NEW YORK: The French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, targeted in a deadly attack earlier this year by Islamist gunmen, will be honored on Tuesday at a New York gala under heavy security, organizers said.

The award from the PEN American Center comes two days after two gunmen opened fire at a Texas exhibit of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad, depictions that Muslims consider offensive.

Drawings of the founder of Islam were also at the heart of the January attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices that killed 12 people. Al Qaeda's branch in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the weekly had insulted the Prophet Mohammad with its cartoons.

PEN's decision to give the Freedom of Expression Courage Award to Charlie Hebdo prompted six prominent writers to withdraw from the event and more than 100 others to write a letter of protest, said PEN, an organization advocating on behalf of writers persecuted because of their work.

One novelist who withdrew, Rachel Kushner, said she was not comfortable with Charlie Hebdo's "cultural intolerance," PEN said.

Authors Peter Carey, Michael Ondaatje, Francine Prose, Teju Cole, and Taiye Selasi, also withdrew, the New York Times reported.

The attack has raised questions about religious tolerance and censorship in France, which has a 5 million-strong Muslim community.

Police and federal agents planned security for months ahead of the Texas event on Sunday, and the two gunmen were killed after opening fire in a parking lot outside the exhibit.

PEN organizers said security would be "increased" at Tuesday's event.

Gerard Biard, Charlie Hebdo's editor in chief, and Jean-Baptiste Thoret, a staff member who arrived late for work on the day of the attack, are scheduled to accept the award, PEN said.

The French cartoonist Luz, who drew the "Tout Est Pardonne (All Is Forgiven)" cover featuring the prophet after the attacks, said last week he had tired of drawing Mohammad and would stop.

The award will be presented by French-Congolese writer Alain Mabanckou, author of "Memoirs of a Porcupine."

"It is the role of the satirists in any free society to challenge the powerful and the sacred, pushing boundaries in ways that make expression freer and more robust for us all," said PEN executive director Suzanne Nossel in announcing the award. "Charlie Hebdo deserves to be recognized for its dauntlessness in the face of one of the most noxious assaults on expression in recent memory." (Editing by Scott Malone and Lisa Lambert)

Pretty simple to get honored in Western society, just do something insensitive towards Muslims and voila!

So a disgusting, abusive and offensive magazine gets honored. Western world people!

Wow..just wow.

Why are they so obsessed with making fun out of Islam and the Prophet. At the end of the day Muslims are a minority in the West. Isnt unfairly targeting or insulting a minorities beliefs agains what the western world stands for. You wouldnt see them supporting a cartoonist who drew cartoons about Jews or Jewish stereotypes. Or someone who drew MLK as a monkey wouldnt black.people retaliate then.

Wouldnt see them making fun of A Hindu God or Sikh Guru. They wanna just provoke Muslims and hope that one extremist will do something stupid so they can carry on demonising Muslims and justifying the western invasions of the Middle East.

I am not condoning violence and killing people who draw a cartoon. Personally i am not offended by it. But what us the point of drawing the cartoons apart from offending a community. A lot of Muslims already feel victimised by the media portrayal of them whats the point in adding to that.

Well people at Charlie Hebdo drew cartoons offensive to Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc.

When all religions are being made fun of why do Muslims want special status ? Why expect these people to wear kid gloves while dealing with Muslim ?

The reason why cases like Charlie Hebdo, Texas attack keep on happening is becoz of lack of tolerance among the Muslims.

Its this lack of tolerance that is responsible for people being apprehensive towards Muslims.

Jesus is made fun off everywhere in western countries but when it comes to Muslims & other minorities how come people get offended easily ?

The Western countries are not like third world countries where people of every religion are so scared of each other that they hardly get along & prefer to go about their lives separately.

If the minorities really want to live a wholesome life in the Western world they have to stop taking themselves seriously, develop a sense of humour or they can move back to their country of origin becoz the natives there arent going to change their behaviour to suit the minorities.

