Despite this squad having tried and tested failures like Shehzad, Hafeez, Azhar, and Junaid, there is a bright ray of hope that comes in the shape of two excellent batsmen: Haris Sohail and Babar Azam, as well as two ferocious fast bowlers in Hasan Ali and Mohammad Amir, not to mention the fresh all rounder: Shadab Khan.
For the first time ever, us fans will have something to look forward to. For the past few ICC events the dedicated and keen fans knew, deep down, that we had little to no chance in winning with the average bunch of players that were selected. The reactions to the squads of the 2013 champions trophy, 2015 World Cup, and the 2014-16 t20 world cups are a testament to this.
I firmly believe that we are incapable of beating teams like England, Australia, India, South Africa in this tourney with our mediocre top order and the lack of power hitters, but we will witness something great in this tournament for once.
Pakistani fans will witness the rise of future superstars.
Haris Sohail and Babar Azam will perhaps replicate or better the exploits of past middle order legends like Inzi and Yousef. They have it in them to go big, and we will see them together for the first time as Haris returns from his injury. A legendary partnership may perhaps brew that could yield thousands of runs.
Hasan Ali has shown tremendous promise with his pace and variations, he has already picked up a 5fer in Australia of all places. While Mohammad Amir is slowly getting into rhythm as seen by the recent West Indies tour. These two fast bowlers are the cream of the crop, and can make us fans relive the 90s.
Shadab Khan was undoubtedly the star of the limited overs matches against the West Indies with the ball, although his batting remains untested in this format. The cricketing world saw potential as Shadab delivered rippers after rippers, bamboozling the men in maroon.
Five Pakistani cricketers will go into this tournament known as youngsters, it is up to fate and their own blood and sweat that will decide who comes out with accolades and honour, who will come out and rekindle the passion of Pakistani cricket fans.
