Child killed in Lalamusa by cars in Nawaz Sharif's motorcade

Speeding cars accompanying Nawaz Sharif's 'homecoming' motorcade crushed a nine-year-old child to death in Lalamusa on Friday, DawnNews reported.

According to DawnNews, the child was among a crowd of supporters gathered to greet Nawaz Sharif as his motorcade passed through Lalamusa.

It seems that he strayed onto the road and was hit by one of the cars belonging to the Elite Force before multiple following cars ran over him without stopping.

According to eyewitnesses, the child succumbed to his injuries while the vehicles passed over him. While a mobile health unit was accompanying the deposed prime minister's motorcade, bystanders said no car stopped to take stock of the child's condition.

The child's father lost consciousness, experiencing heart palpitations, after he saw his child's mangled body on the road, DawnNews said.

Locals said that the father was shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors fought to save his life.

As news of the boy's death made national headlines, Nawaz Sharif's daughter, Maryam Nawaz, took to Twitter to express grief over the incident and said that the local PML-N leadership had been asked to provide assistance to the grieved family.

Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb also regretted the incident in a statement. Similarly, PML-N leader Musaddiq Malik expressed sorrow over the child's death and sent his condolences to the family.

Responses from others were not as sympathetic. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah shifted blame, saying the child had been hit by "some other vehicle which was speeding to join Nawaz Sharif's motorcade."

Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, while expressing sympathies for Ahmad’s family, added that the child was the "first martyr of this struggle, which is aimed at bringing the supremacy of law and justice to everyone in the country.”

Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law echoed similar sentiments, terming the child's loss "a sacrifice for Pakistan" while noting that "millions of others had also sacrificed their lives during Pakistan's creation."

Vehicles in Sharif`s procession run over boy, retired soldier

A 50-year-old man and a child were killed after being run over by vehicles in former prime minister Nawaz Sharif`s cavalcade on their way to Gujranwala on Friday.

Khalid Hussain, an elderly retired army soldier, was crossing the GT Road near Chak Peerana after offering Friday prayers when a vehicle in the Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz`s convoy hit him.

Some people spotted him lying on the median with a head wound. He was buried in a graveyard in Chak Peerana in the evening The death of a 12-yearold boy, run over by vehicles escorting Mr Sharif out of Lala Musa city, prompted a two-hour-long protest by the area residents who demanded stern action against those responsible for the death.

The tragic incident occurred as Mr Sharif`s procession left Lala Musa city. Hamid had been waiting along the GT Road, with his father Rehmat and an uncle, to welcome the procession.

According to eyewitnesses, soon after Mr Sharif`s vehicle left the reception site, a jeep car-rying mobile-jamming equipment knocked down the boy close to the median. As the child fell, two vehicles of the Elite Force, part of the ex-premier`s security detail, ran over the child without stopping to check.

Despite a large number of Rescue-1122 ambulances in the cavalcade, none of the vehicles stopped for the child.

Finally, a young man hoisted the boy onto his motorcycle rickshaw and took him to a nearby private hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The boy`s father fainted.

The deceased`s relatives and scores of other people bloclced the GT Road in protest.

They were joined by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Madad Ali Shah of Kulewal Syedan and Jamaat-i-Islami`s Gujrat emir Tariq Saleem, who had joined the demonstration to express solidarity with thebereaved family.

A short while later, PMLN`s MPA Mian Tariq Mehmood of Dinga spoke to the child`s paternal uncle and assured him that justice would be done. The police then registered a case against an unidentified driver of an unidentified vehicle on the uncle`s complaint.

Gujrat Headquarters SP Maaz Zafar told Dawn that the protest was called off after the registration of the case.

The police would investigate the incident and ensure justice to the bereaved fam11y, he added.

Addressing a public gathering in Gujrat, federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique termed the child `the first martyr in the struggle to strengthen democracy in Pakistan` He expressed sorrow over the death and said that PML-N workers had been asked to visit the grieving family.