That's all fine and dandy

What do you feel about the prize which ten other artists have had to withdraw from the event for

Anti Jewish Cartoons are heavily censored in the western media. Jews are protected under racial discrimination laws in the UK. And also you rarely see other religions such as Hinduism and Sikhism Buddhism being insulted and ripped on as much as you see Islam and Muslims being targeted. Now people can say oh we are just mocking Islam not Muslims but all it does is empower right wing islamophobes to spread hatred against Muslims and get away with it under 'freedom of speech'. It just legitmises demonising Muslims as the 'other'. I mean why the hell were British Muslims being asked to apologise for the attacks when it was two rogue individuals. The fact is a lot of Muslims are already feeling victimised due to the war on terror. Now if people wanna criticise Islam that is their right but they should do it in a proper way.

On the contrary, the natives have already had to change their behaviour to suit the minorities, lots of programmes which used to be considered funny by the natives are no longer considered politically correct. When I was a kid there used to be a tv show called It ain't half hot Mum which caricatured Indians as smiling nodding idiots saying stuff like "Von thousand apologies sahib".

Not speaking about UK & Jews but western countries in general. FYI i have seen so many instances of Jews being mocked in the media. Just an example the guy in Big Bang Theory dont remember his name.

Many many such Western serials mock Jews.

I think it is accepted that self deprecating jokes are allowed, so while the show I mentioned above where whites blacked up to portray Indians are no longer considered acceptable. By the same token, Goodness Gracious Me where Indians poke fun at themselves is generally considered okay.

As a Pakistani Non-Muslim living in the West perhaps I can explain this to you.

Muslims will implement some level of Sharia in their life. E.g. You as an individual may be at 20%, your neighbor at 60% and so on.

Pakistan being a relatively liberal country than the Arab ones also has Sharia at Govt Constitution/Law level.

At its core; Sharia is submission. West is Freedom.

What the West should have done is only allowed Muslims to migrate to their countries who want to live their lives free of Sharia.

What's been done is history. So moving forward there are a couple of options; mass deportations or poke the ones that live at a higher Sharia % and believe in death for blasphemers, etc.

If the West would have only allowed the Muslims who want to live without Sharia, the cartoons would be redundant.

Charlie Hebdo fired an 80 year old cartoonist called Maurice Sinet for making fun of jews, specifically sarkozy, he also went on to face criminal charges.

meanwhile this was okay

make of that what you will

The only Islamic thing i do is abstain from eating pork. Im not religious at all but still insulting a minorities beliefs whether it be muslim christian sikh jewish is wrong and uncalled for and just marginalises and demonises that group.

Many Hindus make fun of stupidity of Sikhs like in this caricature for example. Surely there is no harm in it?

Yep same as Citizen Khan thats seen as acceptable because its Pakistanis mocking their own culture. But with the imperialist past of Britain it would offend a lot of people if white actors started dressing up as blackfaces or snake charmers. The british people have already changed to accomodate minorities with anti-discrimination laws and anti-racism laws.

The reality is in the West you can start your own religion today and no one would care. You can worship a stone, just don't stone others with it.

Under Sharia Law you can't, just see how Baha'i community are treated in Iran only because their Prophet came after Islam.

The u.s is different they dont have the mental baggage and scars of the holocaust hanging over them. The likes of France and Britain do not tolerate any forms of anti-Jewish rhetoric in the mainstream.

Freedom of expression is not really universal. Each society has different standards for that. Many lump entire west as one block when it comes to freedom of expression but that's not true. Each country has set their limit of what's acceptable and what's not acceptable to them.

Aus, each European countries, US etc have different limits. Yes, all of them have much more rights than Saudi but that's not really a good benchmark.

In US - you can burn US flag, you can make fun of any religious figure, you can mock Jews, you can deny holocaust and so on... All of them are protected by first amendment. I don't go around doing any of those things but I wouldn't have it any other way to be honest.

Iran and Saudi follow their own versions of Sharia. That suits their political agendas. They use their version of Islam as an ideological tool to demonise the 'other' and instill national unity. The persecution of Bahais is unacceptable but i am not an expert in Sharia.

