Former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has died aged 30 after collapsing during training in China, a spokesman for the player has announced.

The Ivory Coast international spent seven years at the Tyneside club, making 138 league appearances.

He joined Chinese second-tier side Beijing Enterprises in February for an undisclosed fee.

He was also part of the Ivory Coast squad that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Awful news. RIP, and my sympathies with the family.

RIP. Strange how many people are collapsing on the pitch nowadays.

Would anyone know why this is happening in football a lot recently? Numerous deaths within the past few years. Overworked physically? Mental issues that led to the pitch? Or pre-sustained injuries? Genetics?

Sorry to hear it. Life is always vulnerable, sleep well.

Horrific news. Really liked him as a player in spite of his famous goal against us in the 4-4 draw. Used to be linked with a move regularly as well. According to reports, he failed a medical with Galatasaray last year because of a heart problem. Someone needs to be held accountable for why he did not retire immediately.

It happens mostly among African players. They come from poor backgrounds with access to poor medical services, and some of them have heart conditions that often go unnoticed and are not monitored at a young age.

He was an adult, only he can be accountable for his decisions. It seems like he was chasing money in China at the expense of his health.

Of course, but I don't feel comfortable blaming a dead man.

And then the question is how did it go unnoticed as he was playing football for Newcastle, but as you said, it didn't - just nothing was done about it, well at Gala anyway.

I think there should be regular health checks for every top flight player to avert situations like this.

Over the past 5 years there's been over 20 on-pitch deaths, albeit mostly lower tier football.

The chinese are responsible too for trying to milk a man with serious health problems.

He was on Newcastle's books up until January this year, no mention of any medical issues. You would think one of the world's biggest clubs would have raised any issues for insurance purposes if there was something wrong at the time. In the end though, no one can take responsibility for his health ahead of himself, and Mamoon is right, it isn't the time to talk ill of the deceased. It's a massive loss to the game and his friends and family.

A lot of heart conditions often go completely unnoticed. My cousin in the Isle of Man had an ASD (hole in the heart), and he lived a completely normal life till the age of 15, when he started playing football and would be out of breath very quickly, and his father is a doctor. A lot of these footballers live completely normal lives until the they simply collapse one day and die.

Some of them get lucky, for example Real Madrid's Ruben de la Red fainted on the pitch but was taken to the hospital in time, and had to promptly retire. FIFA and UEFA need to be more vigilant because considering the number of players who have died due to heart problems, it seems that the regular medicals at clubs and the other health checkups are failing to detect these issues.

It might have to do with conditions and weather as well. Many players from Africa and South America don't feel well playing in England

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

What a goal this was from him.
