Canada Super 60: Yuvraj Singh launches new T10 league in Canada

Legendary Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh is set to launch a T10 league in Canada in collaboration with UK-based company Star 333 Sports Inc and Cricket Canada. The league will be called Canada Super 60, with its first edition slated to begin in July this year.

The organizers are describing the league as a ‘visionary platform designed to promote cricket’s growth and popularity in Canada’ and North America. They believe that the short, 60-ball each-side format can attract not only the traditional audiences but also generate growth of the sport in a new base.

“I am delighted to lend my leadership and vision to the Canada Super 60 League," Yuvraj said in a statement. “This tournament has the potential to be a stepping stone for the future of cricket in this region. Combining local talent and international stars is a recipe for something truly special. I am excited to be part of this journey and can’t wait to see the impact this league will have on cricket in North America."

The league will launch with eight teams comprising both local and international players. There will also be a fixed quota of players from associate nations. The inaugural season will take place in Toronto.

Crucially, the Canada Super60 League will feature both men’s and women’s leagues, becoming the first competition in North America to feature both men’s and women’s competitions from its inaugural year.

Pakistan's Naseem Shah, England's Alex Hales and Australia's Chris Lynn are among the more than 1,350 cricketers who have put their hands up for the new Canada Super 60 league, organizers say.

The league features the short-form 10-over version of the game. Matches last about 90 minutes with each team batting for 10 overs (60 balls), making for all-action contests with batsmen swinging for the boundary in search of runs.

The Canada Super 60 is set to launch in July at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ont.

In contrast, the Global T20 Canada tournament, which has taken place at the same Brampton venue since 2018, features the 20-over version of the game.

Like Global T20 Canada, the eight teams in the new league will be made up of Canadian talent, international stars and a quota of players from associate nations.

Organizers say 1,135 male and 235 female players from 34 countries offered to take part in advance of registration closing. They include England's Jason Roy, South Africa's Rilee Rossouw and Shamar Joseph of the West Indies plus Pakistan's Fatima Sana and New Zealand's Maddy Green.

The six men's and two women's teams will be stocked by a draft.

"I’m absolutely thrilled to see some of the biggest names in world cricket signing up for the Canada Super 60," assistant tournament director Kyle Coetzer, a former Scottish star cricketer, said in a statement. "Their involvement will elevate the competition and provide invaluable exposure to Canadian players, fostering a sense of community and excitement among fans locally and globally."

Organizers say additional dates for the new league will come later.