Death for Apostasy, Blasphemy, Adultery, Homosexuality, then the Gender Apartheid, Forced hijab, subjugation of Infidels, etc. are mainstream under Sharia.

No one in the West would want to have any of the above in their country. I certainly don't.

I have mentioned before and many posters know I am from Karachi and now live in U.S. It may not have been mentioned in our exchanges.

I have mentioned the plight of Non-Muslims in Pakistan, and it's not about me per say. Also, I have left but millions are still living under the apartheid conditions.

Shariah is something that clerics built based on THEIR interpretation of Islam. Tell us exactly how good the clerics are. hardly anyone is good.

Quran itself says:

There is no wordly punishment for Apostasy

There is no wordly punishement for Blasphemy

There cannot be a punishment for Adultery (only the one performed in public) unless there is ONE division of Islam whose moral stands are high and a non-Muslim like YOU would be happy to live in it.

There is no wordly punishment for Homosexuality. The punishment for Sex in Public between homosexuality carries the same limitations as Adultery and the same Punishment. Homosexuality was widely practiced in Middle East after Islam and it is ONLY AFTER British and European rules that the rules changed BY the church of england and THEN adopted by the Middle East Arabs to punish homosexuals for being homosexuals.

There is NO gender apartheid in Quran

There is NO forced hijab in Quran

There is NO subjucations of minorities in Quran

Please stop the islamophobic BS before you post.

For the Islamophobe Yeh Cheez:

Critics/Extremists: Islam tells Muslims to fight non-believers
“And fight them until there is no persecution, and religion is freely professed for Allah. But if they desist, then remember that no hostility is allowed except against the aggressors.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 194
This verse refers to the time of when this verse was revealed when Islam was in its infancy and Muslims were fighting were their lives. The fight them is only a defensive reaction to an aggressive action and it also refers to defending yourself with the pen and not just defend yourself physically. It also clearly states UNTIL there is no persecution whereby the defending should stop and good relations should continue and be established the moment aggression against you stops. This is reiterated again when it says if those attacking you verbally or physically stop attacking you, any Muslim should never become the aggressor. This is proven also if you expand the context using the verse before this.
“And fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight against you, but do not transgress. Surely, Allah loves not the transgressors”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 191
The ultimate goal thus is to attain peace and never be the aggressor. If everyone avoids being transgressions, there would never be war.

Now lets discuss how some critics of Islam purposely manipulate the sequence of the Quranic verses to create the false impression that Islam promotes Murder of non-believers. Take the verse below:
“And kill them wherever you meet them and drive them out from where they have driven you out; for persecution is worse than killing. And fight them not in, and near, the Sacred Mosque until they fight you therein. But if they fight you, then fight them: such is the requital for the disbelievers.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 192
The word Fitnah in this verse does not believe a person's basic disbelief. it refers to persecution in the form of forcing a person to disbelieve by oppressing people or forcing people to change their view about their faith. Quran here mentions that forcing a view against their belief is worse than the aggressor killing the oppressed as it is akin to persecution and torture. This also proves the impression that Quran is against forced change or removal of a belief of a person against his or her will. by singling out this verse the critics of Islam try (and fail) to create the impression that Quran is saying disbelief (single tense) is worse than killing.

Here is the sequence of verses from Surah Al-Baqarah

verse 191 says fight those who fight against you but dont be aggressors. clearly stating a fight should ONLY be defensive

verse 192 continues from 191 and says fight them because their persecution is worse than killing and then it repeats the message of 191 again by saying if they fight you, then fight them.

verse 193 continues and says if they stop fighting you then God is merciful, this is a hint that you should lay your weapons down at that point

verse 194 continues and says:
“And fight them until there is no persecution, and religion is freely professed for Allah. But if they desist, then remember that no hostility is allowed except against the aggressors.”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 194
Notice the Quran says fight them until there is no persecution and religion is FREELY professed for God which is a tie in to the fact that any religion can only be FREELY practiced if there is no persecution against it. and then it repeats the peaceful message again, that if they stop persecuting you or fighting against you, that NO hostility is allowed against anyone except those who are aggressors against your free right to practice your faith.

