Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday that had he not cared for Pakistan, he would have accepted former US president Bill Clinton's offer of $5 billion for not carrying out nuclear tests in 1998.

"I would have taken $5 billion from the US for not carrying out nuclear tests if I were not loyal to the country," Sharif, battling for survival in office over corruption and money laundering charges, said while addressing a political gathering in Sialkot in Punjab on Wednesday.

Pakistan had held the tests within days of India - under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee - conducting the nuclear implosions at Pokhran in May 1998.

Sharif said this amid a growing chorus for his resignation as PM by his opponents after an investigation team, tasked by the Supreme Court to probe his offshore assets and companies revealed by the Panama Papers leak, found him and his children guilty of perjury, forging documents and concealing assets. Sharif warned his opponents that if he was being held "accountable" today , it would be their turn tomorrow.

What a patriot!

I remember an old interview of Dr AQ Khan where he mentioned that me and other scientists warned Nawaz if you still don't do the nuclear test now we will go public and tell that we are ready but you are holding back.

Army would have done it regardless of him. This is like him taking credit for the anti-terror operations, ie Zab-b-Azb when in reality he had to be forced and strong-armed to accept it.

Document forger, liar, corrupt. We need a new dictionary for new adjectives for Nawaz.

and look what happened in 1999.

Nawaz Shariff is a crook

Yeah.

Also Nawaz Sharif the corrupt leech acts as if the nuclear attacks were carried out on HIS decision

Every man and his dog knows he had nothing to do with the decision. Army did

Actually, Nawaz Sharif was reluctant to conduct the nuclear tests as he was negotiating a better package with the U.S. He was not in favour of the tests. Now, he takes all the credit. What a clown!

Nawaz is getting desperate, should try something similar like Ranatunga and take the light off him, unable to do so this time.

I recall there was lot of pressure on NS by USA, but he did not have much choice.
if we blame PM for everything bad, then he should claim the credit for "good" things.

To be fair there is some truth to what he is saying but he is giving it a ridiculous spin. Many people who were in the know have mentioned that the Clinton administration had offered Pakistan a very lucrative economic aid package if it didn't go for the nuclear tests but it wasn't as if Clinton was transferring $5 billion in Shareef's bank account. It was the 'carrots' part of the US policy as the stick had failed. And NS had little say in the matter even if he wanted to do something different.

I am surprise(kind of doubt), that they talk to NS about testing or not, what he has to do with it, he is just a PM... They would be making offers to CNC, who is the decision maker, even he could not make that call on his own at that time, all CC have to buy in as well...

That $5B(if that was ever offer), was more for Pakistan, not for his own pocket...That's a lot of money, I am not sure US has that kind of money to deter just a Nuclear test, which was almost inevitable after India's test...

What a joke!!!cannot believe a head of a state is accusing the former president of usa for bribing him😃😃

Yes this is relevant to Panama Papers.

The defense is so unrelated. These guys are pathetic.

Surely he means it was some kind of financial package for the country - military or financial aid etc.

The fact that he thinks that a financial package for the country was intended for him speaks volumes as far as this man's financial corruption is concerned. He genuinely thinks that aid money being provided to a third world country that he governs can be deposited into his personal account.

This. Haha, he is actually implying that he was so good to reject that money in relation to a corruption case, which reveals his intention of how he see's state assets as his own. LOL

Nawaz sharif = traitor. Deserves a long sentence along with his anti-Pakistan family members.

It was out of Nawaz's hands, people had talked about it high and loud, Nawaz was in no position to stop it!

You cannot take panga with ISI, if they warn, then thats the last decision you should make or its the end of your life.

The decision he made was not even significant to the outcome. Take it or leave it the nuclear tests were going to go ahead no matter what.

Again today...

I would be interested to know the actual terms of the package as well. The US aren't a charity, there would have been something in it for them as well.

Hitman I think you don't realise that in Pakistan, only a simulacrum of Democracy exists, good or not - Army plays all the cards and Nawaz Sharif virtually had no choice. Even if he did take the money, the nuclear test would have been conducted anyway.

Then what was preventing Clinton offering the money to the Generals if he really wanted the tests not to go ahead?

Exactly!

Maybe they were offered but not everyone is Nawaz Shairf, he knew nothing was in his hands...

I remember people used to say back in time that when he received a call from America, to stop the nuclear test, he replied that now it was not in his hands since the public already knew and were already overjoyed!

The honorable generals serving the Pakistani army have never garnered such a reputation, whereas Nawaz Sharif's entire family history is based on taking money and bribes on the country for the sake of their personal wealth therefore, Clinton was not foolish enough to even think of doing so.

Also, unlike the absolute monarchy Nawaz Sharif had formed in each of his Governments, there is not a solitary general who takes control of all proceedings, there are multiple generals and officers through the table and USA would have gone to the dogs if he'd offered all of them 5 billion dollars each.

Clinton: Mr Sharif, i will offer you $5Billion if you don't follow India in nuclear arms race.

Sharif: No Mr Clinton I will steal it myself, jo maza chori kar k khanay main hai khareed k khanay main nahi.

It's a massive dilemma in Pakistan. On the one hand a country with military rule is dependent on a good ruler, if you get a bad one you can't exactly vote them out. On the other, when the people get to choose their leader, they invariably end up with a thieving slimeball who will loot the treasury as long as he or she is a position to do so.
