Global developer Emaar Properties joined the UAE in celebrating India's 68th Republic Day celebrations with a spectacular illumination of the iconic Burj Khalifa with the colours of the Indian national flag.

The visual expression of the tri-colours underlined the solidarity of the UAE and its people with India, with which the nation shares strong cultural and trade ties. The illumination will be held on January 25, a day prior to India's Republic Day, as well as on January 26.

The LED show will be at 6:15pm, 7:15pm and 8:15pm on both days with The Dubai Fountain performance complementing the grand illumination.

This year's celebration is even more special with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attending the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi as chief guest. His Highness is leading a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials and entrepreneurs to the country.

Emaar Properties has significant presence in India, one of its key international markets. The company had recently restructured its operations in the country to drive its ongoing developments and explore new growth opportunities.

At 828 metres (2,716.5 ft), the 200 plus storey Burj Khalifa has 160 habitable levels, the most of any building in the world.

We should have colors to represent earth and light those up. Who cares about this nationalistic attitude.

I hope India uses its new found friendship with the Emiratis to demand basic human rights for her (and other South Asian) immigrants to the UAE. Right now they are very poorly treated.

What for? are they trying to attract Indians to come over so they can kill themselves trying to earn a couple of quid in a day? The only thing which they illuminate is modern slavery.

Are you kidding me.! There is already a huge Indian population in the middle east .. Its the preferred work destination for Indians in the southern states especially..

By 1999, the population of Indian migrants in the UAE, which stood at 170,000 in 1975, was at 750,000. The estimated population of Indians in the UAE as of 2009 is near 2 million. Indians constitute 42% of the total UAE population.

Reading the shared article will help.

In Dubai at least, Indians form a huge portion of the privileged class, along with Brits.

The types that drive Bentleys because Mercedes is "below" them

There is a huge middle class as well.

There are laborers, mostly from UP/AP.

Unlike 80s though it is much harder to lure professional Indians doing good in their professions back home; a good Indian doctor/engineer will be better off in India than Dubai ...

And there is another subclass of Indians, exclusively Keralite, more prevalent in the other 6 emirates than Dubai (which has a better mix between north and south), who have long term plans, and while they are not "rich" like Dubai Indians, they send a lot of rupees back home to build homes etc (interestingly Kerala supposedly has a problem now with empty homes built by NRK's, as they built large homes but their children settled abroad)

Ummah brotherhood is bigger than friendship bro, hope u demand the same from ur family like Arabs!

Frankly, such news don't impress me anymore. India has arrived on the world stage is a known #fact. So every sensible country wants to be in our good books.

Does that excuse basic human rights for the employees who are often exploited?

This is basically a PR move by the Emiratis of acknowledging the incredible sacrifices Indians (an a lot o f desis in general ) have made for the growth of the Emirates. Of course , the fact that we are treated badly there (the unskilled labour classes) is conveniently regretted in the hoo-ha of seeing our flag on the Khalifa.

We are the single biggest group of NRI's in the UAE, (overall 2nd after UP in the whole Middle east, but that migartion has been more recent) .

Though there are a fair number of the super wealthy elites among Keralites there (See MA.Yusuf Ali ,Ravi Pillai etc, the 25th & 38th richest Indians http://www.forbes.com/india-billionaires/list/#tab:overall ) vast majority of Keralites there are middle class or unskilled labourers..

As a child of an NRI family myself, I can tell you that even now , for a vast majority of Keralites , Dubai is the ultimate dream work destination .. (Although the more educated section have started looking at immigration oppurtunities to Aus, US & Canada).

Our state's entire economy is more or less dependent on the money the immigrants send back to India. Also the higher percentage of educated /semi educated (english speaking) population and huge deficit in employment opportunities at home have led to large scale migration to the gulf since early 60's.

Also the fact that Kerala had trade relations with the middle east and persian gulf even predating Islam & Christianity meant that the Hindu population here were not opposed to traveling overseas due to religious reasons , as was the case in some of the northern states in India .

The people who go there most often take their families, brothers and cousins over and settle down. many of the unskilled labours get paid far less than they would make for the same job in India, but the Tag of an NRI is only beaten by the "Government Job" tag in our state..

The newer generations (millenials) stay there and try migrating to the west while the older ones build huge houses and buy fancy cars back home as symbols of their prosperity (gulf-money as we like to call it).

Many make plans to return someday, but the lure of losing out on all the wealth that the desert gives, is too much for many . As a result you find those huge lavish empty houses here, which are occupied for a few weeks /days in between years of emptiness. Also sad are the lives of many wives in Kerala, who live for 20-30 years barely seeing their husbands once or twice in years, if the husband doesn't have the financial stability to take his family overseas.

Arabs seem to come in for a lot of criticism on these pages, and even their news sites are often filled with hateful messages from Indians so I think we have to applaud the Arabs here in taking the initiative and showing respect for their Indian ex-pat population.

Well done!

.

In the UAE at least, there are hardly any unskilled laborers who are Keralites; they work unskilled jobs like in groceries, delivery men etc, but almost never are they actual laborers (Indians who are tend to be from AP and UP etc).

And there is a huge middle class, along with the Yusuf Ali's of course....

Fact: UAE has upper level Indians who drives Bentley.
Fact: UAE has middle level Indians who drives Mercedes.
Fact: UAE has lower (labor) level Indians who just work hard to eat 3 meals a day and are poorly treated by UAE elites.

That's like any where in the world expect the treatment of labor class.

Don't think there is a better place to see Indians & Pakistani's working alongside and getting alone well like the UAE.. Hunger and the struggle for life brings people together especially amongst the working classes..
You go to Europe or US the people are a lot more well set and can afford to live amongst mostly their own . This pretty much reinforces the misconceptions & hatred they would have had at home ..

The Burj Khalifa also displayed the colours of the Australian national flag as the country''s national day also fell on January 26.

This is the least the Emirates could do after all the thing was built by Indian slave labour...

Good to see an Islamic country like the UAE extending out its best wishes to India. At least they don't let the little things like the pure hatred and revulsion that the Indian govt. has for Islam and Muslims get in the way.

Modern UAE has been built stone by stone courtesy the hard work of Malayalis and Tamils, they should never forget that. I would prefer them treating the migrant workers better, lighting up their buildings in Indian flag colours is eye-catching but there are more pressing matters.

Words of reason.

These things should never be brushed under the carpet.

Well they build the thing to show off with it, so why wouldn't they light it up in a flag of choice? There are only 195 to choose from.

There country and they can do whatever they want. Pity those who feel the UAE should do what is right for Pakistan being a Muslim country. We should always do what is right by Pakistan and only Pakistan. Have never believed in the Ummat thing, there is no example in history when Muslim's were one people at all like the Zaid Hamid's of this world keep pushing down our throats. Jiski lathi ooski bhens, might has and always been right in the world we live in.