And then verse 195 continues and says
“The violation of a Sacred Month should be retaliated in the Sacred Month; and for all sacred things there is the law of retaliation. So, whoso transgresses against you, punish him for his transgression to the extent to which he has transgressed against you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.”
— Surah Al Baqarah 195
Clearly stating that if someone tries to persecute you, do not exceed the bounds of the limits of retaliation which means if a person mocks you or ridicules you or takes the Quran away from you, No Muslim has the right to physically assault him as it clearly says, punish him for his transgression TO THE EXTENT to which he has transgressed against you. If someone writes against you, you defend your faith by writing defense of your faith against the aggressors.

Another verse the critics and extremists prove that Islam tells Muslims to fight and kill disbelievers as a blanket statement is the following verse
“They wish that you should disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you may become all alike. Take not, therefore, friends from among them, until they emigrate in the way of Allah. And if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them; and take no friend nor helper from among them”
— Surah Al-Nisa 90
however if you read the very next verse...
“Except those who are connected with a people between whom and you there is a pact, or those who come to you, while their hearts shrink from fighting you or fighting their own people. And if Allah had so pleased, He would have given them power over you, then they would have surely fought you. So, if they keep aloof from you and fight you not, and make you an offer of peace, then remember that Allah has allowed you no way of aggression against them.”
— Surah Al-Nisa 91
Yet another proof is provided that Muslims are not allowed to be aggressive against any party of people who want peace.

Critics: Non Muslims have a lesser status than Muslims according to Quran:
The first verse the critics and extremists often cite is the following which they contend means Islam views brotherhood as Islamic and not Universal
“Surely all believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah, that mercy may be shown on you”
— Surah Al-Hujurat 11
What these critics and extremists will not cite from the Quran is something which comes two verses later which shows Muslims as an Islamic Brotherhood are a part of a Universal brotherhood.
“O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female; and We have made you into tribes and sub-tribes that you may recognize one another. Verily, the most honourable among you, in the sight of Allah, is he who is the most righteous among you. Surely, Allah is All-knowing, All-Aware.”
— Surah Al-Hujurat 14
you can already sense that critics of Islam and extremists try their utmost to pick and chose the verses out of context for their own agenda. It is the purpose of Quran to be used as a whole, rather than picking and choosing certain points.

At this moment of desperation the critics of Islam and extremists will try and show other verses to say Non-Muslims are worthless in the eyes of Allah

such as Are those who know equal to those who know not? (39:10)

What they don't show is the full verse
“Is he who prays devoutly to God in the hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing, and fears the Hereafter and hopes for the mercy of his Lord, like him who does not do so? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who know not?’ Verily, only those endowed with understanding will take heed.”
— Surah Al-Zumar 10
Showcasing the spiritual status of man who worships God and does good deeds and is righteous is higher than someone who on his own account isn't even spiritual on the same level. Take a moment and think about this simple question. Who would be closer to God, one who worships him in accordance to what is suggested to him or one who doesn't believe himself. The equality of man as a person is one thing, the equality in terms of spirituality is a different thing entirely.

