Chandigarh: Panic gripped Chandigarh on Wednesday afternoon after a sudden blast occurred outside the Punjab unit office of BJP in Sector 37-A, prompting an immediate security lockdown across the Union Territory and parts of Punjab.
The explosion took place near the main gate of Kamal Sharma Bhawan in Sector 37 during early afternoon hours, with the sound reverberating across nearby residential blocks. While the exact nature of the explosive is yet to be ascertained, initial reports suggest it was a sudden, localized blast.

No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported so far. However, the incident triggered panic among party staff, visitors, and residents in the vicinity.
Police teams from Chandigarh Police rushed to the spot within minutes, cordoning off the entire area and diverting traffic. Residents were advised to remain indoors as a precaution while a thorough search operation was carried out.
A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and forensic experts examined the site, collecting samples to determine whether an improvised explosive device (IED) or a crude explosive was used. Investigators are also scanning CCTV footage from the office premises and surrounding buildings to identify any suspicious activity prior to the blast.
The incident comes amid heightened political activity and existing security concerns in the region. In January this year, a person was stabbed to death near the same office, raising questions over security in the area.
Following Wednesday’s blast, security has been intensified at key installations including political offices, the Civil Secretariat, and busy markets such as Sector 17 and Sector 22.
Authorities have termed the situation as sensitive and urged the public to refrain from spreading rumours. The administration is expected to issue a detailed statement once the forensic analysis establishes the nature and intent behind the explosion.
