MS Dhoni's cricket acumen is unparalleled. Despite stepping down as India captain in the shorter formats in January 2017, Dhoni has continued to play a significant leadership role in the team. His inputs to India's young spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have helped shape them into world class bowlers.

On Tuesday, Dhoni returned to captain India for the 200th time in ODIs after stand-in captain Rohit Sharma was rested (along with four others) for the final Super Four match against Afghanistan. Dhoni was leading India after 696 days and he could not have imagined Afghanistan fighting the way they did.

Even as India kept picking wickets at the other end, Mohammad Shahzad held the two-time world champions at bay with his fifth ODI hundred. There were some worried faces on the field and when Kuldeep asked for some changes to be made to the field, he got a earful from Dhoni from behind the stumps.Dhoni asked him: "Bowling karega ya bowler change kare?"

This was not the first time Kuldeep got to hear stern words from Dhoni.

In an ODI against Australia (in Indore), Kuldeep had conceded 75 runs and picked two wickets in his 10 overs. He was getting slaughtered by the Australian batsmen and when Dhoni suggested a field change, Kuldeep seemed to disagree.

"In Indore wherever I bowled, it went for six. The ground was so small - even if the batsman did not middle it, it would still go for a six.

"So then, after every 6 I would look at Mahi bhai, he would say, 'it wasn't that far, you should keep it further...

"And then I was bowling my fourth over; the batsman reverse swept me for four...Mahi bhai came to me and said 'remove cover, move him deep and bring point up'...And I said, 'No Mahi bhai, that's okay...' He said 'Am I mad? I have played 300 ODIs.' He got angry. And I did as I was told and then he said: 'this is what I was saying...'"

Atrocious behavior.

But not surprising considering he is a part time cricketer and full time politician these days.

How is his relationship with Kohli actually? before and after captaincy..

This is banter?

Haha... ok.

Yeah, dude. It is. It's very obvious. He does this now and then I've heard it on the stump mic. It's not a big deal. It's obviously said in humour. These players aren't unprofessional that they will actually threaten a bowler with taking him off the attack. Come on now...

Don't get tensed bhai. Lite maams.

Nope it ain't banter.

Its a statement by someone in authority to put Kuldeep in his place and get on with the game.

From the matches I have seen, Kohli defers to Dhoni all the time, which is pretty poor because Dhoni was a very negative ODI captain and that style of captaincy makes the team suffer against good opposition.

Dhoni was an incredible ODI captain.

Here is a video of the incident:

Pathetic from Dhoni but not a surprise. Shows his true face. I hope this is his final series somehow. Keeps making it difficult to admire him any longer.

Dhoni was an incredible ODI captain.

He performed well and led by example BUT he was a terrible tactician. Now I know people will call up the world cup win and the CT "win" (the final was a t20 game) BUT that wasn ot down to Dhoni's tactical captaincy. He was in charge of a team with terrific players in friendly conditions.

Tactically he was very poor, much like Misbah and Kohli, who give away singles, push out fields and are just not attacking enough. Kohli, much like Dhoni before him, is lucky to have flat pitches with striking batsmen and can give away negativity through compiling lots of runs.

Do you remember Dhoni saying something like 'Sree girlfriend nhi hai udhar' to sreesanth? :inti

Lol no. It's just banter. Be a little "sensible", man. I know you are very unhappy with Dhoni being in the team. I understand that. But you don't have to hate on him unnecessarily.

Which part of this do you find 'banter'?

Nonsense. He is a master of reading LO games.

1 WC
1 CT
1 T20WC
4 IPL Trophies
2 CLT20 Trophies

That's not coincide. I can't remember any captain winning these many trophies in the history of the game.

It was obviously a light hearted banter.

Precisely. He has a dry sense of humour. If you see old, off-field videos of him it's clear that this is how he has always been. Even before he started playing for India.

Somehow suddenly people have a problem with this...

How on earth can people claim that after seeing kuldeeps.expression is beyond me. At least with kuldeep it was not a light hearted banter

Somebody should tell Dhoni while he is batting, “shots marega ya Bhojpuri movies dekhega “.

Indian bowling was most toothless under Dhoni's captaincy, and I think we can see why. Despite an inferior Cricketing acumen, Kohli is miles better at handling bowlers.

Tbf this is funny.

Jokes aside and let’s be honest here. Kuldeep is one of the best bowlers going around in cricket these days. If he wants a deep mid-wicket or he wants a certain person in a certain position, he is well within his rights to demand this from any captain. The guy is a wicket taking machine these days, and not simple but crucial, crucial wickets in crucial situations.

I respect Dhoni a lot but he should not have humiliated such a bowler like that. Tbf to Dhoni it’s not like he purposely has it recorded on stump mike, but this is quite embarrassing for Kuldeep

I’m not sure what you mean by toothless, Dhoni is the king of choke holds. No captain knows how to build pressure with average bowlers than he does

Guess that's the reason why weak bowlers we're part of our squad under Dhoni after Zaheer left, coz he was captaining them.

Also why wouldn't you give the bowler his field?

To me it was not said in jest, but each to their own.

You might be right and could be banter, but why would he not give bowler the field he is asking?

A captain who has played 300+ ODIs has the right to think that at times, he knows better than the 24 year old bowler playing his 30th ODI.

He is the captain after all. His decision should be final one on the field.

The same average bowlers have been dismantling batting lineups every since Kohli took over.

No big deal. He was the captain for the match, and anyone who thinks leadership is about democracy need to grow up. All successful great leaders are alpha males and in the end they have the final say on proceedings.

And most of those would have not played anything in their life. Its professional sport, not your weekend league of Grandpas.

21st generation people are way too soft. No wonder most sports arent that competitive anymore.

Back in the day captains and seniors did way more than this to get the best out of their players. Players are not to be pampered but ti be kept on toes.

Go and watch Alan Border threatening an Aussie fast bowler during Ashes tour. Told him loud and clear to get it right or be prepared to sent back to Australia the next flight. Thats a tough leader for you. You will read similar stories about Imran too.

Thank god this pathetic person isnt the captain anymore. Cant wait for him to be out of the team otherwise we ll only keep seeing CSK players in the team.

There's a difference between being tough when someone misbehaves or doesn't play well, and bullying someone needlessly.

Moreover, just look at how frustrated Kuldeep seems to be. There was no need for Dhoni to insult him here and this isn't the first time.

Even Ganguly used to get super mad at times. But you don't see any negative reaction towards him.

Waiting for the opinion of Snowflake on this.

It's like people on here have never worked in a high pressure environment. Even the best of friends start snapping on each other, that doesn't mean anything.

Non issue. A captain decides the field and when a bowler is repeatedly asking for a change, use of such words is not wrong

These type of comments really make me wonder what the “sensible” bit in your nick actually means.

Say what you want about his batting prowess, but MS is the best tactician in India. Period.