Critics/Extremists: Islam says the punishment for Apostasy is death

Let us look at what the Holy Quran says:
“Admonish, therefore, for thou art but an admonisher;
Thou hast no authority to compel them.
But whoever turns away and disbelieves,
Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment (Hell)
Unto Us surely is their return,
Then, surely, it is for Us to call them to account.”
— Surah Al-Ghashiya 22-27
Does this suggest that anyone who disbelieves after believing will go to hell? That is not entirely the case. Here is how this is explained by the Quran:
“Those who believe, then disbelieve, then again believe, then disbelieve, and then increase in disbelief, Allah will never forgive them nor will He guide them to the way.”
— Surah Al-Nisa 138
“Whoso disbelieves in Allah after he has believed — save him who is forced thereto while his heart finds peace in the faith — but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is Allah’s wrath; and they shall have a severe punishment.”
— Surah Al-Nahl 107
The message to Muslims is that the punishment of Apostasy is not be applied by man, but by God himself. Here is what the Quran says in this respect:
“We know best what they say; and thou hast not been appointed to compel them in any way. So admonish, by means of the Qur’an, him who fears My warning.”
— Surah Al-Qaf 46
“And as for those who take for themselves protectors beside Him, Allah watches over them; and thou art not a guardian over them.”
— Surah Al-Shura 7
“But if they turn away, We have not sent thee as a guardian over them. Thy duty is only to convey the Message. And truly when We cause man to taste of mercy from Us, he rejoices therein. But if an evil befalls them because of what their hands have sent forth, then lo! man is ungrateful.”
— Surah Al-Shura 49
“Say, ‘Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger.’ But if you turn away, then upon him is his burden, and upon you is your burden. And if you obey him, you will be rightly guided. And the messenger is not responsible but for the plain delivery of the Message.”
— Surah Al-Nur 55
“And say, ‘It is the truth from your Lord; wherefore let him who will, believe, and let him who will, disbelieve.’ Verily, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose flaming canopy shall enclose them. And if they cry for help, they will be helped with water like molten lead which will burn the faces. How dreadful the drink, and how evil is the Fire as a resting place!”
— Surah Al-Kahf 30
“But if they turn away, then thou art responsible only for the plain delivery of the Message.”
— Surah Al-Nahl 83
These are just the few of the many examples proving that anyone who disbelieves is doing it on their own detriment in the eyes of God but the purpose for Muslims is only to deliver the message of God. One of the biggest and clearest verses of Man only following Islam and God being the punisher (not Man) is in the following verse
“ And whether We make thee see the fulfilment of some of the things with which We threaten them or whether We make thee die, it makes little difference, for on thee lies only the delivery of the Message, and on Us the reckoning.”
— Surah Al-Ra'd 41
At this point the question you ask yourself, If Quran is this clear about how to treat apostates, where is the criticism coming from. The extremists who defy Allah, by choosing to follow suspect hadith over the word of God are the ones who set the example incorrectly. Ask yourself the question looking at it logically, from a Muslim perspective, Quran is the word of God and authentic Ahadith are a collection of words and actions of the Holy Prophet (saw), which takes precedent. The primary source of the incorrect tradition from Ahadith is explained here by Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad Khalifatul Masih IV in his book "Murder in the name of Allah":

http://www.alislam.org/library/books/mna/chapter_7.html

An Authentic ahadith is that which does not contradict the Quran especially considering that Ahadith were compiled 200-300 after the death of the Holy Prophet (saw)

Here is a Powerpoint of how to distinguish between Authentic Ahadeeth and those which might be suspect

Oh pleast stop the BS. Sunni Islam is 99% the exact same as Ahmadi beliefs. the ONLY difference being the status of Jesus coming back and if subordinates are allowed. You are not even a student of the faith and you are attempting to teach a lifelong student of the faith about his faith? please.

According to the MODERN twisted interpretation of SOME clerics who yield power today, the punishment for apostasy is Death. It was NOT the case before Maudoodi, it was not the case before Wahab. Apostasy proven by Quran, in my longer above post PROVES from the QURAN that an Apostaste is NOT punishable , not only that, he should LET be an apostate because the matter is between Man and God. I showed you a dozen verses which say that clearly, where is your verse that Quran says Apostasy means death. You have none. Please educated yourself before making islamophobic uneducated statements.

Such disgusting things need to be banned. Just because Jews, Christians or whatever else don't take their religion seriously, doesn't mean we should do they same.

The West does not live under Sharia blasphemy laws. Their societies are built on challenging ideas.

as expected seeing this thread "ya cheez" will be having a long discussion and loving the small point scoring aganist muslims ...and i open this thread and find him as i expected lol

There is no score board or point scoring. I bring the perspective of a Non-Muslim Pakistani. You are free to debate me on any topic I post about, but whining about it adds no value.