While addressing a big rally in Gujranwala later in the evening, Mr Sharif announced that he would visit the boy`s family and offer his condolences.

Social media reaction Twitter was abuzz with several hashtags protesting against the death of the 12-year-old. Shortly after the incident, Mr Sharif`s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif tweeted: `Heart bleeds for the little PMLN supporter who lost his life today. May Allah grant sabar to the family.

‘Hard questions apprehended’: Sharifs ‘advised against’ visiting house of boy killed in rally

GUJRAT: Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to arrive at Lalamusa on Aug 19 and will visit the residence of a boy, Hamid Chughtai, who died last Friday after being hit by a protocol vehicle in the ex-premier’s cavalcade during his journey from Islamabad to Lahore.

According to sources, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif may also accompany his brother on the occasion.

However, the sources said, the local administration and police had suggested postponement of the visit till arrest of the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident that caused embarrassment to the PML-N leadership.

A source told Dawn that the local police and administration had made repeated requests to the staff of Nawaz Sharif for custody of the driver and the vehicle (SS 875) for investigation into the case.

But, the source said, the staff of Mr Sharif had so far been showing reluctance to surrender the driver as well as the vehicle despite intervention by the Punjab government in favor of police demand.

The sources said the chief minister had also conveyed a message to the ex-premier’s staff asking them to surrender the driver and the vehicle but to no avail so far.

A police party led by a senior official of Gujrat police had also visited a senior security officer of Nawaz Sharif on Saturday the last seeking arrest of the driver but returned empty handed.

The Section 320 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), under which the case was registered, declares the offence bailable and even the station house officer of the concerned police can release the suspect on personal surety.

An official, wondering why delaying tactics are being used in surrendering the suspect and the vehicle responsible for the death of the nine year old to police, asked what would be Mr Sharif’s response if the boy’s parents inquired about any legal action taken against the driver during his visit to Hamid’s house.

“That is why it had been conveyed to the concerned quarters that the visit should be delay at least till the suspect’s custody issue was resolved,” he added.

A PML-N MPA, Mian Tariq, of Dinga, however, dispelled the chances of any questions being raised by the deceased boy’s parents during the visit, putting the Sharifs in an awkward situation.

He said the Sharifs were coming to Lalamusa on a scheduled visit and they had already announced they would also visit the deceased boy’s house where they would express their sympathy for the family.

The MPA said that he, along with Punjab local bodies minister Mansha Ullah Butt, had met with the parents of Hamid a few days ago and handed them over a Rs2 million cheque on behalf of Punjab chief minister for their financial assistance. The family had accepted the cheque, he added.

“I don’t have the power to seek justice,” a visibly tired man, father of 12-year old Hamid told media on Saturday.

Hamid Chugtai, resident of Lala Musa was killed when a car in the convoy hit him and ran over him despite all the efforts of passersby.

Visited by relatives and friends daily, the old man was of the view that powerful people like PAT chief Tahirul Qadri and PTI chief Imran Khan are doing what they could do against Nawaz but “I don’t have the power”.

Answering a question about blood money, he said that he has separated himself from this and two of his brothers are looking into the matter.

Hamid lost his life on August 11 during former PM’s “homecoming” rally in Gujrat.

Eye witnesses had said that the 12 year old Hamid was hit by a vehicle in Nawaz Sharif’s GT Road rally caravan but none of the vehicles in the former PM’s protocol stopped despite onlookers’ cries.

The father of the boy fainted after hearing the news of his son’s accident.

It is pertinent to note here that Nawaz Sharif’s cavalcade had an ambulance and a first aid kit too but none of the cars in the caravan stopped to even look at the boy.

During his speech in Gujranwala on that very day, Nawaz Sharif, however, said that he will personally visit the boy’s house and will help the bereaved family.

So far, Nawaz Sharif hasn’t paid a visit to Hamid’s family.
