Watching Sky football coverage as usual on a Sunday, and was just thinking how nice it was to see so many pretty women giving expert opinions alongside their male counterparts. Times have certainly moved on and it's great to see women alongside black former players making their mark on the screen as respected commentators. But then it struck me, why don't we ever see any Indians talking about football? Are they really less interested in football than white women? Why is that?

Why specifically worried about Indian Men/Women being on Sky Sports news? There's plenty of other mediums where you can find content to 'knock one out'.

*** is this article. There's reshmin choudhary (Bengali) who presents on BT and does Fifa awards ceremonies

What a filthy thought process. Must be the failed upbringing I guess.

Football is the biggest sport in England, on the main sports channels you are getting 5 or 6 female commentators on each one. Just find it weird that Indians aren't interested in football. I mean this is a cricket forum yet you still get loads of discussion about football teams. But might be because Pakistanis tend to be into football more than Indians. Maybe they are totally focused on cricket.

There was an Indian presenter a few years ago, little fellow called Manesh, but I think he didn't have much screen presence so they quietly let him go.

If you are a fan of non premiership football clubs in England you might be well known with Manish Bhasin

Is that the one who was on Match of the Day for a while before they decided he didn't have enough screen presence for such an important show? I take it he's been relegated to lower league stuff now?

Manish is a top class presenter, rated highly in the industry. But yes haven't seen him much, wonder why? He is Asian but not sure from the Indian background?

Indeed, Manish is a Brit Indian. He is the stand-in on MOTD 2.

Cause India doesn't play soccer. Why would they have an interest in a sport their country doesn't compete in?

Many do here in the UK but mainly Sikhs. But like British Pakistanis stop around 16 and concentrate on education.

There are a lot of British Indian hosts and journalists. I don't know what you are talking about. Reshmin Chowdury is one of them and I am pretty sure there are a lot others as well

All the born and bread UK Indians I know and grew up with are all into Football and support top flight teams. This is a key difference, because if you are raised as a product of the system, you cannot avoid Football in school, even if you hate it!

British indians used to be found in southall and around soho rd, but they have dispersed from these areas and now live all over the place.
As far as football is concerned, theres never been a footballing superstar from the subcontinent and india and pakistan are minnows in football. So no surprise that western counties dont take an interest in subcontinent heritage footballers.

Ironically majority of them have ended up near Wembley, North West London. Harrow, Queensbury, Kingsbury, to name but a few. Proper kak areas.

Enough quality isn't coming through. Football clubs look at talent not colour of skin. In fact many new programmes have started to get Asians into football in the UK and it is said there is a lot of talent but isn't being harnessed.

A British Pakistani captained a England youth side to glory.

Yeah but the whole of london, like birmingham and manchester are kak.
You get the exceptional areas like knightsbridge or parts of solihul or east didsbury, but generally, big cities in the uk are dirty and nasty. I live out of city now, much cleaner and less crime, because not so many riff raff.

Let me tell you a true story.
Over 30 years ago, i used to play cricket with my mirpuris chums, but thats a different story and i used to play football with my indian chums, mostly sikhs and chamars. We once played outdoor 5 a side against a rich mirpuri guy and his team and battered them 10 - 0.
The guy got peed off and challenged us the following week, we accepted. The next time we came, the rich mirpuri kid had 4 guys from the youth team of a famous premier league team in his side!
We ran circles around them and beat them, i think it was 5 -2 iirc.
Those guys were in shock that a bunch of asians were so good at football. There told us to turn up to trials for the youth team of this premier league club. I was like the second/third best player in the team, the best player was this sikh guy and he was an amazing footballer, 6ft tall, he had amazing control of the ball, didnt run , but stroll pass opponents and would do a little flick with the ball, over the foot of an opponent who was trying to tackle him.
Anyway, i didnt go to the try outs because my parents wanted me to go to uni.
But my mate went and believe me, he had nothing good to say about it. Basically they took one look at him and rejected him. This was 30 odd years ago, but i dont see much change in football in the uk, forget about the premier league, not even in the championship or in the lower leagues or even in the semi professional leagues, do you see many british asians.
Now i dont expect to see many, if any pakistanis/mirpuris because most can't pass a ball to a team mate 10 metres away, but there are some amazing sikh footballers, but no one is interested in giving them a chance, not even in semi professional leagues.

He was relegated from the Premiership and the had his show right after the premier league MATCH OF THE DAY.

When one club was promoted to the Premiership they had a sign saying GOODBYE MANISH :D

Football attracts the lowest common denominator.

Test cricket is where the action's at.

Glad Indians - be it in India or Britain have their sporting priorities straight.

No t20 is where the money, fame and all the perks associated with it is at. And how many brit asians are in those teams - moeen ali, rashid adil, samit patel, ravi bopara are the main ones and a few in domestics, still not that many, but you have a better chance than in football, if you are asian.

Majority of Indians find Test cricket very boring.
In India t20, ODIs draws the crowd not in test cricket except in big cities.

I doubt there ever will be a British Asian star. Football coaches are ruthless and could care less about appeasing the Sub continent diaspora market

Do you see how many female presenters there are these days? Sky Sports alone must have half a dozen. Do you really think British women are more into football than British Indians? It's a genuine question by the way, for all I know they may well be. I know British Pakistanis are super keen on it, you even have separate threads on here for individual teams and posters with names and avatars based on their favourite clubs.

You don't really have to be into sports to become a presenter. You just need to have a good screen presence and people with journalism degree could become presenters.

Agreed. I think this is why Indians aren't really that apparent on sports shows, they lack the screen presence.

What is meant by screen presence in this context?

Presenters or panel experts are usually picked to provide insight or expert opinion which will be taken seriously by the viewers, or sometimes just some charisma which makes viewers want to tune in. Indians aren't really associated with football, or sports in general.

You mean Brit Indians? You mean in comparison to Pakistan?

Cant speak for other Indians but I personally dont like any club sports let it be premier league, LaLiga or even IPL for that matter. A club sport can never bring out the same passion as playing for country does. Since football is predominantly a club sport, I take no interest. Ofcourse, world cups and Euros are different matter.

In Britain, club football is probably followed more fanatically than the national side. I don't know where you live, but most people who live here would confirm it. It's very healthy actually, if Pakistani cricket had such strong local foundations you can bet their national team would be churning out much better players.
