ISLAMABAD: Three times he has ruled Pakistan, and three times he has been deposed. Now Nawaz Sharif, the “Lion of Punjab”, is being forced to watch the triumph of his great rival Imran Khan from behind bars.

Nawaz, imprisoned since mid-July, is starting one of the last chapters of his long career from a cell, where the 68-year-old is serving a 10-year sentence for corruption – the Avenfield reference case.

His daughter and political heir Maryam is similarly imprisoned, while his wife Kulsoom is fighting cancer thousands of miles away in London. Nawaz himself is also in frail health.

And the great gamble he took in returning to Pakistan days ahead of the July 25 elections have failed to galvanise support. Instead, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman is set to take the oath as prime minister and usher in a “New Pakistan” on August 18.

“Now is the time to see how history remembers him,” says Muhammad Zubair, a senior member of Nawaz’s eponymous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Such a scenario seemed unthinkable a year ago when the PML-N supremo, then a popular prime minister hailed for his infrastructure projects, seemed to be moving towards easy re-election.

The Supreme Court shattered his momentum on July 28, 2017, deposing him following a corruption investigation. He was banned from politics, and finally jailed just two weeks before the vote.

The “Lion of Punjab”, named for the wealthy province which is his family stronghold, has insisted that this party’s fall was orchestrated.

Imran, who led the cricket World Cup victory in 1992, has dismissed the claims, as have the institutions blamed for political engineering.

But Sharif is not alone: observers have described the campaign as the ‘dirtiest’ in Pakistan’s history because of widespread allegations of interference in the electoral process. The opposition is protesting against alleged rigging in the July 25 polls.

Supporters say Pakistanis will remember that Sharif and daughter Maryam were in London with his ailing wife when their jail sentences were handed down.

‘Sharif in no mood to mend fences’

They chose to return to Pakistan, where they were arrested as soon as they landed.

But the hoped-for surge of support for his party – led into the campaign by his less charismatic brother, Shehbaz – has not materialised. Once ubiquitous in the media, Sharif has issued no public statement in weeks.

“They wanted to sell this politically. But the gamble didn’t pay off,” analyst Fahd Husain said.

Sharif is “being punished only for one reason, and that reason is that he is not bowing his head” to the military, Mushahidullah Khan, a former PML-N minister, told AFP.

Imran Khan, who first instigated the corruption charges against Sharif, has termed PML-N’s claims as “conspiracy theories” and a ‘smokescreen’.

The court decision ousting Sharif may have been controversial, but repeated accusations over decades mean he is widely perceived as corrupt. Critics dismiss him as a leader who stole billions from Pakistan, giving Khan’s vow to end graft an extra edge.

But Sharif’s supporters staunchly frame his ouster as part of the long battle between the civilian and military leadership for power in Pakistan, whose history is punctuated by coups and assassinations.

“(Sharif) is fighting for civilian supremacy. If he is going to jail, it is worth giving that sacrifice,” says PML-N’s Zubair.

Sharif has been down and out before. Expelled from power in 1993 on suspicion of corruption, he won the 1997 election, only to be ousted and exiled after a military coup in 1999.

He returned in 2007, and took power once more in 2013.
Zubair said he will not fight for a fourth term. Now, it is his political legacy at stake.

Saving that might not be up to him. “If (Imran Khan’s party) does well, Nawaz Sharif’s narrative will be diluted,” said the analyst Husain.

The PML-N has criticised the conditions of Sharif’s detention. Sharif, who suffers from high blood pressure, was briefly hospitalised in late July.

Al-Azizia, Flagship references: Sharif to be produced in court on Aug 13

“He looks far better than the first time,” Zubair, who visits Sharif regularly, told AFP.

The ex-prime minister is “not in the worst possible cell”, and even has a television with three channels – state-run PTV, a weather channel and a sports channel.

But he is in solitary confinement. “He is not even allowed to meet Maryam, other than on Sundays,” Zubair said. His fate has divided once-fervent supporters.

“Many PML-N leaders told him not to speak against the army and judiciary, but he didn’t listen,” said Naja Nisar, an estate agent in Rawalpindi.

Kashan Arshid, a former party youth leader in Rawalpindi, is unwilling to write Sharif off.

“It’s the third time he’s suffered. Each time … people say he is finished,” Arshid said.

“But every time he comes back, stronger. The lion will roar again.”

Lol at him being a lion

May he rot there for longer

caged lion

How could i waste time reading something with such title.

Nawaz sharif, his corruption not withstanding, has redeemed himself by taking the brave decision to come back and face imprisonment. One day pakistanis will realize that they punished the wrong guy, who is a true well wisher of pakistan and a champion of democratic values.

Caged Lion a term coined to counter cornered tiger? Desis love being the Ferocious trapped animals.

There has been only one Lion of Punjab in last two centuries and his name ended with a Singh and not Sharif.

He had the bravery to come back to Pakistan and face the music unlike a certain other commando who would prefer to live in luxury in UAE.

Not bravery but because he lived in a bubble. Can say stupidity on his behalf.

Didn't Musharraf come back the first time too. Was he not arrested at the airport?

So criminals coming back to serve sentences is brave.

Yes it is a brave decision in a country where cowards like Altaf Hussain and Musharaf are scared to return back to face the music.

NS could have easily spent the last few years of his life lavishly outside the country but he came back to serve his punishment. It was not some Pakistan's strong judiciary backed by the Army who caught and got him extradited to Pakistan, he came on his own free will.

