ISLAMABAD: Former finance minister Ishaq Dar is among the shortlisted candidates of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for the upcoming Senate elections, sources in the party told Dawn here on Tuesday.

The names of the candidates were shortlisted at a meeting of the newly-constituted 15-member parliamentary board presided over by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, Mahtab Ahmed, Amir Muqam, Hamza Shahbaz, Pervaiz Rashid and Musha*hidullah Khan attended the meeting.

The sources said the party leadership was considering giving one seat from Punjab to Pir Hameeduddin Sialvi or his nominee. Pir Sialvi, who was a member of the Senate in 1980s, has recently withdrawn his call for a countrywide protest against Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on the Khatm-i-Nubuwat issue.

The sources said self-exiled former finance minister Ishaq Dar was the first priority of the leadership, but keeping in view the possible legal and technical challenges which Mr Dar could face at the time of scrutiny of his papers, the party leadership was considering the option of asking his son Ali Dar to also file the papers as a covering candidate.

The 67-year-old Dar, who is currently in London undergoing medical treatment, had been declared an absconder by an accountability court in December last year in a corruption reference after he repeatedly failed to join the trial. He is being probed on charges of amassing assets beyond his known sources of income.

The sources said that Mr Sharif after consulting the party leadership left for Lahore to have a final consultation with his brother and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Before leaving for Lahore, Mr Sharif also met Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party president Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who assured his party’s complete cooperation to the PML-N in the Senate elections.

According to the sources, prominent shortlisted PML-N candidates are Dr Asif Kirmani, Saud Majeed, Haroon Akhtar, Tehmina Daultana, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Tariq Fatemi, Kamran Michael, Pir Sabir Shah, Zafar Dhandla and Nuzhat Sadiq.

“Yes, Ishaq Dar’s name is on the list of the possible party ticket-holders for the Senate elections,” Raja Zafarul Haq told Dawn after the meeting.

In reply to a question, he said they had sought the opinion from the legal team of the party and they were of the view that the physical presence of the candidate at the time of election was not necessary.

Mr Haq said the party had received some 114 applications for the tickets only from Punjab, from where the party is expected to win all the seats. He said the list of candidates might be announced in a day or two.

Mr Sharif has called another meeting of the parliamentary board on Wednesday to finalise the party tickets.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already announced the election schedule, according to which Feb 8 is the last date for submission of the nomination papers whereas the polling will be held on March 3.

Despite winning the largest number of seats during the 2015 Senate elections, the PML-N had to face great difficulties in the upper house where opposition parties led by the Pakistan Peoples Party remained the key players. However, the PML-N this time hopes that it will be in the driving seat in the Senate after the March elections.

The PML-N is expected to have a clean sweep in Punjab by winning all the 12 seats, including reserved seats for women, technocrats and minorities, due to its absolute majority in the provincial assembly. The PML-N has 310 MPAs in the 371-member Punjab Assembly, followed by 30 MPAs from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

Similarly, the PML-N is all set to win both the seats from Islamabad – one general and one technocrat seat. Mushahid Hussain Sayed, who is among those four PML-Q senators retiring in March and who is known for changing his loyalties, is all set to become the senator again from Islamabad on the PML-N ticket.

At present, the PML-N has 27 senators and nine will be retiring in March. Ishaq Dar, veteran politician Mohammad Hamza, Saud Majeed and Dr Asif Kirmani are among those PML-N senators retiring on March 11.

The party is expected to win at least 15 seats and its total membership in the upper house can reach 33. The PML-N having 16 MPAs in the KP Assembly is expected to win one seat from the province whereas its fate in Balochistan is uncertain.

So a guy who has sucked the country's exchequer dry and is on the run will be a Senator.... but but but this sazish by establishment.

Its as if the only qualification to be elected to office for the Nooras is that you have to be criminal.

Did anyone watch Muqabil with Rauf Klasra and Amir Mateen?

The senator list PMLN presented is shocking.

They have money launderers, tax evaders, Rao Anwar type criminals, corrupt and gangsters from UK (Zubair Gul).

Pretty shocking even by PMLN standards.

I love that show.... I watch it religiously everyday. They are so fair and balanced. They bash everyone by equal measure. Such journalists of integrity are hard to find in Pakistan.

and yes you are right.... the PML-N list of Senators is not even fit to be thalaywalay at a sabzi mandi. What else you expect from them.

Yes they also said some PTI senator candidates are rich, at least none of them are criminals, money launderers, gangsters. PTI did award ticket to young and educated Faisal Javed Khan which is good to see.

PPP gave ticket to a Hindu woman from poor background which is good to see but some of their tickets went to brothers and sisters of existing MNAs.

PTI rejected nominations of CM Pervez Khattak's son in law and education minister Atif Khan's brother.