Making race jokes is looked down upon and rightly so because a person cannot choose their race.

Religion on the other hand is an ideology that a person chooses to adopt.

On your last point of Islam growing. It is like saying a soccer team is scoring goals and not conceding any goals, then you look closely and see there is no goal net on the other side.

Meaning; the death punishment for apostasy under Sharia. Even in a comparatively liberal country like Pakistan (compared to Arab countries), a Muslim cannot change his religion even if he wants to.

Ahmadis are not considered Muslim by either Sunni or Shia Ulema. Convince them, not me.

There are Mullahs who may disagree on punishment, but the fact is all four schools of Sunni Islam have death as punishment for apostasy.

Oh Bhai what do you care if Ahmadis are or are not declared Muslims, it is a difference of measured opinion. Just because one group is declared non Muslim the group HAS to abide by that statement ? Ahmadis became even more adherent in their faith after being labelled non Muslim so that proves your point has failed.

Charlie Hebdo is, was and likely will be trolls. They were trolls before the attack and they are trolls after the attack. They said they were attacking ideas. They were attackig the one mutual thing between radicals and moderates which is love of Holy Prophet (saw). No one would have cared if they attacked wahab or maudoodi or maulvi pan but they attacked the entire faith to get back at the few or so they say

A troll can draw cartoons. a criminal can be violent against that troll. It does not make the troll NOT a troll. A troll will remain a troll and a criminal will be a criminal. The most common sense this is to say the person who committed violence was a criminal/terrorist and the troll was pushing the buttons. What does NOT make sense is suddenly after a crime has been committed, the troll is labelled a savior of free speech when in fact because the background facts have not changed still.

someone who draws cartoons targetting a specific part of a group is not a troll especially if that part of the group is the issue. Someone who who draws cartoons targetting the whole group to get back at the specific part of the group IS a troll

I was just saying that your interpretation does not matter since the larger Muslim community leaders do not consider Ahmadis as Muslim. It is not for me to decide who is or isn't one.

My understanding is that Ahmadis and Quranists have a more peaceful interpretation, but since they are a tiny minority of around 2% within the larger Muslim community, their views are not relevant.

More power to the Ahmadis and Quranists though, hope you have more influence in the larger community some day.

You don't bring any perspective since you are vague about what "non-Muslim Pakistani" means here as you are coy to say what your actual background is, whether Christian, Sikh, Buddhist or whatever. But then you are quite specific in attacking Islam both in Pakistan and abroad which seems disingenuous to say the least.

Or someone who drew MLK as a monkey wouldnt black.people retaliate then.

they do. In America all religions are made fun of. Don't agree with it but I do. The amount of humor they have at Jesus' expense is shocking and disgusting but you don't see religious Christians blowing things up as a retaliation to that

We are just more sensitive and that's fine but its also ridiculous to expect people (cartoonists etc.) to take that into account and be scared to do such acts due to fear.

Basically if we didn't react like this and just ignored these, none of this would get this much publicity and once these people see theres no reaction they will just move on eventually. But no, we need to react to everything

In Britain its a different story. Much stricter laws on stuff like this. I absolutely condemb violent acts against cartoonists it is pathetic and unacceptable. And just makes the situation for Muslims worse.

The French satirical paper whose Paris offices were attacked in 2015 is reprinting the caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad that the gunmen who opened fire on its editorial staff cited as their motivation.

The move was announced on Tuesday, a day before 13 men and a woman accused of providing the attackers with weapons and logistics go on trial on charges of terrorism on Wednesday.

In an editorial this week accompanying the caricatures, the paper said the drawings "belong to history, and history cannot be rewritten nor erased".

The January 2015 attacks against Charlie Hebdo and, two days later, a kosher supermarket, touched off a wave of killings claimed by the ISIL (ISIS) armed group across Europe.

Seventeen people died in the attacks - 12 of them at the editorial offices - along with all three attackers.