I am sure PTI supporters would have called him a coward and lacking the balls to face the court's if he has chosen to stay in England but now that he has returned, they still it hard to appreciate his guts.

So this is what the world (Pakistan) has come to?

Applauding a criminal for returning to the country to face justice?
They were right on one out of two counts.

1. Come back and the people will march for you: Fail

2. Come back and some people will consider you brave: Correct.

Stop glorifying convicted criminals serving the right sentence in the right place.

The Noora plan was to get back the elder goon in Pak so the younger goon organize a tour de force with "street-power", conveniently forgetting that PML N has none - Showbaz did absolutely nothing, and has been bashed by Maryam's social media team as many think he got what he wanted, that is, to sideline Nawaz/Maryam so he and Shehbaz could somehow get the leadership of the mafia.

Ofc they didn't expect a PTI win, esp. in Punjab, either, so their plan failed as well, and there will be no NRO for them. In fact Showbaz should brace himself for the winter in Adiala too (Model Town massacre, etc).

Also, Zardari spent more time in jail for corruption (I think close to 10 years, and was in fact elected to the Pak senate while there), has been subjected to physical torture as well (while Sharif can't stay ten days without getting "sick"), I hope you also salute his "courage".

Stop this nonsense. He came back because if he didnt his daughters career was over. I will always call him a coward because any loser that robs a poor country and its people is a coward. Allah gives him the responsibility to guide a country of 200mn and what does he only think of- family and friends. He like you needs to remember that crooks are cowards, never brave.

Nooras and their pathetic morals.

It's funny when people call Nawaz Sharif 'Jamhooriat ka champion" , the man who has played worst role against democracy in our history and has made significant personal gains getting money from Bin Laden to ISI. Also conspired to throw multiple governments and only became democratic when his lifetime wealth is in danger. Itna bara plastic democrat life main nahi dekha

The Nooras have lost the argument on this along time ago. The losers run when challenged and thats why they read these pages, froth at the mouth but dont dare come and debate because they know they dont have a leg to stand on.

Responsibility? If our civilian leaders (inc Nawaz) were given responsibility our country would have been in much better state.

Yes we have seen the amazing work by these “democrats”over the last 10 years. Debt has trebled and what have we got for it

MNS didn't come back for his supporters or for country. He came back to safeguard his empire and to further lengthen the era of fooling his supporters. Panama case was just a tip of iceberg, With Fawad Hassan Fawad in jail, we will see dirtier sides of Sharif Clan.

If someone is buying his narrative and supporting MNS, kindly explain Ishaq Dar fleeing away when his leader is in Pakistan. Why Sharif Clan wants Dar to be not in Pakistan ?

Richard Nixon resigned in shame due to fear of impeachment.

Nawaz Sharif...

Btw, just to clarify, Musharraf would have faced death for treason, not imprisonment!

Responsibility? If our civilian leaders (inc Nawaz) were given responsibility our country would have been in much better state.

Was PMLN selling mangos for past 5 years? If they didnt have responsibility as you say; they should have left government and held a fresh election.

I really think you are smarter than that.

So Nawaz had all the power to steal billions, deploy 1000s on family security, waste borrowed billions on useless projects for personal/family image building, murder innocent people inside their own houses in model town but didn't have power/responsibility to empower institutions and improve economy/investment etc??

I hope you are not one of those who believe Army uses 90% of budget living lavish lives, steal all the money but poor politicians get accused of corruption.....this is most absurd argument we usually hear from ignorant people.

I agree, that post was one of the most ludicrous i have seen on the forum.

People like you, alongside your "heroes", are detrimental to Pakistan.

I do understand people not liking NS for his track record to work with military regime from time and again to derail democracy and throwing his fellow politicians under the bus, during his 30 years of political career.

What I don’t understand from Pakistanis, there love affair for ISI and Military Establishment, who were on the other side of the bargain, weather it was NS or most tier 2 politicians(btw there market is very hot in this Military democracy for 4 decades), Military was much worse or atleast equal players in derailing democracy or making political culture a epic center of lota cracy...Every elections we see 40/50 seats swing, by these lotas backed by military, party does not matter, result is same....

Why there is so much love for ISI and Military Establishment, what they have done to earn this unconditional love ?? 🧐🧐🧐

Just to point out Sher = Tiger not lion. Lion in Urdu is 'babr sher'.

This mistake has become very common and it annoys me.

What I don’t understand is the love people have for crooks and their fascination with the military establishment... everything is blamed on the military. They are so ignorant that they almost fool themselves into believing that the military is stealing the government budget and hence from the people of Pakistan.

More likely those that enter a thread to defend a caged rat are morally bankrupt, just like the rat they choose to defend.. complicit in their support of muderers.

There is nothing in Al Azizia and Flagship references aswell just like Panama nonsense.

DG NAB today Rwp today met Judge Arshad of Accountability Court for 90 minutes in his chamber. Highly questionable and Nonsense Basheer was also there. Unusual meeting caught by a Tv channel and Mangee who himself is facing reference said that he discussed Air Conditioner problems. Stooges of Deep State.

Agenda on hand most probably was how to send the lion back in cage.

Even if N Sharif is sent to Jail again in these frivolous politically motivated references he will come out through high courts later (provided his ailing health sustains it)

Standing for Civilian Supremacy and equal rule of Law are his biggest crimes. Same goes for Ishaq Dar.
