger and has vastly superior batting record, but its bowling that will be his primary job.
There both players are quite similar. Agha Salman has a better average of 34 compared to Bilal's 38, though Bilal has taken his 38 wickets in 25 innings as compared to Salman who has taken his 41 in as many innings.
Since its vouge to discuss such things, Bilal is also quite tall, I think he must be 6'3 so hopefully, he can get some good bounce as well, which could be quite dangerous on these skiddy pitches.
I also think part of the PCB's rational is that they want Bilal in limited overs, and in t20s I think he can play a part. His batting in limited overs has improved recently and he is a proper hitter of the ball who won't be out of place in the lower order.
For tests, either he or Agha Salman could have been picked.
Either way its smart selection, the kind we have been crying out for frankly. There is a clear deficiency in the squad and at least the PCB are trying to fix it.
I think he can do a soild job for us in the lack of better options