The attackers, brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, claimed their attack on the newspaper in the name of al-Qaeda. As they left the scene at Charlie Hebdo, they killed a wounded policeman and drove away.

Two days later, a prison acquaintance of theirs stormed a kosher supermarket on the eve of the Jewish Sabbath, claiming allegiance to ISIL. Four hostages were killed during the attack.

The Kouachi brothers had by then holed up in a printing office with another hostage. All three attackers died in near-simultaneous police raids.

The supermarket attacker, Amedy Coulibaly, also killed a young policewoman.

Blasphemy
The caricatures re-published this week were first printed in 2006 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten, setting off sometimes violent protests by Muslims who believe depicting the Prophet is blasphemy.

Charlie Hebdo, infamous for its irreverence, regularly caricatures religious leaders from various faiths and republished them soon afterwards.

The paper's Paris offices were firebombed in 2011 and its editorial leadership placed under police protection, which remains in place to this day.

Laurent Sourisseau, the paper's director and one of the few staff to have survived the attack, named each of the victims in a foreword to this week's edition.

"Rare are those who, five years later, dare oppose the demands that are still so pressing from religions in general, and some in particular," wrote Sourisseau, also known as Riss.

So Charlie Hebdo at it again with their Islamophobia. Did France learned nothing from the past. Even PMIK mentioned Islamophobia on the similar lines in UN last year. COME ON!!!

Should some countries now make satirical cartoons on french culture and people, poking fun at them? How on earth can the Muslim world make the french (and some other countries) understand that this is not right.

Should some countries now make satirical cartoons on french culture and people, poking fun at them? .

That already happens. The French white flag surrender meme is common. And thay french women have hairy bodies tho that’s more than a meme :))

How Muslims should react is this. Ignore it and grow up. If you don’t take the bait then they are unlikely to derive any joy out of it and will eventually stop doing it.

By ignoring it

American animated shows have the habit of making fun of different religions. South Park an american show made a cartoon on the prophet and broadcasted hoping to get a reaction, but they never got that reaction and whole thing was played down.

Yes the usual threats were issued against them by some groups but it died down and south park didnt dare to make another episode like that.

I don't support Charlie Hebdo attack but Charlie Hebdo is a disgusting and classless magazine.

Anyone who works for that magazine should be ashamed of himself/herself.

I agree ignoring may be the best option at this point but there is a big difference between making fun of someone’s culture and mocking religious figures.

I doubt any Muslim would care if they mocked Pakistani or Arab culture.

Well the world doesn’t go as per your wishes. For many ethnicities their ethnicity is more important than religion so they will disagree

MF Hussan drew nude pictures of Hindu gods while potraying his own mother in a sari,he wasnt killed

Please don't make up India to be a bastion of tolerance it isn't. Had he done it in today's BJP governed India, he would have been summarily lynched while police looked on.

Even back then, He was attacked by Shiv Sena. His exhibitions vandalized. He fled India and died in self imposed exile.
In February 2006, He was charged with "hurting sentiments of people" because of his nude portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he did not appear at a hearing, though this warrant was later suspended.

For the record, in my opinion what he did was equally wrong.

If you cannot criticize a religion or philosophy, then there can be no progress. Unless you believe that your religion is already perfect, so any criticism will only make matters worse.

There's a difference between criticism and insult.

There should be a clear line of decency. This line separates humans from other animals.

It is not just about Islam. I am saying in general.

Actually South Park backed down when threatened.

Prior to the broadcast of "201", the radical Muslim organization Revolution Muslim posted a warning on their website that Parker and Stone risked being murdered for their depiction of Muhammad. Comedy Central modified Parker and Stone's version of the episode, obscuring all images and bleeping all references to Muhammad—to the effect of disruptively obscuring the entire two-minute moral conclusion of the story.

The depiction of Buddha snorting cocaine in "200" and "201" prompted the government of Sri Lanka to ban the entire series outright.

You can't be insulted if you don't feel insulted. The person trying to insult you by saying something false looks like a fool if you ignore him.