I knew they were talking about some big, rich guy getting the PTI ticket and Faisal Javed Khan as well (he is a gem).... but the rest I do not recall since I usually put on the show at work and just listen in while I do my work so sometimes I drone out what they are saying.

I do remember them discussing that PPP offered Aitizaz Ahsan a ticket from Sindh but he rejected on the grounds that he is from Punjab and it would be akin to stealing a seat from Sindh. I'm a big fan of this guy.... I don't know why he continues to align himself with snakes like Zardari.

Ishaq Dar's Senate nomination papers rejected: ECP

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), on Monday, rejected former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s nomination papers of the minister for the upcoming Senate elections.

According to Express News, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had earlier contested his nomination in the Senate elections.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced on Thursday that it would challenge the nomination papers of former finance minister and senior PML-N leader Ishaq Dar, filed for the Senate elections, due to a pending corruption reference against him.

Last week, PTI announced that besides challenging Dar’s nomination forms they would also challenge nominations of other PML-N leaders who have been alleged of committing corruption. The party added that they have formed a two-member committee to challenge those nominations.

Nominations on behalf of Ishaq Dar have been submitted from Punjab province in two different categories which includes a general seat and a technocrat seat.

A statement issued by party’s central media department says that Dar is not only involved in money laundering but also absconding from different courts in graft cases pending against him.

“It’s utterly shameful to learn that PML-N has nominated a plunderer like Dar for senate elections,” the statement added.

Thats why waleed88 has desperately avoided answering the question. Do Nooras have any morals? If criminals are allowed to legislate, how long before we paedophiles legislating on children.

Im sorry convicted of what exactly?? Lying about the means of his income. A salary which he didn't even receive. No reason of conviction was found, whatever was said in the media about 30,000 crore ki chori. Thats a good joke, you just find whatever random number you find and it on the media.

He hasn't been convicted of anything yet I am sorry, what sort of justice system do you follow? Is he arrested? Is he going to jail? Where is the prison sentence? When people say he is convicted, they are watching too much ARY.

Why is the guy on the run? Isnt he a proclaimed offender or not?

Like all Nooras you need to learn to read. Spend time reading the full SC decision and you will see the Iqama was only one of the reasons. Despite your poor comprehension skills below is a summary from Dawn.

I think you got a week to wait, i think you may not have realised but the game is over. For a start Maryam is a gonna, fake docs, fake law firms, fake fonts and fake staples. As for your king even he knows it and that decision is coming in the next 3 weeks. .

Are you ok with a proclaimed offender to be elected? A simple yes or No

Regardless of the date of when the font was available, the font has been in the market since 2005. Calibri font was not mainstream, but it was available in the Windows Vista edition, which alot of people had. The calibri scandal has been debuffed, and it is no measure of whether the documents were fake or not.

Yes I am. Even Imran Khan is an offender if the Sadiq and Ameen clause is applied on him. He is Sadiq or Ameen as of now, but all that can change when a new judge becomes the chief justice

Nooras dreams dont make it true,he is not. He is in the country. But the question remains still, should Dar be a Noora Senator as he is on the run.

Oh dear, lies and more lies. For a start the company that attested the deed has been dormant since the early 90s. And as much as like you to believe Robert Radley destroyed the argument.

Can the Mods add the video from Maryams trust deed thread. Just for our deluded Noora friend. The video is of the 1st hand account of the Dawn reporter.

Any legal implications for this? He is literally admitting to a bit of corruption.

Lets see, i think the 1st judgements are pretty close. The Font case is proven and others have also been proven. Lets see the sentences.

It is not conclusive proof, which is why it was never used in the final verdict. The crime was not mentioning his salary that is it. Nothing to do with calibri or whatever PTI supporters like to make it about

Nooras will not accept any corruption evidence against the Sharifs but it doesnt mean that the evodence hasnt been provided and doesnt exist.
The SC could not pronounce on the fake docs, the Qatari letter etc because its not a court to hear the ins and outs, of such cases. Thats why they sent the cases back to the accountability courts for those.
The game is over as you will discover in the next few weeks. The Robert Radley expert testimony totally destroyed any hope they had. It wasnt just the Calibri but also the staples. I think that you should pray for your duffer because like his daughter he is a gonna.

Did he actually say this??? :))

I know he is pretty useless without parchis but i still can't believe he would be dumb enough to say something like this?

Hard to believe this without video but then we also have his video where he says to judges "Tumhain kya agar meray asaasay income se zyaada hain" :))

The duffer is not only crooked, he is also stupid.

PML-N is a party of crooks, thugs and rapists. Those who support them need serious counselling.

Today The SC asked why a proclaimed offender has been elected as a Senator. I think the crooked Nooras are about receive another slap. The SC Judge Showed the corrupt judge from LHC today.

Supreme court cancel Ishaq Dar senatorship! well done SC!