"Hindus are disturbed over the portrayal of Lord Ganesh as a sex act on NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL) and want apologies from all those responsible for it, including actor Jim Carrey and NBC."

Did I feel insulted by Jim Carrey and SNL? I just thought they were stupid and needed to be ignored.

There cannot be a line drawn between criticism and insult, what seems like criticism to someone can be perceived as an insult by another.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you portray hate of a specific religion...can you openly declare that holocaust was a joke? NO! is that freedom of speech. NO! Is that hate, YES!

Would you like it if I insult and poke fun at your religion, your gods etc.? I am pretty sure the answer is NO.

Poor justification.

Satire and intentional insults are two different concepts. There is plenty of comedians, from Muslims to non-muslims. who made fun of Islam.

What this newspaper is trying to do is an insult.

Exactly, now let me remind you that anti-sematic comments in USA, and majority of the western and even eastern world can get you arrested and jail time. Why can't it be deemed as "Freedom of Speech"? Because it is hurtful. Similarly any such cartoons and burning of Quran type events should be treated in exactly the same fashion by the govts.

Actually anti-Semitic comments won't get you jailed or even arrested in the US, but it could in Europe. In the US there has to be incitement to violence for the authorities to get involved. Anti-Semitic comments may have repercussions like job loss, or loss of business and professional opportunities (for example Marlon Brando, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen etc.) but are not illegal.

99% of Muslims already ignore. Do you think any Muslim on this site is going to do anything because of this cartoon? and because a tiny percentage of Muslims will do something, the rest of the Muslims will be made to feel shamed.

Every country has their own taboos on free speech, and there is nothing wrong with that.

In Europe its Holocaust or anything else that is anti semitic.

In Muslim countries its religion.

And in the US, its race. Your career is over if you say anything racist. Which is a limit on free speech in a way.

All true. "Free speech" in the US can be an illusion unless you are independently wealthy.

Thats quite a ludicrous statement. Criticism has to be backed by substance while insult is just a deliberate attempt to mock others to provoke a reaction.

I agree that at an individual level it should be ignored because individuals reacting would just add to chaos but if only the muslim world wasn't as spineless as it is today, there were a lot of non-violent ways to deal with this. The west doesn't understand how we look at our religious figures. They don't have to. However, the muslim world should be well within their rights to react to such insults appropriately (non-violently) in order to send across a message. Nothing will happen though because there is no will.

Iran as a retaliation did a Holocaust cartoon contest. This same magazine refused to publish any of the cartoons. However all that did was give Muslims more bad press.

What the Muslim countries first needs to do is ensure that in their own countries that the other religions are not insulted. With no exceptions. Then they can make a case to make it a global taboo to insult religions.

I agree with this. Criminal elements must be brought to the book in order to stand on a moral highground. However, I'm not sure such a publication which insults religious figures would get state approval in any muslim country.

Ignoring won't help. Soon, our Prophet (PBUH) will receive similar treatment to Jesus (PBUH) in entertainment industry if Muslims start ignoring.

Peaceful protests and a push for legislation against such acts is the way to go.

Yeh you are right, but South Park didnt get the reaction they were hoping for.

WHat they were trying to pull off was to get people to hate Family guy, as they also had family guy characters drawn up aswell. They wanted the muslims to think that Family guy did it

they did get threats but it was not that widespread. Because when anyone tries make an image of the prophet the news get spread fast. South Park was doing much worse but it never got the attention.

Hence, it died down.

It (anti semetism)can get you jailed and arrested even in NA (who the hell are we kidding). Compare that to Islamophobic comments made by so many, are they arrested or in Jail? NO!

World needs to realize that Islamophobia, just like racism is real. We are dealing with racism in the west and there are numerous protest. This should be combined with the rise of Islamophobia we are seeing. This is definitely not "Freedom of Speech". A law is in place in Canada for Islamophobia, but it has a massive grey area. Atleast that is a start. Such a law should exist everywhere for what is not regarded as Freedom of Speech.
